free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Monday, 17 August 2009 00:13 (fourteen years ago) link

Here's an Idea:

Search page:

Any chance of adding "thread last updated" date to the result, when you are searching threads?

What happens at the mo is you get loads of similarly named threads for, say, "Kraftwerk", and you end up clicking each to find the most relevant/up-to-date one to add your new comment/info to.

Mark G, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 07:09 (fourteen years ago) link

If you tap "most relevant first" when searching for a thread, I think the threads will appear in the order they've last been updated, so the one with the newest posts will be the first result.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 07:44 (fourteen years ago) link

I guess there should be some sort of explanation what "most relevant first" actually means, it took me a while to get it.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 07:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Been enjoying the various music writing threads of late -- how about the re-emergence of an I Love Writing board?

dog latin, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 08:05 (fourteen years ago) link

xpost Yeah, but what is "Relevance"?

Date last updated? Number of messages already in thread?

Actually, both of those would be good. They used to be on all threads on "New Answers" back inthe day.

idea: a "View Next Page" link at the bottom of an abbreviated page to go with the "View Previous Page" at the top

it would be really cool if ilx could have a bikini babe of the day displayed on the "boards" page. just a thought.

Actually, this already sort of exists. Just click the "Permalink" button on the last post of the abbreviated page and it'll give you a new abbreviated page starting with that post.

ooh, resourcefulness! I like that

(not sure if this has been covered)

Can we have a "results 1-10 of n" thing on the search results page?

firestorm of twat rage (onimo), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 10:14 (fourteen years ago) link

maybe on a user's profile: "see last __ posts by this user" where __ = a #

in excelsis ayo (roxymuzak), Friday, 21 August 2009 20:24 (fourteen years ago) link

Hey I was just thinking it would be nice if when you searched, the page would tell you not just when the threads were started but when the last post was. That way, for example, if there are three threads on ILM about a certain band that just put out a new album, you can see which one people might have been talking about the new album on.

cosign last two requests

stfuhut (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 1 September 2009 01:36 (fourteen years ago) link

It would also be helpful if the search page told you how many total posts were in each thread. I just revived a credit card thread, and the main thing slowing me down was trying to find one with a decent amount of posts in it.

OLIGARHY (Z S), Tuesday, 1 September 2009 01:47 (fourteen years ago) link

idea: in the search page instead of entering a date range have an option of all threads in the past week

maybe if this is too much work, can the most recently updated thread be shown first? like, if i'm searching "momus" i'd like the most recently posted-to thread to be the easiest to find, instead of digging thru 5 pages of threads

k3vin k., Tuesday, 8 September 2009 03:31 (fourteen years ago) link

An easier way to browse the lesser-used boards would be nice. Right now the only way is to search for most recent updates week-by-week. It's not an issue on ILE and ILM, where there are always a hundred or so threads up on the new answers page, but on say I Love Books there's no easy way to see what's been discussed in the not-quite-immediate past.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 07:04 (fourteen years ago) link

I was gonna suggest a preview post option - but after searching this extended page, 4 people already have. So - I fifth that.

iatee, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 07:53 (fourteen years ago) link

xpost I agree, especially for the AF and IPC boards, they are near dead but I'd still really like to more easily browse through older threads.

Nhex, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 08:30 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd like to be able to search a particular board like in t' old days, so you don't get 17 pages of results from I Love Everything when you search for a band name that happens to be a common word.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 09:05 (fourteen years ago) link

CP, there's a 'Search Board' drop-down list, just select ILM on that.

Peinlich Manoeuvre (NickB), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 09:06 (fourteen years ago) link

On the search page I should add.

Peinlich Manoeuvre (NickB), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 09:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh right, so there is. Has that always been there? My powers of observation are weak.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 09:08 (fourteen years ago) link

I think so, but my brain tends to avoid looking down beyond a certain point too, so I couldn't swear to it.

Peinlich Manoeuvre (NickB), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 09:12 (fourteen years ago) link

It's been there since nu-search was installed.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 12:51 (fourteen years ago) link

And I love it!

Tuomas, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 12:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Tell you what I love:

The Open and Filled in dot. On the left of the question on "New Answers"

i.e. "You have visited this thread, and there are new answers you haven't seen"

Brill.

Would that there was an option on threads where you could select "Pretend I've never been in this thread" for threads you don't care about there being any new answers anymore...

Mark G, Thursday, 10 September 2009 16:11 (fourteen years ago) link

When sending ILXmail, would it be possible to have an option to CC that mail to oneself?

