Is Ken Burns not well known outside the US?

Is his face really that well known in the US?

I thought he was great in Harold & Maude.

xpost Do they know it as "the Ken Burns effect"?

ā€• Josh in Chicago, Friday, September 22, 2023 12:50 PM (thirteen minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

yes because https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Burns_effect#Use_by_Apple.

i don't actually know if more people know the name of the effect than know who ken burns is. both numbers are pretty close to zero in the UK.

I know Ken Burns' films, there is a (fre-to-air) PBS channel over here which shows them pretty much in a loop. No idea what the guy looks like though.

Yeah, I guess it makes sense that his face may not be recognizable; unlike, say, David Attenborough or something, he's not in his docs. I realize his stuff is mostly focused on American history and culture, but his brand is so high profile here I guess I assumed his name would be at least a little familiar in passing elsewhere.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 22 September 2023 17:40 (seven months ago) link

I had to look up the pic to see that it was Ken Burns. I knew the other two assholes, obvs.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 22 September 2023 17:43 (seven months ago) link

it's not just that he focuses on american history and culture. people all over are interested in that. it's that he focuses on it in precisely the way that makes it appropriate to invite him to a koch brothers retreat. the overseas market for that is not huge.

I doubt I'm the first to say this, but young Ryan Gosling looks eerily like young Macaulay Culkin.

Ken Burns is pretty well known in the UK if you like Serious Telly - I watched the Civil War with my parents as a teenager, and the BBC have fairly recently shown the country music and vietnam series. Iā€™d never recognise his face though.

Madchen, Friday, 22 September 2023 21:16 (seven months ago) link

"Serious Telly" is the best phrase I've heard all day.
