there used to be one Goodwill here that had an unusually large collection of quality suits, some vintage, but I haven't checked to see if it's still around. we costumed about 50% of a production of 12 Angry Men from that store.

that said...they weren't typical Goodwill rack prices either.

an immediate red flag to me when people refer to suits and/or neckties as being horribly physically uncomfortable, as if they were whalebone corsets or something. i'm always amazed at how when i'm wearing a necktie there will sometimes be adult men who make comments like "man arent't you uncomfortable in that thing??" as if they are unaware that you tie it yourself and can control how tight it is.

Does he think that women wear cocktail dresses and heels because they’re comfortable?

I read that as “if she’s going to wear uncomfortable clothes, then I’m going to wear uncomfortable clothes”, not that he thinks cocktail dresses and heels are considered by women to be comfortable. Basically, he wants to match the dress style of his date even if he’d be perfectly happy to underdress if going by himself.

the new drip king (DJP), Monday, 11 December 2023 22:07 (four months ago) link

then I should rather dress uncomfortably in a suit cause convention dictates a cocktail dress matches with a suit?

That’s really not what was said.

sometimes they mean the shirt is tight but that in my experience means the fit wasn't done correctly

i used to wear a blazer w/no tie to my very dry office job but stopped abt 10 years ago after multiple times people approached me to offer condolences, assuming that i had to duck out of work for a funeral

At one former job whenever someone showed up in a blazer and/or a tie the joke was "Good luck in court!"

have never found suits any more or less comfortable than any other set of clothes, but guess this is something to do with having to wear a tie since I was four and a half

Adhering to dress code for weddings seems obvious to me— most recent weddings have included the following suggestions:
- Paris is Burning/cocktail attire, which meant basically lots of queer-coded formalwear.
- 70s psychedelia, a wedding on an enormous experimental marijuana farm in Vermont that had a barn rave which lasted until 5 in the morning
- Cape Cod casual, on Cape Cod

Even these more esoteric dress codes aren’t that hard to attain, imho, but I also own a white poplin suit so I am set for many summer weddings by default

Flashbacks to one job I had at a law firm where everyone - including behind the scene folks like IT - were required to dress “business professional” meaning suit & tie for all men. Learned all about sample sales, where movie studios offload production wardrobes, and how to ask a tailor for alterations but never want to go back to having to have a line item in my budget for dry cleaning.

At a different job I often wore blazers w/no tie which was good for “you look like a college professor” remarks

I first became aware of dieworkware guy when he tweeted boosting an ex-ILXoR as a paragon of style!

I was a little wary for obvious reasons (lots of his posts about e.g. Rishi Sunak looking terrible in suits being retweeted as if that was the problem with him) but less so after this:

I don't think clothes reflect anything about a person's character, capabilities, or moral worth. However, I write about men's clothing, and think that people will have a better relationship with their clothes if they learn what fits.

xp The last wedding I was at was my own 30 years ago, so I have no idea who wears what now.

I wear either black pants or a nice pair of jeans with a nice top, trouser socks, and ankle boots or a pair of closed-back clogs to work. The other companions wear t-shirts, shorts, and sandals, and the office people and case workers wear business casual.

How do you find a tie uncomfortable

It's constraining and awkward - and that could be as much about having the top button done as the tie itself. I assume I'd get used to it eventually but have no reason to do so, any more than a reason to train myself to not be bothered by the skin contact/tiny bit of weight for a watch.

papal hotwife (milo z), Tuesday, 12 December 2023 02:15 (four months ago) link

i'm not against ties, necessarily, but i find them super weird!

like, you have to wear this thing that can choke you, and you have to hide the part that goes around your neck (or be a pussy for wearing a clip-on.) why is it for the most part, the only colorful or patterned thing?

that said, strict bow-tie wearers are weird and somehow childish and it looks they have something missing from their chests. incredible to me that tucker carlson was a bow-tie guy (named tucker ffs!) and yet later, for a while, became the spokesman for Real American Men

anyway all my twitter ads are now for some magical radioactive particle-dispersing thing that removes snow from your car? (and they're all from different accounts, and therefore unblockable.) i don't even have a car

i love the workwear guy. i mostly am not a very "clothes" person but he's someone who loves what he loves, knows a lot about it, is articulate and funny in expressing his passion and is clearly not a fucking fascist. in 2023, on twitter, that's enough (and i hope he comes to bluesky/posts more on bluesky because i am mostly refraining from twitter now).

I wore one to school for at least nine years (idrc), and the only year I had to wear one in the workplace, after a decade-ish gap, I spent with a constant aggravating rash from the collar rubbing on a mole

I like the workwear guy fine but he claims knowledge of stuff where often its lacking and thus says things that are wrong. He had a whole thing about Aran sweaters not long ago and got into disputatious water for claiming that it is apocrypha with no historical evidence that they were knitted with unique patterns to aid the identification of decomposed bodies of fishermen lost at sea. I have little opinion on this but the advice (which is always one tweet away from 'try J Crew' that followed was terrible and he basically had no knowledge or seeming interest in contemporary knitwear, the production context of Aran sweaters now or offer any decent advice on how to get a good one. Not a crime but please don't be like *thread* 'Let's start by dispelling some myths...' if you're just writing up the same Lyst search anyone could do.

last year i had to go to my sisters wedding in ireland and me and my bf were very anxious to be low key and blend so we bought very minimal plain suits and then stood out like sore thumbs because all the men were dressed unbelievably ostentatiously in these weird fitted tweed suits that made them look like stuffed pheasants. this has apparently been the standard look for men at irish weddings for some time now and nobody thinks its weird.

Men* tend to wear excess weight in the neck, it's one of the reasons they have higher risk factors of apnea and crucially are the worse snorers.

*not sure if this is testosterone of what, facts may only apply to cis men.

Not to shift focus back to twitter, but it felt like yesterday was a breaking point for a lot of people. Anecdotally the exodus seems to be leading largely to Threads over the other alternatives, but I'm curious how it all shakes out.
