At least half a dozen marketing agencies said the brands they represent were standing firm against advertising on X, while others said they had advised advertisers to stop posting anything on the platform. Some temporary spending pauses that advertisers have enacted in recent weeks against X are likely to turn into permanent freezes, they added, with Mr. Musk’s comments giving them no incentive to return.Advertisers are “not coming back” to X, said Lou Paskalis, the founder and chief executive of AJL Advisory, a marketing consultancy. “There is no advertising value that would offset the reputational risk of going back on the platform.”

Gotta say, Musk complaining that advertisers leaving Twitter are killing Twitter gives me hope that Twitter can be killed, and that we can all at least indirectly play a role in its downfall.

tbh I had my doubts about this but lately I'm actually convinced that Twitter is dead, "X" may remain but it's rapidly going to morph into some hybrid of 8chan and Truth Social. of the 500+ accounts I follow, a third have just left, and a third just exclusively post about how much Twitter sucks now. those who are still business as usual are either bots or sports accounts, which have become more useless as the auto-updating gets worse and worse. its kind of a pain trying to look everyone up on Bluesky but imo worth it
― frogbs, Friday, 1 December 2023 20:35 (five months ago) link
What's funny about it is I really don't think Elon anticipated any of this. I know he wanted to make some radical changes but still thought the site would remain as active as always. I think he knew the "radical left" or whatever would be unhappy but that they'd ultimately stay on. He really thought he could strongarm the advertisers and keep the site running with 20% of the staff. He thought this because he's surrounded himself entirely with people who lick his boots 24/7. I'll miss the place but its kind of a beautiful thing to witness

Walmart has stopped advertising on X, telling Forbes it found alternate platforms to engage its customers, marking the first large company to depart from the platform after X owner and Tesla CEO Elon Musk made a string of disparaging comments toward advertisers leaving the platform in an interview with the New York Times on Wednesday.

There's also a spate of mobile games whose adverts show gameplay that's not even in the games. Usually some sort of puzzle/mystery solving mechanic that looks like it could be fun but the game itself turns out to be a basic Match 3 clone 🤷♂️

the ad i keep getting shows a ~55yo man with grey hair/beard, wearing a tailored suit, sitting at the beach (?) and looking at his phone. (he's kind of holding it oddly up in front of his face, probably because he needs bifocals.) the tagline is seeking.com: where successful men go to upgrade their relationships

I finally quite "X" the other day.
I don't know why I stuck around so long. Half of it was just having a random place to look at chatter/news and the other half were the music related accounts that are still there and posting.
But I just kept falling into the comments on political posts and obv "comments" everywhere are pretty bad, X was sinking to incredible new lows that were really depressing me.
I never responded or interracted, but I just had to kill the ability to fulfill the morbid urge to see what horrible people on X were discussing.
I looked at my own posts and saw just how little traction any of them every got. I never made a post and included like 16 hashtags to try to get attention. All I know is that I could share or repost something on X and get no traction, post the same thing on Facebook and kick off a lively discussion amongst interesting people.
Facebook obviously sucks too and I'd love to replace it, but my community there is very strong. What I hate the most is anyting suggested and the reels. the endless reels, which I never asked for but I can't help but to click on.
anyway, going to give blueksy more of a try.