Hugh Manatee (WmC), Thursday, 10 September 2009 16:54 (fourteen years ago) link

ooh... seconded.

feature request: i want to hide my bookmarks

crabRCISE (gbx), Thursday, 10 September 2009 16:59 (fourteen years ago) link

As I've been staring at the Mad Men and Curb Your Enthusiasm threads today and trying not to click them (since I haven't seen the latest episodes yet), I've been wondering if a Hide Thread feature would be useful and/or viable. I mean, I can always just keep exercising willpower, but other posters might have their own reasons for hiding threads, even if it's just because the title gets on their nerves. But there would have to be a way to get them to appear again, too.

jaymc, Monday, 21 September 2009 17:47 (fourteen years ago) link

This would be nice, but structurally at least it's running against the design choice of having different boards. If I'm not interested in, eh, AFL (whatever that is), I don't have to have that board appear on my SNA. I like the present system of not having topics too carefully shuffled into separate boards---IL*E*---but then it would be nice to skip all the kinds of threads on ILE that I don't care about.

Soul Finger! (Euler), Monday, 21 September 2009 19:45 (fourteen years ago) link

ILX threads can get so fast that it's more like chat than forum, so even 2mins can be way too long.

― stet, Saturday, 1 August 2009 21:00 (1 month ago)

That's for some threads. For others, Rolling Reggaeton and Salsa, Rolling Whirled, Chitlin Circuit Soul, and Reggae Dancehall 2008-2009 there are barely any people posting. How do we more fans of these genres to discover ILX and post here? :(

curmudgeon, Monday, 21 September 2009 20:39 (fourteen years ago) link

How do we get more fans....

Maybe if I proofread my writing.

curmudgeon, Monday, 21 September 2009 20:40 (fourteen years ago) link

I guess that's not really an idea for ilx---hmmmm, wonder how to bring partisans of these other genres to ILX...

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 14:19 (fourteen years ago) link

It would be neat if you could change your vote in a poll. Before it closes, I mean.

Poxy Fule Of Kryptonite (The Yellow Kid), Wednesday, 23 September 2009 22:31 (fourteen years ago) link

cosign that! Sometimes the lobbying and stanning is very persuasive.

Hugh Manatee (WmC), Wednesday, 23 September 2009 22:37 (fourteen years ago) link

you can already vote like once a day iirc

k3vin k., Thursday, 24 September 2009 00:36 (fourteen years ago) link

once a week iirc

heave haw (roxymuzak), Thursday, 24 September 2009 03:35 (fourteen years ago) link

it's more like once every two days tbh, or at least it seems like it

iirc flair (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 24 September 2009 03:43 (fourteen years ago) link

it seems weird to me that when you start a thread or poll, it's possible to type a title or poll option that's longer than what will appear on the actual thread. like, if you type "The Gettysburg Address, Delivered by President Abraham Lincoln on November 19, 1863" into the title box, it'll get truncated to "The Gettysburg Address, Delivered by President Abra" or something like that. it would be nice if you got a message along the lines of "YOU HAVE EXCEEDED THE 60 CHARACTER LIMIT FOR THREAD TITLES, YOU DUMMIE" when you tried to type something that long. either that or just make the box shorter so it's not even possible to type such a long title. just a thought.

What are the benefits of dating a younger guy, better erections? (darraghmac), Thursday, 24 September 2009 16:03 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah that is quite annoying

heave haw (roxymuzak), Friday, 25 September 2009 04:35 (fourteen years ago) link

cosign the bookmark hiding. i don't use them for update notification so it's a bit annoying having to scroll down past everytime i'm signed in.

ahh that click permalink to view previous page (rather than loading the entire thread) is a godsend!! i realise the bookmarks are supposed to cater to this but it'd be a nice alternative if "view previous page" was another option in the "skipping x messages" red box.

r|t|c, Friday, 25 September 2009 11:52 (fourteen years ago) link

Sorry if this has already been covered - what do the different bullets on the New Answers pages mean?

nate woolls, Friday, 25 September 2009 11:54 (fourteen years ago) link

i realise the bookmarks are supposed to cater to this but it'd be a nice alternative if "view previous page" was another option in the "skipping x messages" red box.

Seconding this; quite often open a 1000-post thread to discover that apparently I last read it like 4 posts before the new start.
(Mostly read ILX logged out, so no bookmarks, and if it could do this for logged-out readers too that would be great)

a passing spacecadet, Friday, 25 September 2009 12:01 (fourteen years ago) link

nate: one type of bullet for threads you've read which have new posts since you last read them (while logged in), the other type for threads you're up-to-date on or have never looked at (while logged in)

"(while logged in)" caveat is in case you are like me and mostly reading logged out

a passing spacecadet, Friday, 25 September 2009 12:03 (fourteen years ago) link

ah thanks

nate woolls, Friday, 25 September 2009 12:08 (fourteen years ago) link

someone might've mentioned this already, but it'd be nice if instead of just the "load all messages" option, there was also a "load all recent messages" option so you don't have to scroll through the whole thread to find the beginning of the recent bump
