brainwasher and i both mentioned the mixtape on rolling r&b in like january you funky-addled clod!!

'to hell with it' is a good song (most likely better on paper than 'everybody rock') but part of me is hesitant to greenlight her boldest yet recorded foray into darkest jazmine sullivania - i've always loved her easy, big sisterly relationship with modernity you see. also she loves rolling r&b and is honoured every time she's mentioned there.

The problem with rolling threads is that I feel like I have to watch every embedded youtube and not participate otherwise - and then there's never time to do so.

This problem doesn't arise when you're on the Executive Board (e.g. funky house sceptics) but as a simple non-executive member it often feels easier just to skip the meetings so no-one realises you've been shirking your duties.

LOL "Sullivania". I like her soulful stuff as well but I do occasionally get the impression sometimes with that kinda mixtape cut that she kinda just sleepwalked through the songwriting process (singing always spot on obv) because she finds that kind of thing so easy now. On one level this is compelling because it's like Essence Of Teedra, but on another level it ends up standing in the shadow of her first album (having a hard-to-top debut not necessarily being a "problem" of course).

While I'd be concerned if she decided just abandon that and do all electrosheen all the time ("Everybody Rock", "So Kool" etc.) I get the sense that she thinks through her woodland forays a little bit more than her open house tours.

Um...I somehow never heard this until very recently? And it might be a more perfect rainy-day-album than Mariah's latest one. Definitely amazing.

posted from the SR thread - i thought it would be better to post it here rather than derail that one even more:

"Titchy saying that Teedra's only good song is "Be Your Girl" is one of the wrongest things you've said!! It's not even top 5 on her album!"

are you serious? lol. i suppose ill have to dig it out again just to check but i dont remember anything better on there. though the b-more club mix of BYG is even better than the original and thats the one i listen to most.

yeah im not seeing how any of those are better. theyre all very samey, not really that well defined as songs, and not really that special enough groove-wise or melodically to compensate. teedras got a lovely voice and could be a great singer but be your girl is her only great song. the rest is pretty ho-hum filler. most of that first album still sounds like b-list 90s R&B. the type of thing id have expected from tara thomas, kim swain or someone, though both of those artists' better known songs are still better than the top 5 listed above.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 11:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Some days "Complex Simplicity" is my favourite song EVER.

U mad titchy.

Tim F, Wednesday, 6 January 2010 11:40 (fourteen years ago) link

dude.

that song isnt even on the level of mona lisa. (eg wanna please u). the reasons i liked teedra is cos she reminded me of all the 90s female R&B i liked. but apart from be your girl, its all signifiers (warmth, no euro-ish synths, rhode-ish keyboards, more of a 'soul' rather than pop voice, etc etc) and no songs.

Titchy just be quiet you're ridiculously wrong on this point, "Complex Simplicity" is one of the finest pieces of songwriting and one of the finest performances I can think of. Genuinely moving.

Everybody worried 'bout the negative
Lookin' at the worst of things
I'm just try'na celebrate my life
Mama said be young when you can be young
Life only gets rougher
I'm just try'na keep my youthful eye
I won't be held down
With all the things that happened in the past
Daddy he wasn't there
Mama she's goin' out
I gotta be grown...
I need you to hold me down!

Tim F, Wednesday, 6 January 2010 12:16 (fourteen years ago) link

tim, you heard her tracks from this year right? her mixtape was nice bit the two really crucial tracks were "so kool" and "put it in the wind" - plus "to hell with it" and "everybody rock" which leaked later in the year.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 12:19 (fourteen years ago) link

I've listened to them on youtube but the only one I actually have is "So Kool" (which is brilliant). It's hard to place teedra tracks quality wise on one or two listens but they all sounded pretty great.

Tim F, Wednesday, 6 January 2010 12:23 (fourteen years ago) link

one month passes...

there's some inevitably good bits on royal patience (the new mixtape) but altogether it's maybe the first time i've felt i was supporting a sentimental pet cause (though still a deserving one) rather than honouring the righteous fire of a colossal artistic injustice etc.

like i'm not sure if it's just some sort of general frustration or if i'm onto something but for instance 'g-tight', the 2002 poli paul offcut on here, seems to stick out by a fair margin in terms of its all-in-one elegantly assured ladygangsta, even though all its elements are notionally present in the other tracks.

r|t|c, Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:14 (fourteen years ago) link

hmm that's not the one that stood out to me - so far i'm about "oh love", "kisses never taste so sweet" and "international playboi" - but it's definitely...not the kind of thing with which i'd feel able to convince anyone not already on board. but then, the same was true for the last mixtape apart from the still-towering "so kool" and "put it in the wind". have to wonder where teedra is going these days though.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:30 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah obviously i think i'm just latching onto the closest thing to complex simplicity with its fully-formed implicit context. i do like all those other songs but like you say i've rather lost the thread of how they're supposed to hang together now.

r|t|c, Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i assume she's not signed atm? i really want another album from her - i think she'd think more about how the songs should hang together in that situation, rather than dumping a zip of badly-tagged songs at wildly varying bitrates on the world.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:39 (fourteen years ago) link

omg i know right? first thing i wanted to do was post here about banishing a bitch for bad mp3/m4a grabbag tagging but then i thought about how she's prolly just sat at home in front of an old imac listening to kings of leon and i thought better of it. plus i'm sure she knew i secretly enjoy correcting that shit anyway.

no, still not signed as far as i know. probably end up on hyperdub at this rate.

r|t|c, Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:50 (fourteen years ago) link

kinda weird how she never even did any more outside writing after 'dip it low', you'd think that wouldve kept her name in the industry at least and been a nice little earner to boot.

r|t|c, Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:53 (fourteen years ago) link

a teedra and cooly g supergroup.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:54 (fourteen years ago) link

they could call it 'simple complexity'.

r|t|c, Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:57 (fourteen years ago) link

you know that would actually be really great. funky remixes have been keeping teedra's name alive for a while now anyway.

i think she's done the ~focusing on being a mother~ thing?

as much as badu likes to call herself an analogue girl in a digital world, i get the distinct impression that it's teedra who's constantly asking her desktop "what does this do?", i suspect she may not even know what a bitrate is.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:58 (fourteen years ago) link

gotta love it really tbh. i know i'm risking death 4 this btw but does anyone else actually kinda see the cosmic rightness of teedra liking kol? it has improved my tolerance for 'sex on fire' immeasurably if nothing else.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 25 February 2010 16:07 (fourteen years ago) link

have to say, teedra's KOL repping sits easier than solange's ongoing adventures with GAPDY, which made me unfollow her a while ago

Yeah this makes a lot of sense to me. I think people hate the big KOL singles out of a sense that they're something that should be hated, that they allow the public to indulge in retrograde taste etc but really I can so imagine Teedra vibing on the way their tunes hang together.

Anybody seen her unplugged?

curmudgeon, Monday, 7 March 2011 01:16 (thirteen years ago) link

And I wonder if anything has changed with her label situation since that interview linked to above? Does not appear to be the case.

curmudgeon, Monday, 7 March 2011 15:10 (thirteen years ago) link

"r u 4 real" was released as an official single on itunes the other week - on the black moses music label, which i'm guessing is her own?

I might be doing a quick e-mail interview with her to run the day of her show in Washington DC. Trying to set that up. Can't make the gig this time.
