It’s great that I haven’t heard of two of those people but I’m comfortable assuming they’re dumbasses by proximity.

I was curious:

In the book, Perry, a columnist at the New Statesman,[3] compares liberal feminists surrounding sex to capitalism.[3] Perry argues that effective means of contraception has benefited men by representing sex as a recreational activity.[2] Perry explores the abuse of women who produce pornography, arguing the notion of consent can mask harms and the association between pornography and violent sexual behaviour.[4] Considering men, Perry notes the temporal correlation between erectile dysfunction and the use of pornography.[4]

Perry draws upon her experience of working in a rape crisis centre to argue that liberal feminism minimises the sex differences, resulting in an unwillingness to consider what women can do to reduce the risk of sexual assault in a desire to avoid victim blaming.[2] Perry argues that conceptions about rape being motivated by the desire for power may be incorrect and may be motivated by a desire for sexual gratification.[5] Perry argues the sex-positive movement requires women to not comment on certain sexual behaviours such as kinks, sex work, and engage in sexual behaviour like men.[2] Perry expresses alarm at the sexual practice of choking, noting an increase in the practice and concern regarding the rough sex murder defense.[4]

In 2013 Haider and Muhammad Syed co-founded Ex-Muslims of North America (EXMNA), an advocacy organization and online community which aims to normalize religious dissent and to helping create local support communities for those who have left Islam.[6] The organization was first based in just Washington, DC, and Toronto, but is now active in over 25 locations in the United States and Canada.[1]

EXMNA believes Muslim communities often shun those who are accused of apostasy as well as their families and that fear of excommunication and violence makes it dangerous for closeted ex-Muslims if they are exposed as disbelievers.[10] They have stated that Islamic "apostates live with a level of threat that influences every aspect of life," because when someone leaves the faith they often lose their community and social support including their mosque, their friends, and even potentially their family. This is the reason why EXMNA believes that it is very important to normalize dissent in religious communities and why they have created a network of social support for those who chose to leave Islam.[11][12] Due to the fear of apostates being "outed," EXMNA has a lengthy screening process to ensure the security and safety of EXMNA members.[11]

In 2015 she gave a speech called "Islam and the Necessity of Liberal Critique" at the American Humanist Association's 74th annual conference in Denver, Colorado, that has been widely viewed since uploaded to YouTube. During an interview with Dave Rubin she said she was nervous to deliver the speech, believing the topic of Islam and dissent to be "sensitive", yet was delighted at how well the speech was received.[7] Haider, a self-described liberal, is disheartened by what she feels is a hostile attitude towards Ex-Muslims by her fellow liberals. She has said women who leave Islam often "face ostracism, beatings, harassment and threats from their families and communities, forced travel back to home countries to pry them free of Western influence, and forced marriage," and therefore should be among the most welcomed by the liberal community. However, she feels that she and other Ex-Muslims are shunned by the left, having been called an Islamophobe. Haider has stated that this makes the position of Ex-Muslim atheists precarious because "the political right is not our friend. We don't have allies on the right due to our atheism," but at the same time she feels Ex-Muslims also have very few allies on the left.[3]

In 2017 Haider decided to take EXMNA on a tour around the United States and Canada to speak at college campuses throughout the 2017–2018 academic year. EXMNA spoke on a variety of topics that affect Muslims and ex-Muslims.[1]

i do think she’s riding some post-trump social-energy shift where some people are somehow able to use their incessant idiocy as a source of power; Elons repeated faceplants at twitter and the attendant mockery cresting a feedback loop of motivation to be even more annoying; I feel that Eric Adams has a similar energy. I guess it’s just shamelessness but it seems sort of a case of difference in degree being so complete that it becomes a difference of kind. it’s like the inverse of modern toxic fan culture

I say this because she seems to be adept at the “flood the zone with shit” rhetorical technique that the above mentioned also use; I was expecting the revive to be about this but there’s all sorts of other stupid things to consider now:

I love Lizzo. Not saying I don't believe ppl when bad things happen, but I had dancers mistreated on my watch in ways I didn't find out about until way later. Mebe shit is bad. But loyalty matters to me. Lizzo was kind to me and others for a decade before she was "cool", and…

Grimes weirdly seems like someone who doesn't want to rock the boat with anyone or offend people while she says these insane things, or she thinks they're amazing ideas that couldn't possibly be offensive.

