yeah iTunes has basically made the singles chart more like the album chart, where the size of an artist's fanbase and how big their last record was determines what's big, not whether the song itself is really well liked and getting listened to and requested by everyone everywhere.

I <3 this week's top 10:

1. "Whatever You Like" - T.I. *7 weeks*
2. "Live Your Life" - T.I. feat. Rihanna *airplay gainer*
3. "If I Were A Boy" - Beyoncé
4. "So What" - Pink
5. "Womanizer" - Britney Spears
6. "Hot N Cold" - Katy Perry
7. "Let It Rock'" - Kevin Rudolf feat. Lil Wayne
8. "Miss Independent" - Ne-Yo
9. "Disturbia" - Rihanna
10. "I'm Yours'" - Jason Mraz *sales gainer*

Minus "Miss Independent" though. But even Beyonce's new song is growing on me.

ILX MOD (musically), Thursday, 30 October 2008 15:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Anyone know of a book or good long article that talks about how the US chart came to be so dominated by rap and R&B?

Cittaslow Mazza (blueski), Thursday, 30 October 2008 15:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh, thanks, Al. I didn't see this until now, so it's a little late, but if I have another question I'll e-mail you.

jaymc, Thursday, 30 October 2008 15:56 (fifteen years ago) link

"Miss Independent" and "Live Your Life" are the only songs in the top ten I like right now : /

Gene Amondson (The Reverend), Thursday, 30 October 2008 17:46 (fifteen years ago) link

man that is a hilariously awful top 10

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 October 2008 17:47 (fifteen years ago) link

miss independent is the best song on there by miles

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 October 2008 17:47 (fifteen years ago) link

I kind of hate that the default for pop in '08 is this stompy 4x4 that doesn't have enough syncopation going on above it to feel like house or disco

Gene Amondson (The Reverend), Thursday, 30 October 2008 17:50 (fifteen years ago) link

'whatever you like' is the best, duh

lex pretend, Thursday, 30 October 2008 17:50 (fifteen years ago) link

miss independent is the best song on there by miles

It's the best, but I've come around to "Live Your Life."

the remix of it is the best...hccr's bambossa mix. not a dramatic mix but punches it up.

G'n'R down from 3 to 18, more a case of 'out of sight out of mind' than 'absence makes the heart grow fonder'.

Billy Dods, Thursday, 11 December 2008 20:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Colby O'Donis owns that song! I find Lady Gaga's voice irritating...reminds me of the (whiny) girlfriend i never had ;_;

Someone Still Loves You Evan and Jaron (Tape Store), Thursday, 11 December 2008 20:34 (fifteen years ago) link

- anyone know why "can't believe it" was the sales gainer this week?

- lady gaga looks certifiably insane
