Any reason to buy these for those of us who own all the albums on CD already? Sounds like extra packaging but nothing in the way of new/unreleased music... not really into those types of reissues.

Remastered sound?

StanM, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 13:57 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh my god, I'm listening to the original '83 version of "Tour de France" right now and am FLIPPING OUT

for the first time

Remastered sound?

The remastering will be the selling point for me. The CDs that we've been listening to for the last twenty years leave a lot to be desired.

will "Techno Pop" be mythical lost album or just "Electric Cafe" with original title?

Fox Force Five Punchline (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 21:20 (fourteen years ago) link

wikipedia says it's just electric cafe with the original title

elan, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 21:23 (fourteen years ago) link

ralf and florian is nice, summery, kind of hawaiian

-- this explains why i like that lp so much!

amateurist, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 21:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Techno Pop was basically a failed album that had the best parts remixed into Electric Cafe. I doubt it will ever seen the light of day and I am not too upset about it. It would be neat to hear out of curiosity, but I doubt they have eight Tour de France style joints sitting in the can waiting to be heard.

That being said, I can only imagine what they have in their archives. I would love to hear the demos for songs that didn't make the cut for their studio albums. They will never be heard while Hutter is alive, but it will be interesting to see how his estate handles the music.

It will also be interesting to see who is credited on the box set. I wonder if Schneider will have his name removed like Bartos and Flur.

.. and Conny Plank...

Mark G, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 22:00 (fourteen years ago) link

1983 demo version of 'Techno Pop' is utterly different than album version, almost a 70's retrench with the Orchestron vocal choir playing the chord sequence, I like it better than the album version

& there were three new tunes on the 98 tour than remain unreleased, I can see why but I'd still love a studio version of the one that sounds like their take on Basic Channel

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 22:07 (fourteen years ago) link

word! is that demo vers floating around somewhere reachable?
the live versions I've heard of the "Techno Pop" stuff is pretty great ... hard-hitting, muscular stuff

Fox Force Five Punchline (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 22:21 (fourteen years ago) link

usual place, + demo version of 'techno pop' widely available on 'ultra rare trax volume 2' comp, most widely available bootleg of 97/98 tour is 'Computer Sinfonien ZKM'

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 22:39 (fourteen years ago) link

correction, one word "Computersinfonien"

but "Tribal Gathering" and "Live at the Fillmore" boots pretty good too

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 22:40 (fourteen years ago) link

ace, thanks!

Fox Force Five Punchline (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 22:43 (fourteen years ago) link

"but "Tribal Gathering" and "Live at the Fillmore" boots pretty good too"

for a second i'm thinking i clicked on the live dead thread by mistake...

scott seward, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 22:50 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah I mean "Fillmore" is a better, more lush recording that captures more of the vibe of the night, but at "Tribal" Ralf was just so on

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 22:57 (fourteen years ago) link

The only Kraftwerk recordings I have are 70's era, including the one with Rother + Dinger, and this one from Leverkusen with a 40 minute Autobahn

claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 22:59 (fourteen years ago) link

you know where leonardo is? I've been looking for Leverkusen forever, I'll put up 1975 Brighton if you post that one

to go back to "Tribal" it was like Ralf had all this energy that you could literally see rising out of his hands, and it wasn't the acid because I asked Mary and she saw the same tendrils

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 23:02 (fourteen years ago) link

It's in flac or shn; what's the best way to send something of that size?

claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 23:24 (fourteen years ago) link

i quite liked the three late 90s demos esp. the Tribal '97 one. actually 'Tango' was a bit shit but they kept doing that live for a while unlike the other two.

unban dictionary (blueski), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 23:27 (fourteen years ago) link

oh jeez, probably zipping the flac files would get them under sendspace-able 300 MB

I know this is bad form trading right out here on the street but seriously if they sold this shit legit we wouldn't be in the sorry state we are right now man

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 23:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh it's fine, I got it all on dime/dc++ anyway. It's not like it's copyrighted or anything.

claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 23:35 (fourteen years ago) link

Relistening to this Autobahn for the first time in like 6 years. Sound quality's kind of shit, but performance is simply transcendent. If this isn't A++++ I don't know what is; the motorik breakdown alone is like 10 minutes. Will post soon.

The whole thing's 980 megs though; I think I'll just V0 this or something.

