John, that is very cool.

tehresa, sorry you are bored. I am having a TON of fun reading about the GI system. I had to say, "no, you guys can't come over today and have your kids play with our kids" to our closest friends, and I am feeling crappy about that, but I'm buried in a shit ton of homework and I need to have the house quiet (and not to have people over). I have been in this program for what seems like forever, but somehow my closest friends still don't seem to quite "get it" when I can't hang out with them every single weekend. GRRRRRR.

if it makes you feel better, we had breakfast at the local bakery and ate freshly baked pastries.

I really want to hate you, but apparently I'm incapable of anything but dull envy right now. UGH

Sara R-C, Sunday, 12 October 2008 22:52 (fifteen years ago) link

When you get a chance I'd like to hear about the pastries, though.

and speaking of delish sunday food: we took bagels with us, i had an asiago bagel from noah's, so fantastic! as are their mudslide cookies. then i came and felt like i musta burned a trillion calories on that hike today so it was ok to eat the caramel-choc-pecan clusters i bought from trader joes yesterday...

Mmmmmm, Kyle McLachlan in Twin Peaks = so fantastic. How does he look in person now, though? Every time I see him on tv I think, "hmmm, he hasn't aged well."

RR Your FOOD sounds so yum. And your First Snake Ever? Really?! (Don't they have snakes in NZ?!)

suzy, yes, Firefox is the browser that I typically use for ILX stuff. Should I try it in Safari (assuming it doesn't crash my entire computer)?

Sara R-C, Monday, 13 October 2008 01:21 (fifteen years ago) link

on the plane?!?!? is he like, twin peaks awesome or desperate housewives ehhh? SO JEALOUS!!!!

I really want to hate you, but apparently I'm incapable of anything but dull envy right now. UGH

i know. i want to hate people fore their happiness but i just can't!!! argh. i mean, certain people i can hate, but not good people.

i finally got some socialization: sat outside @ local for 2 pints of amazing bloody marys plus a knob creek to top things off, with a nice, casual chat among friends. it was very peaceful.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 13 October 2008 01:24 (fifteen years ago) link

certainly they have snakes in nz! though i wish you were from AUS right now so i could say 'if there are no snakes, picnic at hanging rock is a LIE!!!!!' and be all indignant.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 13 October 2008 01:26 (fifteen years ago) link

I have never seen Picnic at Hanging Rock, but I have heard of it. Now I really want to see some Snakes on a Plane-type scenes in it, though, and I suppose I'll be sorely disappointed.

I just don't have the energy to hate anybody these days. C'est tragique!

oh btw i picked up sushi for dinner on my way home. NOM.

there are no snakes in nz, or poisonous anything except for katipo spiders which are not very lethal, or scary, or common, i've never seen one outside of a museum. there are no native mammals either, only birds and reptiles.

estela, Monday, 13 October 2008 01:41 (fifteen years ago) link

TZA I watched picnic at hanging rock just last week!! Miranda wasn't THAT hot

Bright Future (sunny successor), Monday, 13 October 2008 02:04 (fifteen years ago) link

estela is right. we have no bears, no dangerous cats, nothing like that. the most dangerous thing you can encounter in the wild is a farm-hick or a wild boar.

I have a technical question for Dan/John/other lurking mod types. When I load a long thread - for example, the current gen. election thread - I get huge gray boxes obliterating lots of the text. It doesn't seem to happen on shorter threads. What the hell is that about? I can't stay at my house constantly to read everything and in some cases I hate missing stuff.

I have no idea; other people have complained about it as well. I'm guessing someone posted videos that can't be embedded or something similar.

I have a mtg at 10 I'm dreading. There's a "colleague" here who has taken a dislike to me and everything we try to work on together turns into a clusterf*ck. Although she's higher up on the food chain than me I don't report to her (or fall under her at all) yet she's always pulling a rank card. annoying. I know it's because one, she's very young, two, just started in her position a week before mine, and three not very confident of herself in her position. I try to tell myself that hostility is a weakness and I shouldn't rise to hers. But still. . .I prefer work to be of the non-stomachache inducing variety.

Fightin' lions with a switch (Susan), Monday, 13 October 2008 14:13 (fifteen years ago) link

ugh that sounds really obnoxious :( sorry you have to deal with her.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 13 October 2008 14:17 (fifteen years ago) link

just compliment her a couple of times and she'll like you fine xp

Bright Future (sunny successor), Monday, 13 October 2008 14:18 (fifteen years ago) link

I thought of trying to ask her to lunch and be friendly, etc. Then I thought, no, I don't really want to be her friend. She's six or seven years younger than me, a sorority-type chick, and a little self-important now that she has an office with a window.

Fightin' lions with a switch (Susan), Monday, 13 October 2008 14:38 (fifteen years ago) link

oh god not lunch. just tell her her skirt is cute or something

Bright Future (sunny successor), Monday, 13 October 2008 14:39 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah sunny's totally otm here. there's an uppity little 22yr old who does all the rosters at my job. she used to be fulltime, hence she thinks she's still a 'manager' but is now back in school. she's doing gender studies, and is the most stereotypical of those type of students: her favourite word is 'communication' and she spent last year 'finding herself' blah blah. anyway, she's a total dick and patronising and a bunch of other annoying stuff. but i was listening to portishead when she came in the other day, and she got all excited because 'you know, i just think that portishead totally crosses all musical boundaries, and really reaches out to anyone who truly loves music'. so i gritted my teeth and put a little effort into bonding with her, since i need her to okay me taking 6 days off over thanksgiving weekend to go back to chicago.

Sarah Palin isn't dumb, she's post-modern (Rubyredd), Monday, 13 October 2008 15:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Portishead is probably the best way to solve every problem. However, WOW you guys have annoying co-workers. I want to slap them and all I've done is imagine them a bit based on your descriptions!

xp Dan - thx for confirming that I'm not imagining the boxes at least. ;) As for the acid reflux, ugh. I hope that isn't common for you, because that would suck. I'm totally resisting giving you the helpful advice from my textbook that seems to apply to every upper GI complaint.

Sara R-C, Monday, 13 October 2008 15:57 (fifteen years ago) link

i am in some serious fucking pain from that hike yesterday.

i need her to okay me taking 6 days off

okay this would drive me up the wall. I have to be careful though b/c I can be really aggressive and bitchy if pushed. I have to keep reminding myself that this one's not worth it. Especially since my guy could likely lose his job soon.

Sore muscles are good. Gettin' some work in!

Fightin' lions with a switch (Susan), Monday, 13 October 2008 19:44 (fifteen years ago) link

sara, your skills would have been useful for me last night when i was trying to help out the kid at the show with GAPING HEAD WOUND from the pit. i am not sure that you would have enjoyed belphegor or ensiferum all that much, although they were in fact AWESOME. Amon Amarth was kind of meh, and The Abcense was ok.

I don't know, but I think it is a tragedy that the only thing that I understand from John's post is the phrase "GAPING HEAD WOUND."
