walking as much as I do everyday, uncomfortable shoes (which means tall, dark or closed ones in 80+ weather) is simply not an option.

but that means you can wear peep-toes all the time!

leather against bare feet in summer = sweaty and gross.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 16:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Uh...does that mean you only wear cloth shoes in the summer? Because leather actually does absorb moisture and it breathes, unlike plastic or rubber. And good leather sandals are always an option! Plus they break in so nicely when you're good and sweaty.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 17:21 (seventeen years ago) link

I do sometimes wear leather sandals, I thought of that after I posted. But I'd say mostly it's sneakers (with cotton socks when leather). I should just give up and accept my mid-thirties non-fashionable self. I used to actually give a shit about appearance but now I'm just vans and jeans.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 17:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Vans are fashionable, I think -- I mean, lots of people around here prob consider them "standard" sneakers but let's face it: in most of the country, "standard" sneakers are not a nice sleek pair of canvas slip-ons that can be ordered in a Jolly Roger/cherry blossom print.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 17:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Completely changing the tone for a moment, are these nice? I think they are but when I try and think rationally I'm not sure I can justify them:

(They also come with some microchip thingy in the sole that syncs with your ipod and acts as some kind of running computer wtf)

=== temporary username === (Mark C), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 17:32 (seventeen years ago) link

that ipod bit is just weird.

xpost - yeah I wouldn't wear reeboks with tube socks anywhere. I like funky kicks. But if there were vans with hello kittys on them, I'd totally wear them. This proves to my boyfriend, for example, that I have no taste.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 17:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I would be shocked, SHOCKED, if there weren't Hello Kitty Vans available somewhere. And if my sister didn't have them. Her tastes are a lot more "cute" than mine, though.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 17:43 (seventeen years ago) link

rejoice! the $225 boots i've been wanting for a while now are on sale!
despair! they're only marked down to $168.
sigh.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 21:43 (seventeen years ago) link

xps - You have to buy the iPod thing separate.

What are the boots, Lauren?

I had a dream that I bought standard black converse, exactly like the one's I have now, because I was trapped in a castle without shoes, and there was a nearby shop with signs in French that sold shoes.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:43 (seventeen years ago) link

a pair of frye ankle boots that don't look anything like frye boots. i'm sure i'd get really good wear out of them, but i just can't spend that much on one pair (plus i'm greedy and want them in several colors).

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I lust after Frye's.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:04 (seventeen years ago) link

it's worth the money though, if you really like them - they're so sturdy you'll wear them for 20 years - $200 for that vs. buying 10 pairs of cheap boots that wear out at $50/pair

dar1a g (daria g), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:12 (seventeen years ago) link

i have the nike shoes with the pedometer chip thing. its great if you like running!

t0dd swiss (immobilisme), Monday, 15 January 2007 21:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Frye has really branched out! They have lots to like in the "fashion" line, never mind the perfectly awesome harness & cycle boots per their usual.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 15 January 2007 21:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Those black heels are really, really adorable, pp! I love everything about them!

Do people still use the term "pumps"? I don't know why that just popped into my head.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Monday, 15 January 2007 23:27 (seventeen years ago) link

looking at the frye site is like torture, srsly. i want half the boots/shoes on it!

(and your new shoes are cute, trza!)

Ladies, sorry to be checking out your thread here, but I want to check something.

This IS massively dud and nobody in their right mind would be really wearing boots like these, right? Right?

those are awesome

Those are damn silly. But sometimes silliness is what's called for.

Can you remove the toe part? That's in right now, apparently.

despite my piss-taking friends delighting in telling me i look like i should be wearing calipers, and "they're school shoes", i'm pleased with my recent purchase:

I could really do with some casual shoes right now, any suggestions?

Ed (dali), Sunday, 4 February 2007 19:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Charlie, those are awesome. As for the denim cut-outs, I'm sure I've seen some of The Pussycat Dolls wear something very similar. Uck.

would it be strange to say the boot model has attractive knees?

milo z (mlp), Sunday, 4 February 2007 22:28 (seventeen years ago) link

stan: those are an abomination.

milo: nay, unless you're ready to move into an assisted living community and wear your slacks belted midway up your torso.

those simples look like they're made of yoghurt and muesli knitted together....

I am buying these quite soon:

I haven't bought these yet, but I have designed them on Nike ID, and I want your opinion. What do you reckon of the design? What would you tweak?

Mark C, Friday, 23 February 2007 14:59 (seventeen years ago) link

ARgh, mine eyes, no. those colours just don't go together. Then again, I am slightly colourblind so pay no attention.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Bought some new Campers recently (on credit card) simply because I was sick of having to check the weather forecast before I could decide which of my battered shoes to wear (old Campers = let in water, old Camperesque Clarks = don't, but were getting disgusting). Also bought some black Dunlop pumps from Office - they were cheap.

Now, why is it that new shoes hurt the second time you were them, but not the first?

Michael Jones, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I love green and I love deep red (which it is, not pink as Sgs rather cheekily described it) - I am not 100% sure thy go together but I think this looks pretty nice.

Mark C, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Mike, that happened with the pointy woody ones I posted on the pointy shoes thread. I hope they don't hurt the 3rd time too.

If anyone else wants to play with Nike ID, it's fun! Just go here.

Mark C, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:12 (seventeen years ago) link

I love how boys have taken over this thread.

Mark, I'm sure the colors aren't 100% true do to being online and stuff, but maybe that would look better with a deeper, more brick red? It looks almost magenta on my monitor. (again, not true colors.)

Ms Misery, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I agree it doesn't look quite as I'd want it to, but if I remember rightly it's the darkest red they have.

Mark C, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:16 (seventeen years ago) link

bah, I couldn't find the customize part? Do you have to register? Vans.com has one too which has entertained me many times during lunch.

My little brother has a new business customizing shoes. He paints them and puts any kind of design on them that customers want. pretty awesome. Most of what he's done is pretty, well, loud, but they're made to order and he's gotten a huge response from the hip-hop scene and extreme-sports type dudes. He's been invited down to a fashion show in Houston next month. I'm proud of him.

here they are (unfortunately on a garish myspace page but I'm working on a real site):

Ms Misery, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:19 (seventeen years ago) link

It's the only red they have for that part of the shoe :(

Mark C, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:20 (seventeen years ago) link

You don't have to register - hover over "footwear" (to the right of where it says "Nike ID"), then choose a type, then that takes you to the customisation process.

Mark C, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:22 (seventeen years ago) link

i'll have to check out your brother's thing, sam. customized stuff makes the best gifts.

lauren, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay, had another go, dumped the red. Thoughts?

I'm very into Keens these days.

I have these

and these, which are waterproof for when dog walking.

accentmonkey, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:48 (seventeen years ago) link

those look nice Mark, kind of camoflauge colors. I think the point of custominzing though is that you should get what *you* want, even if it makes others shreik in terror. ;)

yeah check them out lauren. he said he could do some vans for me but I still thinking of the most perfect design.

Ms Misery, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:49 (seventeen years ago) link

i do NOT need the temptation of customized vans!

lauren, Friday, 23 February 2007 16:05 (seventeen years ago) link

mark c has GREBT taste in sneakers! i LOVE those green and red ones!

nathalie, Friday, 23 February 2007 16:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I have had a rethink - I kind of prefer them with the top-of-toe area coloured and the band in front of the toes white (i.e. the opposite of above), so I'll work on a redesign. The ones above look a lot like the New Balance I have which are quite nice but have always slightly disappointed me.

Thanks Nath :)
