IIRC the number one rule for any internet rebranding is 'make it impossible to Google'

Why Rashomoff? Rashomon! (Old Lunch), Monday, 24 July 2023 11:23 (nine months ago) link

No need to Google something if it will connect us all in ways we’re just beginning to imagine.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 24 July 2023 11:41 (nine months ago) link

It has come to my attention that the person who submitted this logo to Elon Musk may have not acquired the proper license to use Special Alphabets 4 in a logo for a website with a large userbase. pic.twitter.com/7sFuexEqg5

I don't think I've seen it mentioned here so far but (related to Google) there's only so many companies that get to become a verb and it's quite something to see someone intentionally take an axe to one of them.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 24 July 2023 11:46 (nine months ago) link

Are people sending Xs now?

Lots of takes on where this shit comes from.

Love to change my business logo to something that can’t be trademarked which means anyone can legally use it for whatever they want https://t.co/IDbSx5k8ag

This thread is now reading like a late 60s new wave SF novel set in, er, the mid-2020s. Maybe Thomas Disch was onto something?

The Fifth Roommate (Matt #2), Monday, 24 July 2023 12:06 (nine months ago) link

changing your website name to X is possibly the most edgy-14-year-old-boy thing he's done so far, and that’s really saying something

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 24 July 2023 12:17 (nine months ago) link

TBH reading about it itt I honestly thought this was just another 'coked out of his mind @ 3 AM' idea Musk pulled out of his ass with no intention of ever following through on. But wow, look at that, kudos.

Someone (a lot of someones) should tell him to stop fucking around and just change the site to x.xxx already

X sounds gloomy and dystopian. the promo video he posted for x even includes this sinister static effect. just the dumbest branding change ever. the bird logo and the name "twitter" were the best things about the "hell site."

Heh, Mr. X.

Up until recently reverse DNS records from Elon Musk's x[.]com pinged from an IP in Khabarovsk, Russia.

Connected to these records are a Chinese national known for his development of lithium ion batteries, and a company with servers in Russia called Fishnet Communications. pic.twitter.com/R6yKFaKW0r

Elon "Graphic Design Is My Passion" Musk's logo for "X" is literally just Unicode Character “𝕏” (U+1D54F).

love the armchair designers and typographers crawling out of the woodwork here. "literally just Unicode Character “𝕏”" -- ok in what typeface ("font") would that unicode codepoint be rendered? as i type this right now, 𝕏 is being rendered in a sans-serif font that looks nothing like the new logo.

afaik typefaces are intellectual property so one cannot legally use it for whatever they want. also i joked earlier that it looks like the X11 and XE logo but it also kinda looks like the old xerox logo too. there's definitely precedent for simple, single letter trademarks

Hooboy

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/24/technology/twitter-x-elon-musk.html

The tech billionaire, who bought Twitter last year, renamed the social platform X.com on its website and started replacing the bird logo with a stylized version of the 24th letter of the Latin alphabet. Inside Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco, X logos were projected in the cafeteria, while conference rooms were renamed to words with X in them, including “eXposure,” “eXult” and “s3Xy,” according to photos seen by The New York Times.

This feels like a hamfisted attempt evade a prophecy by loophole. "The third great Antichrist shall ruin a company named the name of twitter."

strike "the name of"

the favicon has been changed, btw

I don't understand. Are you talking about your X account?

I wondering why my xs aren't getting much eXgagement, nor are people re-xing them. Maybe I need to sign up for x Blue.

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 24 July 2023 20:17 (nine months ago) link

why would the cops care?

The sign itself is located right on the corner of the building next to a crosswalk, thus:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f4/Twitter%27s_San_Francisco_Headquarters.jpg

What they're doing is taking the lettering off rather than the whole deal, but among other things they were doing they forgot to block off the area right below it where people are walking and, you know, not expecting a big metal letter to come crashing on their head. More here:

Okay when your own city's public utilities commission roasts you

Twitter rebranding to X is like when wipes rebranded to "flushable" wipes.

— SF Water Power Sewer (@MySFPUC) July 24, 2023

Ned Raggett, Monday, 24 July 2023 20:30 (nine months ago) link

I’m a little baffled by the outrage, since Musk is overtly, transparently trying to tank the company. Shutting it down abruptly would create a unifying event which could drive users to another site, but this erosion and fuckery is Balkanising the community and dissipating any chance of a rebuild. The mystery is why, and my current guess is its utility as an unregulated news source.

assert (matttkkkk), Monday, 24 July 2023 20:47 (nine months ago) link

That makes sense but those people will just move to another site and when it gains critical momentum will become the de facto site for unregulated, real time news updates.
