why yes I do have the “best cd ripping drives ever” in a box in my basement and have considered a modern pci->legacy pci->scsi card from late 90s chain to get them back online

which musical notation, and what about jazz

these are important questions and must be answered in due course, but they can wait until we've addressed which animal skins we should use

Yeah, you can "read" binary easily enough but given it can be used to be encoding ANYT SORT OF INFORMATION AT ALL in ANY SORT OF ARBITRARY WAY you're not going to just interpret it easily at all. Whereas musical notation gives you some pretty obvious clues to start with (physically higher notes being higher, etc)

some other civilization from well beyond our galaxy find a single binary data stream in our burnt husk of a solar system billions of years from now and it turns out some Elon type of guy encoded the “all your base” meme into a stream of sequential rocks orbiting the one remaining gravitational mass

Civilization will be reduced to that Kevin James meme/pic and nothing more.

in college i did a film course where i shot on tri-x film, transferred to beta, edited on a computer (OS 8 iirc), then output to VHS for playback

i don’t know where any of that stuff is obv but i imagine the VHS tape would be barely viewable now

uh guys can you post more on X please? I'm locking the doors now so you'll post more. No, I won't open them if you post more, you just have to get used to posting more. Forget you had another life once.

Interesting.

Our algorithm tries to optimize time spent on X, so links don’t get as much attention, because there is less time spent if people click away.

Best thing is to post content in long form on this platform.

never gave too much creedence to the theory that Elon is tanking Twitter on purpose but this move is so blatantly dumb that I'm starting to wonder

frogbs, Thursday, 5 October 2023 14:53 (seven months ago) link

i think that hes tanking twitter in that he has an ideological project thats not aligned with making good business decisions, and then also his pure business decisions are very bad too, but i dont think hes thinking "haha im destroying twitter" i think hes thinking "im creating the twitter i want and obviously everyone else will like it too because im the best guy in the world"

lag∞n, Thursday, 5 October 2023 14:56 (seven months ago) link

reading Elon's tweet and lag∞n's post makes me think:

right I mean I've said this before but Elon's lived the last two decades of his life getting to do everything he wants at all times and is constantly receiving credit for things he had nothing to do with, not only that but he actively removes everyone from his life who criticizes him in the slightest, and I think having a long period of that being your reality for so long actually does physically change your brain to the point where you've got more in common with lizard than man

frogbs, Thursday, 5 October 2023 15:43 (seven months ago) link

entirely untrue and unnecessary lizard slander tbh

shd be noted too that tanking twitter is bad for him beyond all the money hes lighting on fire, most of the current valuation of his business is based on the idea that hes a singular genius, publicly demonstrating that hes not in fact a genius threatens that situation

no gap tree for old men (Noodle Vague), Friday, 6 October 2023 14:21 (six months ago) link

Seems almost certain that Musk tweets this shit out on a whim and then whoever's left at Twitter has to try & find a way to make it work.

groovypanda, Friday, 6 October 2023 15:51 (six months ago) link

He has some thing now about wanting to make people click into the tweets--like he's going to hide the likes and comments numbers inside--I guess because if you do then you're more likely to read the comments and get mad and reply and etc.

does anyone really care how many likes some tweet got, feel like it works the other way around if you see a tweet has a ton of interactions then maybe you look at the comments

How far do I have to scroll to see the bootlickers? I've gone through maybe 50 replies and found a sole "X is getting better day by day" as the only positive one and even that might be sarcastic.

Twitter / X is serving users with a new ad format that can't be blocked or reported

the ads aren't even actual X posts & aren't connected to any X accounts. they do not disclose that they are ads

it appears the ads are connected to clickbait ad networks https://t.co/5BbxToARIg pic.twitter.com/aSoUfiSMV6

― lag∞n, Friday, October 6, 2023 5:25 PM (four hours ago) bookmarkflaglink

Who knows the intent but it seems like one thing this would do hide how few interactions a lot of the blue-check posts they're boosting actually have. I think it's true people are more likely to click on things that already have a lot of engagement, so hiding the numbers on the blue-check posts could theoretically help them get more engagement by making it less obvious what losers they are? Anyway, that plus the ad thing feels like an effort to turn Twitter from something more like a tool you could use into a stream of passive content forced on you regardless of your interest. (With the caveat that you can always just quit, of course.)

look there's a dopamine rush associated with getting a ton of likes and RTs making that shit not matter is just gonna further disincentivize users from actually trying to make good shit. i mean like it or not the gamification is sorta central to the platform

frogbs, Friday, 6 October 2023 22:18 (six months ago) link

It is, he's just trying to rig the rules of the gamification to favor his trolls. But it won't work because nobody likes them.
