T. Maybe.

Thanks Milton, for that !/2 thing, I've never been able to locate it. Organisation's Ruckzuck is quite hilarious. Bongo's?
Thansk Stevie for the Leverkusen gig. German girls making fun of fahr'n fahr'n fahr'n :-D

Local recordshop has a few Kraftwerk boots on vinyl. Don't know them by heart but a here's a few:
Somewhere in Europe (Side a is Paris, b is Utrecht iirc)
Showroom Dummies (double LP, not sure about the title, it's a UK gig from 1975)
an LP with WDR recordings (amongst which both Kometenmelodies and Autobahn)
a double LP with 1975 US recordings.
and probably two more I forgot

Tips as to what's good? Should probably get them all, right? ;-)

willem et al have you all heard the Kraftneu! recordings? There's the legendary K4 bootleg, and apparently there's another one from St. Ingbert, '71

I've got the K4 and love it, don't know the St. Ingbert boot.

Just found it on my hard drve; kinda sounds like shit and is cut off at the end.

Great stuff, guys

Somewhere in Europe (Side a is Paris, b is Utrecht iirc)

the 20 minutes from Olympia, Paris, 19760228 are a beautiful radio concert w/ good sound grade A if you like 'Ralf and Florian'. the Utrecht side is 6 songs from 1981, all great but leaves out too many of the best things from the 1981 tour (I recommend '19810907 - Virtu ex Machina (Tokyo)' is a good soundboard recording, '19810703 - Live at the Hammersmith Odeon, London' is a room recording but has an incredible 8-bit toy solo in 'Pocket Calculator', and the 'It's More Fun To Compute' encore at 150 bpm = yes

Showroom Dummies (double LP, not sure about the title, it's a UK gig from 1975)

want to hear this

an LP with WDR recordings (amongst which both Kometenmelodies and Autobahn)

this is one of the first ones that made it to CD as 'Super Golden Radio Shows'. pretty low fidelity for a radio gig. hearing this actually put me off the trail of hunting down 70's live kraftwerk for a long time, and it's definitely not as good as the semi-legit Concert Classics which anyone still reading this almost certainly wants

a double LP with 1975 US recordings.

there are so many I haven't heard. I have an LP of them playing Kentucky that's very fuzzy, but has a crazy four on the floor kickdrum for 'Tanzmusik' that shows just how different they played the set night to night

I'd love to hear the St. Ingert, even though all reports put it at barely listenable

Milton Parker, Friday, 14 August 2009 21:47 (fourteen years ago) link

Will work on upping the Ingbert tonight. Milton, do you have anything good from 90/91ish when they performed "Tour de France" or the 97/98 shows with the "new songs"?

claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Friday, 14 August 2009 22:41 (fourteen years ago) link

still haven't heard any 90/91 shows, which would be interesting to hear because it's the one post-digital but pre-laptop tour

the ZKM concert was the only one where they played all three of the new songs: http://sickness-abounds.blogspot.com/2008/08/kraftwerk-robotronik-bermensch.html

Milton Parker, Friday, 14 August 2009 22:51 (fourteen years ago) link

MP what's your favorite live recording of "Numbers"? And why?

claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Saturday, 15 August 2009 02:15 (fourteen years ago) link

the 97/98 digital retool of 'Numbers', the update gave it just enough of a twist that it was almost overwhelming as an opening number, and my favorite recording is the one at the Warfield because I remember many of the exact screams

Milton Parker, Saturday, 15 August 2009 06:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Thanks for your elaborate answer, Milton.
I'm going on a two week trip tomorrow but I'll definitely check out a couple of the boots when I return

claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Sunday, 16 August 2009 16:11 (fourteen years ago) link

From what I gather from "Tour de France" and this version of "Sex Object", Techno Pop is essentially a lost electro album. Which severely breaks my heart.

claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Sunday, 16 August 2009 16:12 (fourteen years ago) link

Thanks claws for the reup. I always forget about RS limits.

Really enjoying these bootlegs!

From what I remember, Techno Pop had to be totally scrapped because it was practically in the can when MIDI came out and changed everything. I think they thought that it would sound horribly dated if they released it as-is, and that MIDI would change their entire touring setup as well.

I would imagine generally by the early eighties that most Kling Klang studio time was spent figuring out what the latest tech was, only to have something else come out which they then had to get to grips with, etc etc. The learning and experimentation curve probably precluded making any music once the pace of technology increased to a certain point and they had some measure of financial success. Ralf was quoted as saying that Florian spent most of the last couple decades working on 'speech synthesis, things like that'.

Is there an MSRP for The Catalogue yet? This is the first/only box set in my entire life I'm fully willing to buy (except the In Rainbows discbox which was a ridiculous spur-of-the-moment impulse buy, not that I regret it...)

claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 15:55 (fourteen years ago) link

does anyone else feel like no including the first three albums is a bit of a sham? when i had to write a news story about this for xlr8r, i exclaimed aloud, "NO Ralf und Florian? NO credibility" and one of my editors chuckled a bit.

Why the hell is this coming out on Mute in the UK? I know it's part of EMI now but all Kraftwerk's albums have been released on EMI and this box set should be no different. I mean, I like Mute and all, but they have had nothing to do with Kraftwerk in the past.

anagram, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 22:25 (fourteen years ago) link

maybe Kraftwerk the hell wanted a dedicated staff who would actually care the hell about the project and do their best to work it the hell to retail and press

And you think they're more likely to get that from Mute than from the parent company? ROTFL

um, yeah?

Mark G, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 08:49 (fourteen years ago) link

like, of course?

Mark G, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 08:49 (fourteen years ago) link

There are good and bad people working in every record company. Just because a label has a cachet of cool is no guarantee that they will care more about a project or be able to work it any better than a major label.

anagram, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 09:55 (fourteen years ago) link

True, but I get the impression Mute are better than most in the 'cool' stakes. See their handling of the Can back catalogue for comparison.

Mark G, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 09:59 (fourteen years ago) link

I mean 'better than most 'cool' labels in their handling of projects...

Mark G, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 09:59 (fourteen years ago) link

(also, the 'parent company' being EMI, who I wouldn't trust to run a jumble sale right now...)

Sounds GREAT! But this is the single version, does this mean there's going to be bonus tracks on the albums? (at least, I don't have this one yet - the one on the Man Machine is much slower and the one on The Mix is completely different)

StanM, Friday, 2 October 2009 17:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh wait, it's an edit from the The Mix version. nevermind. Great remaster, though. Yay!

= 8 seconds from The Robots @ 320 kbps from The Mix (2004 promo remaster leak)
followed by the same 8 seconds from the 2009 remaster.

From the MOJO interview, when asked about the first 3 albums not being part of The Catalogue:

"They are coming. We are working on them with more drawings, more paintings, more photographs. We are working on the old tapes, they are very dusty".

The one change that I know of is 'House Phone' is added to the Techno Pop tracklisting.

holy shit the 1973 single version of "Kometenmelodie" is absolutely gorgeous. I guess I need to get into early Kraftwerk? Or is this single atypical?

The Man Machine: The Story of Kraftwerk
Saturday (2010-01-16), 22:00 on BBC Radio 2

Jarvis Cocker presents the story of a group of musicians who've influenced artists and movements as diverse as David Bowie, Coldplay, hip hop and the New Romantics.

The programme features a rare interview with Kraftwerk founding member and the only remaining original, Ralph Hutter. It also examines the part played in the "Krautrock" movement by other German electronic music exponents of the 70s, such as Neu! and Tangerine Dream.
