so dreamy. "want you back" is like a melted fantasy of madonna.

her weakest track...the ONLY weak track.

Spinspin Sugah, Sunday, 16 August 2009 05:18 (6 years ago) Permalink

ha, no. the album does have some weakish tracks, but they don't bother me in the context of the album. but "want you back" is peak material. it's not afraid of itself.

Can't stop listening to Want You Back

Trip Maker, Thursday, 27 August 2009 22:27 (6 years ago) Permalink

that "artificial intelligence" song upthread is really nice. the synths are very nostalgic to me. they remind me of joe jackson or something. or like 80s yes.

Love this. Heard from folks who saw her in London that it was a bit dull live, but I guess I can see it might. Great stuff though.

Me and my dad love these two. This new wave of lo-fi/no-fi goodness keeps getting better and better. It's all very "cable access performance".

I had high hopes for this but my goodness, is this ever the wrong end of the 80s for me

I do like the hook on the chorus, though, when her voice comes in and it's all pretty

it just reminds me of the "nightclub" scene in so many cop operas on telly in the late 80s

also nite funk= whole album! (sorry if that's old news but i just assumed am i gonna make it was a 1 off)

no fear, Sunday, 25 April 2010 12:53 (6 years ago) Permalink

I assumed Nite-Funk as a one-off as well, but this news of a whole album is the kind of shit that gets me excited.

There is going to be a Nite Jewel thread on the roof of a building in my town in a couple of weeks and I'm pretty stoked.
I just hope it gets some promotional help, or that the right few people tell their friends about it. It's the kind of event that could easily fly under the radar.

"Want You Back" is my favorite. I've only got a crummy rip of Good Evening, it'd be nice to hear that on vinyl.

new song "am i real?" w/ teen inc is really good:

titchyschneiderhouserules (s1ocki), Thursday, 29 July 2010 19:13 (5 years ago) Permalink

I figured it was maybe tour only. I got one from them on the road.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 29 July 2010 19:54 (5 years ago) Permalink

that's how i bought teh first one

titchyschneiderhouserules (s1ocki), Thursday, 29 July 2010 19:56 (5 years ago) Permalink

tour only, uh huh. some of it was on a japanese 7" too i think. i liked another horizon the most. think stones throw are rereleasing her LP, too.

Forget You and I is gorgeous.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 13:31 (5 years ago) Permalink

Weak For Me is perfect. The rest of the songs tend to get a little too moody and lost.

coolsundays, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 19:41 (5 years ago) Permalink

The newer stuff is much more consistent imo.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 19:42 (5 years ago) Permalink

i think i'm just waiting til the next LP to see if she's kinda jumped the shark in terms of ditching her woozy futuristic bedroom-synths thing, in favour of overtly celebratory eighties music. i like it all just as much, but it seems like a weird, deliberate step, that doesn't usually bode well for musicians.

the new one is pretty jiving anyhow

schlump, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 17:14 (5 years ago) Permalink

How many copies of Good Evening were made on vinyl? I wanna bid on one but don't wanna over pay.

a bunch, i thought?, in case you're still thinking about it. it's getting re-pressed on stones throw sometime, anyway.

she's collaborating with julia holter at the minute, which sounds like a good combo

does it have hooks?

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Friday, 10 June 2016 02:16 (2 weeks ago) Permalink

Not as many as One Second

calstars, Friday, 10 June 2016 03:14 (2 weeks ago) Permalink

It sounds a lot more full-bodied than anything before, thd production is very thick and humid. Not a great deal of hooks and her voice feels somewhat obscured but I still enjoyed it.

boxedjoy, Friday, 10 June 2016 07:09 (2 weeks ago) Permalink

hmm, new one not hitting the sweet spot very often. feels a little underworked at times; the songs sometimes seem to go on forever with minimal variation. feels like a holding motion, honestly.

Nothing But Scenery is awesome and deep

calstars, Saturday, 18 June 2016 20:04 (1 week ago) Permalink

yeah so heavy & unusual; bc it starts so unadorned it was v surprising to play the record & hear it, but it has shades of the weird repurposing mission nj records have generally, i think. i remember reading some interview w her forever ago where she talks abt synthetic sounds from the eighties having a second act, like there having been a literally creative phase in which instruments were invented but their use being sort of truncated by the limits of the era in which they were populated, & it's so hazy & kind of eerie to hear her duet in sync w/ chiming synth noise

schlump, Sunday, 19 June 2016 00:26 (1 week ago) Permalink

agree, it's a very strange *sounding* album but can't put my finger on exactly how

calstars, Sunday, 19 June 2016 03:01 (1 week ago) Permalink

i don't like the vocals

ejemplo (crüt), Monday, 20 June 2016 13:43 (1 week ago) Permalink

Too much echo and reverb. There seems to be some good singing underneath all of tgat, but it's hard to tell.