The full excerpt gets even worse

"Every now and then, often at the most complex of times, the Creators of Our Simulation—those rascals who conjure up what we are led to believe is reality—drop in a sparky new element, one that creates chaotic new subplots. And thus into Musk’s life in the spring of 2018, amid the emotional tsunami caused by his breakup with Amber Heard, came a waiflike weaver of sounds, Claire Boucher, known as Grimes, a smart and spellbinding performance artist whose appearance would lead to new children, on-and-off domesticity, and even a public battle with an unhinged rapper.
Born in Vancouver, Grimes had produced four albums by the time she started dating Musk. Drawing on science fiction themes and memes, her mesmerizing music combined sonic texture with elements of dream pop and electronica. She had an adventuresome curiosity that led her to become interested in eclectic ideas, such as a thought experiment known as Roko’s basilisk, which posits that artificial intelligence could get out of control and torture any human who had not helped it gain power. These are the types of things that she and Musk worry about. When Musk wanted to tweet a pun about it, he Google-searched to find an image, and he discovered that Grimes had made it an element of her 2015 music video “Flesh without Blood.” She and Musk got into a Twitter exchange that led, in the modern way, to direct-messaging and texting.
They had met before and, ironically, it was when Musk was in an elevator with Amber Heard. “Remember that elevator meeting?” Grimes asked during a late-night conversation I had with her and Musk. “I mean that was super weird.”
“Of all the times to meet,” Musk agreed. “You were staring at me very intensely.”
“No,” she corrected, “you were the one giving me a weird stare.”
After they met again through the Roko’s basilisk exchange on Twitter, Musk invited her to fly up to Fremont to visit his factory, his idea of a good date. “We just walked the floor all night, and I watched him try to fix things,” Grimes says. The next night, while driving her to a restaurant, he showed how fast the car accelerated, then took his hands off the wheel, covered his eyes, and let her experience Autopilot. “I was like, oh shit, this guy is fucking crazy,” she says. “The car was signaling and changing lanes by itself. It felt like a scene out of a Marvel movie.” At the restaurant, he carved “EM+CB” on the wall.
When she compared his powers to those of Gandalf, he gave her a rapid-fire trivia test on Lord of the Rings. He wanted to see whether she was truly a faithful fan. She passed. “That mattered to me,” Musk says. As a gift, she gave him a box of animal bones she had collected. In the evenings, they listened to Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History and other history podcasts and audiobooks. “The only way I could be in a serious relationship is if the person I’m dating can also listen to an hour of, like, war history before bed,” she says.

one month passes...

From the excerpts from Musk’s book I’ve read she comes across as so unlikable, also this laughable lie: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-10602259/amp/Grimes-reveals-Elon-Musk-lived-insecure-40-000-house.html gets crushed by the biographer describing their mansion with a house staff of which Claire was “distrustful and demanding”.

I got challenged in this thread back in 2018 because I guess I was one of her first ex-fans in here to start seeing thru her bullshit, but her latest passive agressive burn-delete tweet against that other Musk breeding vessel, Shivon, was still so disappointing and somewhat sad.

I need to stop following whatever’s going on with her, at this point I don’t think she’ll ever do or say anything that makes me say “oh that’s cool” anymore.

Okay, another thought about potentially why Grimes is good but I can't invest myself fully - she's a popular kid masquerading as a weirdo, and that makes real weirdos feel even more alienated from society at large (I am a real weirdo).

sean gramophone, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 12:44 (seven months ago) link

I mean of course she is weird and so is her on-off manpig blob, but there’s a great amount of calculation of her “character”. She herself keeps calling Grimes a character, she gets to choose which shallow thing is part of the act.

I’m aware this will sound like I’m a gatekeeper but Elon and herself call themselves massive sci-fi/fantasy geeks and all they ever reference is idk massively popular things like Game of Thrones, LOTR, DUNE or some fantasy/sci fi playstation game. So many things she says have always sounded fake to me. Like “look at how kooky and random I am!”

With artists like say Kate Bush or Bjork - per example - the weird feels genuine and not just part of an act. That is just how they really are. And in turn it doesn’t feel pathetic when they go past their 40’s and are still behaving somewhat childlike and eccentric. They are just wired like that and it’s attractive.

imago, Wednesday, 20 September 2023 13:38 (seven months ago) link

Everything about her just screams tourist to me. There’s nothing inherently bad about being a tourist, but there’s artists like say David Bowie that made his tourism something artistic and worthwhile for the most part. She has just being doing cryptofascist bullshit tourism.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 20 September 2023 13:45 (seven months ago) link

David Bowie’s fascist tourism didn’t last for 6+ years and we got Station to Station out of it. With her we’ve got… an nft collection.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 20 September 2023 13:49 (seven months ago) link

i have a contrasting view: she is genuinely and deeply interested in these things, but was acclaimed so early (and so much) for her work that she thinks it is enough to skim and riff on these topics; she doesn't recognize that great work relies on deep reflection, investment and original invention using canon as a stepping-off point.

it's like someone who gets famous for the first painting they ever throw together; they could be led to think that great paintings are made casually, almost unthinkingly, just so long as one is genius enough (as they believe they are)
