I wish I could be of more help on the flats issue but I never wear them due to A) really, really high arches making many, many flats excruciating to wear (I guess I could get ortho inserts but UGH) B) really, really huge feet looking like clown's feet when in flats:(

yeah, i don't wear true flats either - shoes of pain for the high-arched, ttly. there are flats that aren't truely flat, but they're harder to find, it seems. regardless, you mostly just need Comfortable Shoes, archels! cute and comfortable.

i really love those black shoes you posted, nath. though, yeah, i'd wobble on that heel.

ohgod, i am going to walk downtown this afternoon and this thread just had to pop up... this is why i shouldn't have a credit card.

did not buy shoes, phew. mostly because all the ones i felt want for were $300+ camper boots. oh, but there was a flimsy pair of weird looking canvas slips that were cheap but not cheap enough for what they were. cute though...

I really like these but can't afford ($300, chie mihara), also I saw them @ anthropologie website and am rather opposed to buying anything they like

those are great! (i would like them better if the cream part was blue or green or red though.)

Surprised at lack of sneakerheads here. Contemplating Alden shell cordovans, but I've already spent more than I should on clothing lately. Not that this is likely to stop me..

Ally's shoes seem like a fake Louboutin with the red.

I'm anxious for cool weather so I can buy new tall boots.

Archel, I have these - extremely comfy and not too pricey (for 100% leather shoes). Also available in Fuchsia suede, electric blue suede, grey suede and black leather.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 14:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Darla, those are very, very awesome. I think the wide straps might be bad for me proportionally but I covet.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 14:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Ah boots, they are omnipresent in the shops. EVERYfuckingWHERE. I wouldn't be surprised that butchers will be selling'em: straight from the cow.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 14:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I've yet to see any in the sales papers or out in the wild. soon though, soon.

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 14:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm such a tenderfoot. I have some black shoes that I really like, but they have labels sewn in right under my heel, and the heavy-duty thread hurts after a lot of walking.

The Bearnaise-Stain Bears (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 14:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Tack a bit of moleskin overtop of the labels, silly. It's sticky on the back, just trim with scissors ET VIOLA.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 15:06 (seventeen years ago) link

ooh, that Dune shoes site has fantastic dark grey patent flats. I guess they don't ship to USA though! damn

this is because we are not in europe/uk :( so. many. good. shoes. and the turnover! and different kinds of stuff. i sometimes feel like i've seen the same general styles here for years, blah.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 15:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes I like those Dune shoes Madchen, thanks!

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 15:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Am I the only bloke who bumps this?

I believe Mark C has been known to get shoey gooey on occasion too.

Hi!

I do read this thread, not quite with my tongue hanging out (though Daria's shoes are pretty special). I wish there were more suggestions from chaps, though, because the shoe-buying cravings are back with a vengeance but I want something different - walkable-in, stylish, grown-up but casual. Any suggestions?

=== temporary username === (Mark C), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:23 (seventeen years ago) link

One of my brain cells accidentally bumped into the other one and it occurred to me to snip the hurty labels out of my shoes, DOYYYYYY.

omg, that barefoottess site (daria's upthread) is pretty awesome. here are some other chie mihara shoes that are beautiful - the blue stuff at the toe is embroidered! pretty. want. but in dif colour b/c i r not a beige/tan person really. well, maybe.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:42 (seventeen years ago) link

although the current rounded toe thing is worlds better than it's evil predecessor, the pointy make yr foot look freakishly long, it has a kinda contrived nostalgia that doesn't quite do it for me.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 17:13 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, i understand that for sure. but i think it really depends on the outfit. what you pair with those shoes will increase/decrease nostalgia levels.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 17:18 (seventeen years ago) link

I was just about to post the exact same joke I made almost 3 years ago.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 17:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Wait -- if pointy is out, and rounded is out, that only leaves oblique and square! Which are BOTH more contrived than rounded (although maybe not more than stiletto-pointed). :D

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 17:20 (seventeen years ago) link

haha, oblique shoes - yeah, you could wear me, maybe, if you feel like it, and you might not, but that reminds me of this story about my friend, well, not my friend but a friend of friend, anyway, it's a pretty good story, i mean, it made me laugh at the time, where was i when he told it? i think it was in that cafe, you know the one, the one with the thing on the sign, it's orange, what is it a chicken? no, i think it's a duck, yeah, it's not in my neighbourhood, that's why i don't really remember, i don't go there often, i prefer the cafe down the block, have i taken you there yet? we should go.

I'd chime in, but I haven't bought any casual footwear since January. However, if anyone's in the West End over the next few, I'm trying to decide on a pair to blow my mismanaged budget on right now.

I see a lot of foppish dudes are into Swear and Buddhahood and all that other jazz Office shoppers go for - think that might help?

As I mentioned 2 years ago (!), I have these:

in purple and white leather. And I've NEVER worn them. Where could I easily offload them, preferably in exchange for money (eBay aside, which doesn't usually salivate over them, last I looked)?

current impractical unnecessary shoes that I covet:

horseshoe (horseshoe), Friday, 10 November 2006 18:46 (seventeen years ago) link

they don't look that impractical.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Friday, 10 November 2006 18:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I guess, just impractical because winter's approaching and I should be thinking about boots.

but you're totally right! a sensible heel=I should get them.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 November 2006 19:06 (seventeen years ago) link

cute!

I am looking at boots right now, and want some kind of buckle detail like that.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Friday, 10 November 2006 19:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Better than cute, they are supa tough.

I really want the boots Madchen posted upthread:

i bought these three months ago on a whim...

http://www.rawshoe.co.uk/Shoe%20Images/Macbeth/Eliot%20Chocolate.jpg

and they're already fucked. vegan schmegan.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 10 November 2006 19:59 (seventeen years ago) link

those are tough boots, laurels! brown suede boots above not so tough, but cute for sure. i like the buttons up the side a lot. i want tall lace-up boots even though they are a pain.

i am all into heels lately - i like the ones you posted, horseshoe! i've been coveting the ysl big weird heeled ones and knock-offs of (though not in gold). but yeah, winter in this city as a pedestrian/public-transit user = no heels. ah well.

nice!

cons are also vegan though

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Friday, 10 November 2006 20:04 (seventeen years ago) link

and a lot of other shoes like that. regardless, they tend not to last long with constant wear anyway.
