Enemies List, which I'm thinking I may use as my blog name anyway. If it were a band I suppose it would have to some really terrible Clash or Manics ripoff band.

Nicole, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

You can't be a horrible Clash/Manics rip off, that's what Gay Military does, damnit. When we were deciding what to look like, someone grabbed a photo of the Manics w/Traci Lords and decided I'd be Traci Lords, then doled out the Manics accordingly, except we'd have to work camoflague into our outfits.

We still never learnt to play. We coulda been contenders.

Ally, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

It's not like the Manics ever learned to play...

Nicole, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh, I'm well aware. That's why we chose them as a model. The problem is, the Manics HAVE a James Bradfield with actual discernible talent. We, um, didn't. I can't even play a tambourine on time.

Ally, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

If the world was big enough for These Animal Men and S*M*A*S*H, it's big enough for Gay Military and Enemies List.

Note "If".

Tom, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well, we have way better names and images sussed out, hello.

Ally, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Enemies List is good but Gay Military is rubbish cause it makes me think of i) Gay Dad, ii) Pink Industry (actually I've never heard Pink Industry but I've always disliked the name, but Gay Dad is enough anyway).

I'm sure you could do a convincing Manics image, though.

Tom, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The context of the statement was "way better names", with the unsaid portion being "...than S*M*A*S*H or These Animal Men". Not like way better in terms of actually being good - the only reason Gay Military is good at all is cos it'd piss off people in the military, and they could use some annoyance.

I could do convincing Manics. I'm on a mission to force Fred into dressing like that at least once. And force feed him eggs, of course, but that's another thread. If anyone needs advice on how to do convincing Manics, just ask me, okay? Why you'd need that advice, I'm not sure, but if you do.

Ally, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

If our canteen doesnt stop selling cheap chocolates I'll be able to do a convincing Sean all too quickly.

Tom, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Will you get angry and threaten to quit if we try to spray you with gold spray paint too? That'd be great.

Ally, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Gay Dad was a good name: I realise it may have been tarnished.

Pink Military (formerly Pink Military Stand Alone) is a terrible name, long version or short version, but the LP I have by Pink Industry (New Beginnings, Zulu 7, 1985, rubbish sleeve design Jamie Reid/Leaving the 20th Century) is actually great, in a very low key way. Very Zoo. Name = no better, tho.

Taunton. But that's not my idea: it's an imaginary prog band created by comedians Bill Best and Sean Lock (a kind of Spinal Tap with Jethro Tull and Traffic as its blueprint rather than 70s metal bands). They even made records (notably "Human Slaves In An Insect Nation") which were featured on Mark Radcliffe's Radio 1 show circa 1995. So really they don't count.

In that case: when I was about 12 I thought of the name "Bopeep Conundrum" (don't try to beat out of me where it came from). I think even people like Ashley Hutchings or Dave Swarbrick would have flinched from using it for a side project, but I'm afraid to confess I quite liked the name at the time. And, therefore, it must go in.

carsmilesteve, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yes Steve, I seem to remember the Mayhem were fairly entertaining but those Mounds just didn't justify the price of their flights. Hm. The whole weekend remains a touch fuzzy.

Tim, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Hopkins might remember this: back when were doing the Leeds Student newspaper, there came a week when all the singles around were just awful. Mindful of getting a reputation for being too negative, I decided we had to make up a really great record. The band was to be called Flawless, the song Ten-Pin. The problem was that the girl who was reviewing the singles that week just couldn't think of how to describe this record. Me: 'Just imagine the pop perfect song.' She: 'Convenience by Bob.' I was a bit taken aback by this: Convenience was fine as far as skip along, jangly early '90s indie pop went, but not really what you'd think of as up there with the greatest music ever made. Still, it was her call. Me: 'OK, so just imagine a song that's like Convenience... only even better.' She sits there for a while, doesn't type, and then looks at me in agony. She: 'But... but... nothing could be better than Convenience...'

Mark Morris, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I actually do think of these things constantly, like every day, and try to remember but rarely do. But last week, last week I thought of a truly sad one that made me laugh - Volcanic Faction

Oh, dammnit, we ended up *using* all my best fake band names on Entertain Me! I won a competition for coming up with the "best fake Lower East Side band name" with The Jesus Sugarpussy.

Besides, what do I need fake band names for, when we've got the Bull and Gate to provide endlessly amusing *real* ones? "Vomit Formaldehyde and the Booze Apocalypse".

masonic boom, Thursday, 14 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Blimey! Implicated in two made-up-band scenarios. Mark, I recall the pile of singles for review was awful every week that year. Looking through a box of old 7"s the other day, I found a copy of "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" by Sting, a remnant of one of the few times you let my particular brand of positivity anywhere near the singles column. I must remember to throw the damned thing in the rubbish.

I've no idea why you worried about a reputation for negativity with me around.

Bearing in mind the current vogue for all things retro, and the pertinent psychology behind it ('80s slutwear trend propagated by Naice Gels in fashion whose mothers would never let them wear the stuff first time around) I have been planning my joke band for years, based on stuff that freaked me out when I was 13. My groop is SPAM JAVELIN. Our CD has a 'painted sunset/airbrushed unicorn' van (driven by the kind of mong my li'l sis used to date) on the cover and is named after the bumper sticker inevitably seen on the back of these vans. Title of LP: Don't Laugh, Your Daughter May Be Inside.

Songs will be of the 'road' variety and actually all will be named after bumper stickers from the fenders of Evil Wheels (another good one: Huntin', Fishin', But Mostly Foolin')

There used to be a really grim teen, big-hair angst metal combo round our way called Silent Opinion. For a while my own band considered going out as 'Feasable Option' but we gave it a miss as the father of one of the bozos was the local promoter. Other names we considered but rejected.

Give a dog a boner: Big black tribute band.
The Shellsuit family: Nasty Techno duo.
Swastika family robinson. As above but with gothic overtones.
Built up shoe. A bit Primal Screamish, but funkier.
The underpants show. Fall tribute.

All utterly vile but funny at the time. we did actually do a few gigs as ABBA though.