Leverkusen is hilarious, it's rare to hear that many technical problems / mistakes, it's enjoyable. and that version of Autobahn is hands down beautiful.

for the Brighton show they'd just bought the Orchestron, so it's a fun chance to hear them use those TEE Strings / Radioactivity Choir samples on almost every single song

not a single one of the 70's shows I don't want to hear at least once: http://www.valand.gu.se/dm/students/andreas/kw_skivor/bootlegs.html

They never did perform "Europe Endless"/"Endless Endless"/"Franz Schubert" live did they? I would killlll to hear one...

claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:18 (fourteen years ago) link

you should track down the london roundhouse gig from 1976, they do "europe endless" and a version of "trans europe express" that sounds like a work in progress, quite different from the released version

zappi, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:28 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd love to hear that

also, above, when saying 'Live at the Fillmore' I in fact meant '19980607 - Live at the Warfield, SF'

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:39 (fourteen years ago) link

I know this is retarded and I love Kraftwerk but seeing them live this year made me sad. Maybe they're too old for this sort of thing now. :(

Turangalila, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:40 (fourteen years ago) link

listening back (cough cough) "europe endless" is not quite there either, the rhythm is different & faster, extra vocal bits etc. its quite odd hearing songs you know inside out at an earlier stage.

zappi, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 23:52 (fourteen years ago) link

seeing them live this year made me sad.

I saw them last year and it was AMAZING (had never seen Florian-including lineup though)

Yeah, I skipped the early 00s UK dates because I thought I would prefer to imagine how they'd have been at the time of releasing their best music rather than see them now, but inspired by last-tour-ever rumours I was considering seeing them next month in Helsinki...

(Mainly I just noticed I have some leave left and thought that Helsinki would be fun and a music festival in Helsinki would be extra fun and a music festival with Kraftwerk headlining would be, uh, extra extra fun.)

a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 13 August 2009 13:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Jori Hulkkonen's Acid Symphony is opening for Kraftwerk in Helsinki. You should go. I've seen clips of their performance and it's really unique and fun. Then you could stick around and see 4 old dudes stand behind laptops with cool visuals projected behind them.

Bwahahaha. QFT.

Turangalila, Thursday, 13 August 2009 18:12 (fourteen years ago) link

the whole second half of that Leverkusen gig is top notch. the version of Kristallo is intense, and what in the world is that Irish jig that Ralf moogs into for the last ten minutes of the show? it's closer to Roedelius than anything they ever came close to putting on a record, even the keyboard noodling on 'Ralf and Florian' is restrained compared to that. Cluster and Kraftwerk really were on parallel tracks in 1974... thanks for posting SD.

I would love to hear the rest of that Roundhouse gig, not to beg for further generosity. Here's 'Kraftwerk !/2', which was a CDR of all their 70/71 WDR TV appearances put out by the same Seidr label that released 'K4' -- it should have gotten the same amount of attention, but it's clever title is unfortunately completely googleproof

T. Maybe.

Thanks Milton, for that !/2 thing, I've never been able to locate it. Organisation's Ruckzuck is quite hilarious. Bongo's?
Thansk Stevie for the Leverkusen gig. German girls making fun of fahr'n fahr'n fahr'n :-D

Local recordshop has a few Kraftwerk boots on vinyl. Don't know them by heart but a here's a few:
Somewhere in Europe (Side a is Paris, b is Utrecht iirc)
Showroom Dummies (double LP, not sure about the title, it's a UK gig from 1975)
an LP with WDR recordings (amongst which both Kometenmelodies and Autobahn)
a double LP with 1975 US recordings.
and probably two more I forgot

Tips as to what's good? Should probably get them all, right? ;-)

willem et al have you all heard the Kraftneu! recordings? There's the legendary K4 bootleg, and apparently there's another one from St. Ingbert, '71

one year passes...

was thinking it would be funny to do a "Bohemian Rhapsody" style biopic of Jean-Michel Jarre. the only scene I have nailed down is Jarre buying Autobahn and hearing "Kometenmelodie 2" for the first time. his mind instantly rockets through the cosmos, like in the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey. you keep seeing him make the faces from the Vince McMahon gif. he wakes up drenched in sweat, comes downstairs and says "Dad...I don't want to take piano lessons anymore"

eleven months pass...

I had a dream about Kraftwerk last night. they did a show in Madison (?) and the setlist was:

Ruckzuck
Neon Lights
Supper's Ready
Electric Cafe - with 5 cats in wireframe suits. 4 of them ran away, the other one flopped on its belly and everyone said "awww"

then the curtains closed and I grabbed a beer out of a vending machine (?) which came with a shot of Fireball for 27 dollars. I used my wife's credit card.

the curtains lifted and some guy comes out and says "sorry ze robot is broken, we cannot play, Auf Wiedersehen." and everyone stood up and booed and threw pretzels
