Has Dave Matthews Band broke ILX?

Sammy James, Tuesday, 8 July 2003 15:20 (twenty years ago) link

...an entire generation missed out on bands who could actually play!

PLEASE COME BACK YNGWIE ALL IS FORGIVEN!

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 15:23 (twenty years ago) link

Posts like George T's only give me the feeling of sweet, downy-soft, comfy vindication.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 15:23 (twenty years ago) link

This thread is awesome. It's like the Highlander, never going to die until Sean Connery comes along to lop its head off.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 15:24 (twenty years ago) link

As long as google lives so will this thread.

Sammy James, Tuesday, 8 July 2003 15:27 (twenty years ago) link

i hate DMB because of their rabid fans. when people become violent over a band they are not fans, they are clones. i like music because of the way it touches me, not cuz you and all the rest of your pot smoking abercrombie wearing friends like it.

kers3480, Tuesday, 8 July 2003 16:33 (twenty years ago) link

"As for yuppies /lawyers/accountants liking them so what? Is that a reason to hate a band?"

These same people like Huey Lewis.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 16:46 (twenty years ago) link

I wish googlers would start their own thread: "Why DMB must be defended." Because THIS thread is about hating DMB, NOT about why [you/we] like/should like them.

We shouldn't have to have *good* reasons for hating them - just *many* reasons.

(come on 1000!)

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 16:54 (twenty years ago) link

Where is Allison again?

RELEASE THE F*CKING FURY (again)!

J (Jay), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 18:04 (twenty years ago) link

Smart move J, using the asterisk to prevent this thread from being Googled!

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 18:34 (twenty years ago) link

and seriously, he didn't have to go along with that oakenfield/matrix piece of shit.

Felcher (Felcher), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 18:47 (twenty years ago) link

I try.

J (Jay), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 18:56 (twenty years ago) link

My roomates work for our university's computer service and last summer they had to key into every single dorm room on campus for computer maintinence. They reported back that an estimated 8 out of 10 dorm rooms have a DMB poster on the wall. The next closest was, somewhat surprisingly, Scarface.

ben welsh (benwelsh), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 22:25 (twenty years ago) link

haha - that's a portrait of young america

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 22:33 (twenty years ago) link

=\ this hurts...

Allison (Allison), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 23:08 (twenty years ago) link

George, I hate to oppose someone who is "on my side", but really..DMB ISN'T the most talented band in the past 20 years and you saying so only helps to confirm their beliefs that all their fans are narrow-minded college kids that have very low musical standards.
Please don't encourage the regulars...they're blood-sucking fiends, the lot of them!

Allison (Allison), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 23:40 (twenty years ago) link

Please don't encourage the regulars...they're blood-sucking fiends, the lot of them!

Just because you're a regular now doesn't mean you're allowed to give away our vampiric secrets.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:59 (twenty years ago) link

that'd be better.

eedd, Wednesday, 9 July 2003 18:02 (twenty years ago) link

Yngwie Malmsteen > Nirvana

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 9 July 2003 18:04 (twenty years ago) link

OK I am not having the best day of all time and Siegbran's bongo solo just cheered me up somethin' first. Hails to you, S. Now if only somebody would post a picture of that dwarf from Abruptum, preferably photoshopped so he's jammin' with the DMB, my mood power-up will be complete.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 19:45 (twenty years ago) link

J0hn, would you care for some fan art, instead?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 19:51 (twenty years ago) link

KINGFISH, YOU ARE THE MAN

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 19:52 (twenty years ago) link

Because THIS thread is about hating DMB, NOT about why [you/we] like/should like them.

The funny thing is, this thread didn't even start as a "Let's bash DMB" thread -- it was "Let's try to figure out WHY people hate DMB."

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 20:03 (twenty years ago) link

and now we know that the answer is "Because they rufuse to let It from Abruptum, the black metal dwarf, take over Bez duties for them"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 20:04 (twenty years ago) link

And after nearly 950 posts we're none the wiser!
I live in England and I have never heard DMB at all.

Rocky, Wednesday, 9 July 2003 20:06 (twenty years ago) link

And after nearly 950 posts we're none the wiser!

not necessarily. for example, this truism has been finely articulated:

Anyone who calls your genitals "a world" is clearly a creep and pig and will never go down on you unless under extreme duress...

indeed.

and here's a related truism: one of the unpublished & indirect side effects of Paxil is that it makes your jaw ache.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 20:32 (twenty years ago) link

::yawn:: c'mon..I'm feeling fiesty. Gimme a reason to be mean!

What?? Say somethin', bitch!

Is there a prize for the person who makes the 1000th post?

Marriot, Friday, 11 July 2003 10:13 (twenty years ago) link

Yes, you are no longer obligated to pay attention to this thread.

NA. (Nick A.), Friday, 11 July 2003 11:47 (twenty years ago) link

Until it gets near 2000 after Google has this thread as its number 1 link when searching for 'Dave Matthews band'.

Pauline, Friday, 11 July 2003 12:26 (twenty years ago) link

bring on the hippies!

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 11 July 2003 12:30 (twenty years ago) link

Not all Dave Matthews Band fans are hippies, lawyers or college students. They have a cross section of fans of all social backgrounds, religion, color. If people say DMB are the best band in the world then its because they really believe so. Show some respect. I am in no doubt they are the best live band i have ever had the privilege to see. If there any better live bands then tell me and i'll try checking them out.
Most of you dont even have any good reason to hate the band so much. They're really nice guys too!

Ruth, Friday, 11 July 2003 13:12 (twenty years ago) link

Bands I'd rather see live whose stage presence are so different from DMB that comparing them would be silly:

The Cure
Prince
Orbital
The Orb
808 State
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult
The Clientele
Poem-Cees
De La Soul
Sisters Of Mercy
Meat Beat Manifesto
Depeche Mode
Certainly, Sir

Bands who do something vaguely similar to DMB that I'd rather see:

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:16 (twenty years ago) link

Ruth you should check out DMCB cuz they do what Dave do but they haven't lost the eye of the tiger

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:22 (twenty years ago) link

this thread is like a time warp to uh three weeks ago.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:24 (twenty years ago) link

I have yet to meet a millionaire Hasidic Jewish Maori who loves the Dave Matthews Band.

I am in no doubt they are the best live band i have ever had the privilege to see. If there any better live bands then tell me and i'll try checking them out.

ooo! ooo! new thread time!

better live bands?

Mission of Fuckin' Burma, among others.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:04 (twenty years ago) link

I love the DMCB!!

Ruth (Ruth), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:10 (twenty years ago) link

or rather, old thread time

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:11 (twenty years ago) link

Na : I have yet to meet a millionaire Hasidic Jewish Maori.
Dan: I quite like The Cure and Prince.

Ruth (Ruth), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:12 (twenty years ago) link

I don't even hate DMB! They're just there.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:22 (twenty years ago) link

I lurve them Cure and Prince too, Ruth -- but Dan and I are agreed that the Dave Matthews Band exists happily without our positive feedback and ignores our indifference or complaints if they have any sense of self-esteem and/or are laughing all the way to the bank, which I rather assume they are. Now, FANS of the DMB who can't accept that there are such things as differing opinions, that's something else.
