it's his current plaything. he figures that because he's such a bold genius if he just keeps tinkering with it eventually he'll land on The Perfect Formula That Solves Everything

my personal theory about Elon Musk's psychology, motivation and core values is that he's a shit cunt.

could be

lag∞n, Monday, 3 July 2023 18:13 (ten months ago) link

the articles I've read on the subject claimed that Twitter probably could tread water for a while but that the best case scenario is that it would slowly bleed out in the next 10-15 years. no idea how true that analysis is but yeah when I think of a major site going into a death spiral it's not last year's Twitter (which still seemed pretty alive), it's Twitter right now

btw based on what I'm seeing there's a good chance the 600 tweet "rate limit" never existed and that the site has just been randomly melting down. some people are saying they can't trigger it and others are saying the site's just not working at all

frogbs, Monday, 3 July 2023 18:23 (ten months ago) link

afaict twitter.com links are no longer on the first page of google results when you search for someone with a twitter account.

its pretty funny how elon tried to spin this as purposeful move but then he just used the name of the actual software thats doing it the rate limiter

lmao that this guy's business is giving out financial advice. I personally would not take financial advice from a guy who gives Elon $1400 a month for apparently no reason

it's pretty amusing to see even the blue checks turning on him. so much of Twitter rn is just "I really fucking hate Elon Musk"

i think most likely is that they tried to implement the rate limit, but that broke everything and it doesn't work properly because the rate limiter was really not meant to be used like this - some former twitter engineers were talking about that.

Twitter vibe now is sorta “it puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose!”

i've been doing the blue check search ( -filter:verified filter:blue_verified ) to block accounts today. "try reloading" blank screen has appeared a few times, but it's still loading now and blue blocker says i've added 3000 tweets to the queue.

How are embedded tweets showing up on ILX if twitter no longer allows scraping/unlogged in view?

ESP projection

sad Mings of dynasty (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 4 July 2023 01:55 (ten months ago) link

i run three accounts - two for work, and my personal one and still haven't hit the limit on any of them. But I did have trouble following people the other day, from two separate accounts.

Roz, Tuesday, 4 July 2023 04:20 (ten months ago) link

ILX has previously long continued to embed tweets after the tweet has been deleted, presumably System just made friends with the API

Meta are apparently launching a twitter substitute called "Threads"

* do not for a second trust meta to make a social media app which isn't horrible
* don't want to be reminded of nuclear apocalypse every time I open the app

So far all the shit Musk has thrown around with Twitter hasn't really affected my usage. Unfortunately the announcement of removing Tweetdeck for free has officially put the nail in the coffin. I guess I have to find something new now.

What a dickhead.

Ste, Tuesday, 4 July 2023 09:12 (ten months ago) link

xpost pretty sure they decided on “threads” because it’s not an easy word to block on Twitter

I'm going to predict that Threads will win the soshul meedia wars if anything will, because its a known entitiy, and anyone with an instagram login can start using it right away, so plain old laziness/convenience will win out like it always does.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 06:55 (ten months ago) link

for some reason* it's the winding up of @_primes_ that hits home

*(reason = me being weird, but it was just such a lovely pointless rigorous simplicity of an account: all the prime numbers in order, now we will never know what the biggest one is)

mark s, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 08:48 (ten months ago) link

did they post an illegal prime number yet?

lets see what they come up with, my guess its gonna be bad in some begging ass facebook way, like too aimed at "monetization for creators" or something, twitter isnt like the other social apps its for true posters its gotta promote real sicko behavior, which is in tension with the things competent companies want quality conversation, advertiser friendly content, profitability

Roz, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 13:31 (ten months ago) link

Don't forget, at one point gmail was invite-only, too.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 13:35 (ten months ago) link

Now would be a particularly good time to roll out to the public, when your main competitor is flailing. Of course if Zuckerberg can get his service rolling faster then it’s probably moot

nashwan, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 14:01 (ten months ago) link

I will certainly switch to Bluesky if enough of the people I follow migrate over there, but at this point "I'm done with Twitter. Meet me over on Blue Sky," is like "Look me up next time you're on the west coast."

Alito Bit of Soap (President Keyes), Wednesday, 5 July 2023 14:07 (ten months ago) link

I've been on Bluesky 3 days now; it definitely needs more work but the vibes are ok. I'm sure that will be a fleeting thing though as more conservatives log on and whine about how they're being silenced. It always works for them.

Chris L, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 14:15 (ten months ago) link

its pretty funny already the early adopters whining trying to protect their weird lil culture
