That (original post) picture is too good to be true.

You know, sports seems to be the only field where "tough" men can exhibit physical signs of affection towards each other without being labeled gay, so do you have to ruin that too? Two guys hugging does not a gay make.

Two guys hugging does not a gay make.

It might an unintentionally homoerotic picture make, though.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 06:25 (eighteen years ago) link

And anyway, that first picture has THREE guys hugging.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 06:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Is a pic of two guys hugging necessarily homoerotic? Is physical warmth between guys always erotic, thogh maybe only unintentionally? I'd like to think not.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 07:04 (eighteen years ago) link

It's not the hugging: it's the O faces.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 07:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, not all of the guys on this thread are showing that.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 07:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Besides, if you'd just scored a goal or something, you'd be showing those kinda faces too.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 07:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes, but that's the point: when seen out of context (i.e. if you forget that this is merely same-gender goal-related celebratory huggery) these images look amusing.

Now stop reading "unintentionally homoerotic imagery" as "pictures of homosexuals" because that's not the point.

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 07:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Joking, Tuomas, joking. Serious answer: the humour lies in the cognitive dissonance between the traditionally macho (homophobic) attitudes of professional athletes and the unintentionally sexualised content of the pictures. Also: arse-grabbing.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 07:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Man, I sound angry. I'm not, you know. I'm just sayin' that there's no need to turn this into an issue that isn't one or be offended by something that isn't there.

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 07:45 (eighteen years ago) link

The football one up there is like a giant Katamari!

Well, no one said anything about "out of context". It's quite clear from almost all these pics what the context is.

I'm only being half-serious here, obviously this is a fun thread and I don't want to spoil it. But I do think it's worth giving a thought why guys can't show affection towards each other, even as a part of a sports game, without it being "unintentionally homoerotic".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 08:39 (eighteen years ago) link

What is needed here is the distinction between the homosocial and the homosexual- Eve kosofsky Sedgwick defined the homosocial as the "affective glue" that bonds together contexts of same-sex intimacy which are understood to be non-sexual . . . it's a useful notion and helps explain locker rooms, golf clubs, sports bro behaviour in relation to the simultaneously homophobic party line *and* homoerotic charge that is often going on in such contexts.

Tuomas, any male/male (or female/female) intimacy can of course be viewed as homoerotic if the viewer wants to view it that way (and even full-on buttfuckery can be seen as "simply homosocial" if the viewer is in complete denial). But you're describing this as if we're ruining something by declaring it homoerotic -- "why can't they do this without this terrible label being thrust upon them".

I love that last one. What is going on there, really? Is someone taking a penalty kick from extremely close? Even so...

i love how epic disappointment writ in the bodies of the players is some kind of staple of futbol on every narrow miss. baseball and basketball and u.s. football guys are more demonstrative than they used to be, but disappointment is weathered either with passive stoicism or by throwing a chair across the dugout.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 01:15 (eighteen years ago) link

it has not been so long, in the evolution of american sports, since so much was made of joe dimaggio, late in a world series game his team was losing, kicking at the dirt in disappointment as he followed a george stirnweiss walk and a yogi berra single with what seemed a sure extra-base hit that was snatched out of the sky by, google tells me, dodgers reserve outfielder al gionfriddo (who had been put in expressly to handle whatever dimaggio could hit at him)

howell huser (chaki), Sunday, 18 December 2005 21:36 (eighteen years ago) link

The photoshopped one is what made me realize how much of the funny here is in how the camera angles and the exact second of photography wind up making it all look like something else, like way beyond what's actually going on; probably if you watched the stuff in real time, from different angles, it would seem totally normal. (And probably if you photographed the hell out of some other activity you'd get some of the same stuff.)

That wrestling pic is still gold, though. And I have to say, a lot of those baseball players are giving one another some super-intense looks, like the kind of deep intimate looks that in normal life really usually are followed by making out.
