maybe but isn't it well documented that Tesla's "success" is based entirely on hype, speculation, and other borderline illegal tricks to keep the stock price up?
― frogbs, Wednesday, 25 October 2023 15:18 (six months ago) link
lol frogbs i was gonna say if banks stopped doing business with companies whose success is entirely that
well there probably would be less banks
― no gap tree for old men (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 25 October 2023 15:20 (six months ago) link
I mean it makes sense why they'd maybe invest in Tesla but idk seems pretty clear whatever Elon's "magic" was it wasn't based on actual smarts or business acumen and therefore it wasn't gonna work with Twitter, as predicted by pretty much everyone who wrote about the deal along with every ILX poster
― frogbs, Wednesday, 25 October 2023 15:25 (six months ago) link
i reckon most of us on ilx have been around long enough to have lived thru the historical evidence that the wisdom of banks is not all that
― no gap tree for old men (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 25 October 2023 15:26 (six months ago) link
fyi the banks aren't aiming to invest in tesla/twitter for these kinds of transactions, they're just middlemen - they buy the securities from the company then flip them on to investors. here they couldn't flip the twitter junk because it had rapidly degraded between the time they agreed to finance the buyout and the time they had to sell the junk, because elon proved to be a master at topping the market
the calculus was probably that the banks have made millions in doing tesla financings, elon up to that point had a good track record with companies, they put their faith in him, they trusted him...
― 龜, Wednesday, 25 October 2023 15:33 (six months ago) link
tbf that does sound like an investment, they just werent planning on holding very long, but... lol
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 25 October 2023 15:36 (six months ago) link
i mean yeah, that's why they're called underwriters - they're underwriting the risk - but usually banks don't commit unless they think it's close to risk-free...
*narrator voice* it was not risk-free
― 龜, Wednesday, 25 October 2023 15:37 (six months ago) link
thing about risk free is its generally also profit free

The Saudi investment probably isn't large enough to get him bonesawed, unfortunately.
― papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 25 October 2023 15:46 (six months ago) link
fun fact - the saudis own 60% of lucid
― 龜, Wednesday, 25 October 2023 15:47 (six months ago) link
saudis dont care if their investments make money its a political influence project
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 25 October 2023 15:56 (six months ago) link
yeah the saudi money is just insane. I kind of wonder if some of the weird stuff from SV VCs right now is due to the saudis directly investing and not going through their funds? I thought I read something about that but I might be mistaken

vcs are like im going to give you one million dollars and i want three board seats and please cc me on all communications, then the saudis or softbank walk through the door with $100m and go call us if you need more

peter thiel becoming an fbi informantmarc andreesen one-upping his previous bullshit by posting a screen inspired nearly entirely on tweets he read coupled with the pronouncement they're going to invest in things that are more likely to become defense department contractors
― ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 25 October 2023 17:38 (six months ago) link
my theory is that thiel specifically was angry he wasn't getting the deals so he's trying to claim all his moneybag competitors are foreign agents
andreesen is just perpetually pissy, I guess

For those without Bluesky, you have to turn off audio/video messaging manually in Twitter settings if you don't want robocalls or whatever.

I never updated the Twitter app because I wanted to see how long it took for it to become unusable due to obsolescence (it’s still working 3 months in btw) and I don’t see this option at all

If you don't update soon Elon Musk will hire a gang of blue checks to come over to your house and robocall you in person.

Am I meant to know or care who that guy is?
BTW - that tweet, here on this thread, is a perfect example of what someone was pointing out on the anti-semitic thread (Felicity I think?) re, lacking context. Its something I've always hated about ILX, but this is the actual Twitter thread so I guess I cant kvetch here.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 26 October 2023 00:44 (six months ago) link
The context is "holy fuck, look at this fucking mutant." It's an example of the kind of brain poisoning that simply didn't exist pre-Twitter: like, aside from your family and maybe your neighbors, who needs to know that you cheated on your wife and are now getting divorced? But apparently he thinks the whole world needs to know, and he thought including both his soon-to-be-ex-wife and his new girlfriend in the tweet was the correct move, from a performance standpoint. It's stunning in its insanity.
― read-only (unperson), Thursday, 26 October 2023 00:51 (six months ago) link
And in answer to your question, no, you're not meant to know or care who he is. I certainly had no idea who he was when I saw that tweet and laughed out loud at the sheer "look-at-me"-ism of it.

Weird, I didn’t even know Snapchat was a thing, I thought it was functionally replaced by TikTok.
― papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 26 October 2023 02:45 (six months ago) link
snapchat is more of a messaging thing it does have social features but i think people use it a lot just between friends, where tikitok is more about watching lil movies strangers put up

I think tweets without context or having to click through to read a thread kind of suck but that particular one, it’s someone summarizing the situation referenced in the screenshot and basically explaining why it’s funny? crypto man publicly admitting his affair and divorce

― deep wubs and tribral rhythms (Boring, Maryland), Thursday, 26 October 2023 12:57 (six months ago) link
^^Bad press and different states banning/limiting use by employees probably contributed, along with other users trying it out and not really succeeding with views and/or getting the hang of posting, so they drop out.
