thought i was done but ended up working on it a bit longer. as i was finishing up, a chess timer i ordered in the mail arrived. i'm going to start clocking in when i'm actually holding my brush and standing and painting, and working, and turning it off when i wander off or make tea or just stare distantly like a mule.

haha, yeah definitely! i need to start using it for other activities too -- it's amazing how often things, for me at least, come down to just focusing and paying attention, or not. distraction is the mindkiller, and yet, *wanders off*

fingers crossed but i might be selling that last painting (last 3 sales have fallen through so i'm just jinxing myself again)

all ten of my fingers are crossed now, though, so 5 different crossings of 2. i've finally woken up from my yearslong slumber and started applying to things for the first time - a couple contests/juried exhibitions, a gallery, and an upcoming residency. plus, i managed to go out and see an opening at a "real" gallery on friday, to see a local artist i really like that's managed to make a living out of it. i introduced myself and he offered me (fingers crossed) a spot in an exhibition at his space in a couple months!

what's hilarious is that all of this is hitting right as my savings hits $0, like, exactly after working my ass off and going through my life savings trying to become better for the last 2+ years. i know i need to get a source of steady income, even if it's just taking tickets at the art center, but i'm also filled up to the brim with music and art activities and obligations right now, in the very best way. never really understood wanting there to be more hours in a day, until very recently

anyway, that might be oversharing, sorry, but i figure anyone still reading this thread might be interested in hearing about some irl progress. i also made made this timelapse (not really a timelapse - more just taking a quick pic after significant changes) of the last painting. i had to make it tiny and reduce the quality to get it down to a reasonable filesize, shades of 2009 internet

4th and final post in a row, sorry, but what's hilarious is that it took me about a week straight of painting to finally realize that the hand on the left was ENORMOUS, like way the fuck too big. i didn't use a model or a pictorial reference (although it very much resembles reagan on the front of perlstein's Invisible Bridge hardcover), and apparently my idea of a hand is just to make them cartoonishly large. i finally realized, on the second to last day of painting, that making it a normal size would improve things. kinda miss that giant hand though :D

strangely, music is taking up a lot more time too! there's hardly time to paint because of music practices, and then...i'm out of money. so i'm in the middle of a job application right now. in the end, i was able to go almost 2.5 years without working a job, completely obliterating my savings. After rent on the first i am down to about $200 in my bank account! but I have boxes of records to sell, a part-time job taking tickets coming in January, and I've had some luck in selling some recent paintings and still have a kindling of hope that I can make it that way some day. i had money, i have zero money, i have zero regrets, i would do it again in the exact same way if it led me here

thank you! it's for a music release later this week (a couple songs on bandcamp thing for a new project called orange foods), a goauche+pen on paper automatic writing experiment (aka i just closed my eyes and drew curving lines with a pen for a few minutes; it's hard to tell but there are really faint pen lines in there, under the gouache). the digital part is from an ascii text generator, then stretched, doubled, color shifted, etc

i heavily respect that ilx still supports gifs, and as a gesture in the direction of 1.0 practice i have reduced the file size of this 105-frame gif by turning dither way the hell down and lossy way the hell up, then cutting the dimensions to less than 10% of their original, all in the name of getting it down to 3 MB

in other news i have a job interview for really cool position, a part-time thing but well compensated and interesting work. if i can get it i think i could finally stabilize my financial situation (cut to video of a plane nosediving for 14,000 terrible feet before just barely pulling up before smashing into a lake), which would be very important right now! interview is on tuesday *sweats*

i have a painting from last year that didn't sell and i don't particularly like it, so happy to paint over it! it was and i guess will still be my largest one, 70"x40"

thank you! i've let it dry for a few days (so still pretty wet) so i can rework some areas more easily. it's been a while since i worked on something so large, i had forgotten how long it takes! but i'm so glad i painted over the old monster. my living room already feels much better lol

oh thanks, appreciate it! the collage stuff feels like a goof right now but that's part of the fun of it, it's very low stakes. my partner's very into collage to we do it all the time, it's been a great new genre for the nu-era! :)
