that ad is completely incomprehensible to me

seems like a lot of these free to play mobile games have found baffling ads to be effective, could see it you click on it cause you want to understand

lag∞n, Saturday, 2 December 2023 18:36 (five months ago) link

There's also a spate of mobile games whose adverts show gameplay that's not even in the games. Usually some sort of puzzle/mystery solving mechanic that looks like it could be fun but the game itself turns out to be a basic Match 3 clone 🤷‍♂️

these devious so and sos

It would be funny if it was a matching game but all the tiles were different feet

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Saturday, 2 December 2023 19:15 (five months ago) link

It's taken it a step further (that I've seen) into ads which are some pretend YouTube review channel sitting down to expose the game as one where the ad is impressive but the game play is match 3, and then finding to their amazement that it isn't (it:is)

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 2 December 2023 21:13 (five months ago) link

one of the funnest bits of recent Twitter is people putting "misleading information" tags under those adverts

Honnest Brish Face (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 December 2023 21:17 (five months ago) link

the ad i keep getting shows a ~55yo man with grey hair/beard, wearing a tailored suit, sitting at the beach (?) and looking at his phone. (he's kind of holding it oddly up in front of his face, probably because he needs bifocals.) the tagline is seeking.com: where successful men go to upgrade their relationships

joke's on them though; i'm not successful

All my Twitter ads are for weird "I AM A WIFE OF A LOVING HUSBAND WHO WILL KILL YOU IF CROSS ME" shirts and ornaments, all my Instagram ads are for churches/Israel.

Someone tried to doxx my Twitter account by sharing IP address. Probably a bot generating random IP numbers because it definitely wasn't mine (it was based in Hong Kong)

Reported it, was told doing that's a-ok! What a country

For a moment I thought Dilbert was advocating for Congress to be sold to China. Which is probably a more coherent idea than he usually has.

😞I am sadly closing my collection of animal table lamps. Been a passion project for years, but struggling to balance it with work. I've decided to put my dreams on hold and close up this collection.

How long will they let people keep putting community notes on the scam ads?

i've seen that same animal lamp ad with the same text 100x on instagram

I finally quite "X" the other day.

I don't know why I stuck around so long. Half of it was just having a random place to look at chatter/news and the other half were the music related accounts that are still there and posting.

But I just kept falling into the comments on political posts and obv "comments" everywhere are pretty bad, X was sinking to incredible new lows that were really depressing me.

I never responded or interracted, but I just had to kill the ability to fulfill the morbid urge to see what horrible people on X were discussing.

I looked at my own posts and saw just how little traction any of them every got. I never made a post and included like 16 hashtags to try to get attention. All I know is that I could share or repost something on X and get no traction, post the same thing on Facebook and kick off a lively discussion amongst interesting people.

Facebook obviously sucks too and I'd love to replace it, but my community there is very strong. What I hate the most is anyting suggested and the reels. the endless reels, which I never asked for but I can't help but to click on.

anyway, going to give blueksy more of a try.

It was really fun when you'd get a Bulgarian banquet hall or two card tables in Liberia in a shack with three walls, accompanied by images of actual local foods and people enjoying them. Then it would turn around and give you a KFC in Peoria or some gyros shop in Glasgow or something. Gyros everywhere. So much gyros in this world, and I love gyros, but wow. Sometimes almost certainly not a restaurant. Local health department? Telephone store? Just a picture of a blank wall?

Referring to Random Restaurant Bot, there. Point being, it was a good and worthwhile account that I always looked forward to reading.

nice of someone to port lag∞n's restaurant bot to bluesky, but if bsky becomes monetizable we have to come after this new guy

Absolutely why I had to stop using twitter, finally, as an act of self-care.

The first time I saw a body of a Palestinian is the first time I thought about quitting. Reading and collating matter on it (as I do with many things via twitter) as I have is enough.

Many people have not been as careful; they have seen a lot of videos. What the effects will be are not yet clear, and won't be for a while.

(This is more widely on social media not just twitter)

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Wednesday, 6 December 2023 16:14 (four months ago) link

yea that's definitely a problem for me too, a lot of the good folks on Twitter who hadn't left yet are posting about the Israel/Palestine conflict nonstop, and obviously that stuff is very important and needs to be exposed but it just depresses me so much to see it. I go on there for fun takes about LeBron James and videos from the Da Vinki twins, I don't really want to see the horrors of war alongside it

I'm not opposed to people posting thoughtfully about what's going on, but soon as you hit the comments it's gotten noticeable worse and more offensive.

I have curated my Twit/X thing well enough so that I don’t see much objectionable/disturbing stuff.

a very very unfair (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 6 December 2023 17:34 (four months ago) link

Have curated it carefully but I want to keep with the detail in the conflict, which has meant that some imagery you don't necessarily want to see slipping through.

Though it's not a big enough deal to switch off.

Many others have absorbed an insane amount of images.

yea I regret having spent so much time on there during Trump's presidency, just felt like Twitter specifically was really good at giving you a steady stream of bad news and terrifying opinion pieces which just wound up being really bad for my mental health. I remember something Chris Hayes said about it back then, the fact that Trump was in the news so much and was saying a new horrible thing every day was just bad for everybody, it's not really healthy for people to have that much politics in their lives

frogbs, Wednesday, 6 December 2023 17:49 (four months ago) link

lag∞n, Wednesday, 6 December 2023 17:50 (four months ago) link

I only signed up for Twitter around the time of the 2010 UK general election and it was good at helping me find new/interesting people, and establish a lot of new friendships, then between 2015-19 those friends became even more important. I am also forever thankful none of my immediate family found me or searched for me there.
