the GTA games were vastly different from each other, in comparison the Gran Turismo series all looked the flippin same.

but equally the championship manager games on the amiga were totally different beasts from the one Dom and Louis are OCD about today. pro evolution soccer series (this is called Winning Eleven in the US right? lol) similarly changed a lot from the original incarnations of it.

monkey island one and two otoh, as with a number of other games in that list, were very much cut from the same cloth ----> vote splitting. as a series they would have presumably cracked the top 5. Governor Elaine marley the first fictioinal character i had a crush on.

Just like to point out that last night on Football Manager 2008, I got Northampton Town promoted to the Premiership. In the 2016/2017 season. On the playoffs. After we'd been out of the play-offs all season up to the last three games. And losing the first leg 5-3 (won the second leg 2-0 and got through on penalties). And won the final 1-0 after West Brom had their catain sent off in the third minute.

Our ground capacity is 13,500. We are going to get royally SHAGGED this season.

The game I am playing right now I got Ipswich up to the Prem in 2009-2010, and I think I am going to finish in 17th place! Woooooooo! They're one of the easier Champ teams, but all champ teams are difficult in the Prem...

This thread seems to have faded away altogether too rapidly considering how much build-up and anticipation there was. presumably there's some kind of sexxy analogy that I can't be bothered to come up with but feel free to insert (lol) yr own.

I have nothing particularly worthwhile to say other than SIMCITY WTF? Which has been said many mnay times.

INDIE BAND (Lamp), Thursday, 27 October 2011 03:10 (twelve years ago) link

i support this proposition for a decade specific poll

regarding the poll - STILLLLLLL, i'm not seeing why mario is warranted enough to gain multiple positions. the platformers were all very, very much the same game... innovative, possibly, in context of themselves but never in the wider spectrum of things. also i suspect iconoclasm for not including shadow of the colossus - as it is a really, truly great game.

Tru-nerds are the ones who play RPGs, fwiw. People who like Ico and Nethack go biking and on dates from time to time

j-rpg's, definitely. but fact that skyrim has it's own pre-launch parties and has been advertised off the fucking ying yang (television ads??) makes me thing rpg's have broken into that lower tier of nerdom.

or maybe its just bethesda games. i was thinking fallout 3 as another case-study til i realized these are all games developed by the same dudes.

one year passes...

I'm looking for video game recommendations, and I guess this is as good a thread as any to ask for them...

I recently played through Kingdoms of Amalur, and I'm now playing Skyrim, and while I'm enjoying it a lot, one thing's kinda bugging me... In both of these games there's a "speech" skill, and even though it can occasionally be used to persuade or intimidate someone to do what I want, in 95% of the quests you just have to kill someone, using your speech skill with them is not even an option. I kinda miss Jade Empire, where a lot of quests (though obviously not all of them) could actually be solved either by persuading/intimidating someone, or by killing them. So, I was wondering if you could recommend me some good RPGs (preferably fantasy ones) where speech would actually matter?

Tuomas, Monday, 27 May 2013 11:37 (ten years ago) link

Planescape: Torment, Arcanum, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines (at least for the first 3/4ths of the game), and Fallout 1, 2, and New Vegas all have interesting quest solutions for characters with strong speech skills.

one way street, Monday, 27 May 2013 12:27 (ten years ago) link

Think we might almost be getting close to it being okay to re-do this. Maybe in another year or two. Dom's ''each person gets one nom per decade'' really squeezed out some faves to the point where we had to have a secondary poll of flagrantly overlooked games (e.g. SFII). On the other hand, plenty of beloved cult-favorite stuff DID get nommed but still got no votes so maybe it was fine...

Doctor Casino, Monday, 27 May 2013 23:57 (ten years ago) link

dom haunts us from beyond the grave

turds (Hungry4Ass), Tuesday, 28 May 2013 00:04 (ten years ago) link

That list needs more Castlevania and Mega Man games.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 28 May 2013 05:23 (ten years ago) link

Thanks for the recommendations, One Way Street! I've previously read positive comments on Planescape: Torment and Arcanum, but I'm not sure if I can handle the isometric (is that the correct word?) graphics and old-school RPG gameplay... Maybe I'll try them one day, though. As for Vampire the Masquerade, I'm kinda averse to vampire stuff in general, and the VtM franchise in particular, so I'm not sure I want to play that one.

So yeah, I'd still love to hear recommendations on newer (i.e. ones with 3D graphics) fantasy RPGs where fighting is not the only option.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 08:29 (ten years ago) link

Action adventure game (a la Zelda or Psychonauts) recommendations are welcome too.

I'd endorse that, it's been a reasonably long time and it might be interesting to see how things roll witha different nom system/ballot size. I'd vote, for sure, with the caveat that I haven't *played* that many additional games since 2008!
