lol dan, I am having a very similar Threads experience, where every time I go over there I encounter a long screed from someone I don’t know that is impressively dumb

Threads defaults to "for you," you have to toggle it back to "following" every time you visit.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 13 March 2024 13:37 (one month ago) link

Will do.

I quit X months ago and do not regret that one bit, except when somebody posts something interesting and says look at this thread on X and I don't understand how and why anybody still posts there at all.

i def don’t care enough to troubleshoot it

yeah true although I've decided it was a personal but slightly botched shadowban by Musk directly, makes us both feel like a big man

once you futz enough with the feed settings you kinda realize the genius of bluesky. the way you can have multiple feeds each one customizable is actually really cool, but the default feed they start you out on is terrible. i recommend going Only Posts. i like algorithmic feeds like For You on twitter but the algorithm has been going facebook style crazy on me lately, i liked a tweet with a pic of Jeanine Garofalo on the Larry sanders show from some “Actresses of the Nineties” account and now my feed is like 30% sexy celeb pics

I just left X/Twitter - no way that fascist gets any more attention from me. Political violence / misogyny / xenophobia has no place in modern society. I just don't get how we let this nutjob get so many federal contracts. Elmo can choke on whatever drug he's mainlining.

The economics of groceries is what frustrates me.

If I want a BLT, I must buy a whole loaf of bread, a pack of bacon, and a tomato, hoping my mayo hasn't expired.

I want a proportionally-priced "kit" to make 1-2 sandwiches, as I end up throwing out so many leftover ingredients

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 19 March 2024 21:47 (one month ago) link

why can't he freeze the bread and bacon?

jaymc, Tuesday, 19 March 2024 22:56 (one month ago) link

in the replies he genuinely seems to be complaining that he can't buy half a tomato

Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Tuesday, 19 March 2024 23:31 (one month ago) link

We need to set up a market where people can trade tomato halves online

President Keyes, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:15 (one month ago) link

Funny how there isn’t something that starts with an L that also goes into a BLT, that seems weird

epistantophus, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:16 (one month ago) link

it stands for lmayonnaise

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:18 (one month ago) link

Seriously though, this person must be a) bad at shopping, b) bad at preparing their own food, and c) TERRIBLE at planning. If you just want a BLT, buy a damn BLT

epistantophus, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:21 (one month ago) link

i might eat a blt

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:22 (one month ago) link

damn if only there were other meals that could use *checks notes* bread, bacon, tomato or mayo in part or in combination with other things

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:22 (one month ago) link

1-2 blts

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:23 (one month ago) link

Or buy that whole loaf of bread and ~reap the benefits~ of extra bread!

epistantophus, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:23 (one month ago) link

I’m bad at meal planning in general but add some sliced deli meat? Different sandwich. Egg? French toast with your bacon. Mayo? Get you a spoon and eat it

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:24 (one month ago) link

Yeah now I could go for a BLT too, and I already ate, FML

epistantophus, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:25 (one month ago) link

now I’m all amped up and I want to go to the store to buy a leaf of lettuce, a slice of tomato, two slices of bread, two pieces of bacon and a pocketful of mayo

epistantophus, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:27 (one month ago) link

If I can’t do that then why are there even stores

epistantophus, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:28 (one month ago) link

just bring all the stuff to the cashier and ask them to make you a sandwich

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:30 (one month ago) link

the thing is, a full tomato is just a vessel to keep those couple perfect slices fresh. the rest can be compost

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:32 (one month ago) link

i usually just eat the rest of the tomato on the side as a lil salad if you will

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:33 (one month ago) link

That’s true, ime the rest gets diced up and thrown into whatever I’m cooking. Gotta get to that next fresh tomato!

epistantophus, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:34 (one month ago) link

old fridge tomoato, no thank you

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:36 (one month ago) link

It seems obvious that this person's food preparation skills top out at "I can make a sandwich" and they only use this skill at rare intervals because almost all their meals are either cold cereal, take-out, or microwaved. Why they'd trumpet this to the world eludes me.

leftovers are good, if you had nice food and theres some left youre all im gonna heat that stuff up and eat it hell yeah

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:52 (one month ago) link

this guy should just make his own bread then he could make very small loaves, problem solved

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 20 March 2024 00:53 (one month ago) link

He makes a good point that it's hard to shop and cook for one person. There are a lot of things that you couldn't make for just yourself without major effort and waste. I've been trying to balance shopping and cooking for myself for years.

If you want to try new interesting recipes it requires forethought as to what can be saved and a willingness to throw stuff out

Dan S, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 01:03 (one month ago) link

im eating the blt

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 01:08 (one month ago) link

I dunno Ive been one person many times in my adult life and I never had an issue buying groceries and using what was left for other meals. This guy reeks of "young male who was never shown how proper home economics works" which ISTG seems to be 80% of the fucking men Ive ever known for some reason.

No one actively SHOWED ME how to use the rest of a tomato, head of lettuce or loaf of bread. Why is common sense so lacking in some people. GAAAHHHH.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 20 March 2024 01:26 (one month ago) link

concocting a meal from ingredients on hand is fun and edifying

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 01:28 (one month ago) link

I'm all about the leftovers. Though I do take it too far and often have a fridge full of 2-week-old tiny tupperwares full of a 1/4 can of corn, some shredded chicken, and 4 olives lol.

and anyway i’d like to know more about this “proportionally sized” sandwich “kit” - does it look anything like… a sandwich?

epistantophus, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 01:39 (one month ago) link

er, proportionally priced, that is

epistantophus, Wednesday, 20 March 2024 01:40 (one month ago) link

I left my Kraft Mayo out accidentally but hope that it is full of enough preservatives that I won't die when I eat it again.

Part of the problem for me is that I have frequent visitors who all have their own food needs. I end up with a refrigerator full of stuff that I wouldn't buy for myself.

I love leftovers, but making a typical recipe of a meal for six is burdensome. I don't want to eat the same thing for five more days, I just don't. And reducing the quantities in the recipe to one just makes it a slog

I make my own sourdough bread. It requires a dutch oven (like a Le Creuset). It is fantastic, as good as Tartine's. I slice it up, eat some, and put the remainder into the freezer for later. I can give you all the recipe if you want, but it is long.

Along with the bread I freeze bolognese sauce, rice, homemade chicken broth, soups etc. But there are a lot of recipes that require fresh ingredients that have to be bought in quantity and cannot be saved
