ghost feels like mastodon to me.. seems like it’s for linux people

flopson, Friday, 14 April 2023 02:50 (one year ago) link

idk man, I’d recommend using all the different things a little as a reader and maybe make a little blog/newsletter to see what the experience is like

I think the main substack pitch is the email-friendly formatting and their handling of bulk email which is trickier than you might think. lots of energy trying to pretend it’s an old-timey newsletter

mh, Friday, 14 April 2023 02:52 (one year ago) link

i’m agnostic about what site the stuff is hosted on, afaik a couple newsletters im on are ghost ones, and there’s no noticeable diff. but it does sound more complicated to set one up

flopson, Friday, 14 April 2023 02:56 (one year ago) link

are you basing that on the part where you can install it yourself? hosted ghost just looks like every other product https://ghost.org/publishers/

mh, Friday, 14 April 2023 02:56 (one year ago) link

personally i use blogspot and tumblr

flopson, Friday, 14 April 2023 02:56 (one year ago) link

like you can sign up for these things and poke around for a half hour and then delete them it’s kind of fun

mh, Friday, 14 April 2023 02:58 (one year ago) link

blogspot is just blogger with a custom domain right

mh, Friday, 14 April 2023 02:59 (one year ago) link

I think erstwhile ilxor max has some decent thoughts on why a person may want to pay for a social media platform in a recent substack newsletter of all things

mh, Friday, 14 April 2023 03:08 (one year ago) link

xps mh- sry i don’t follow what you’re talking abt. my post was based purely the time i tried to set up a ghost newsletter for a friend for 15 min over a year ago and we found it complicated and gave up. maybe we missed that feature

i like max’s newsletter. also i like how he wrote a long essay about being “the guy who famously quit twitter” and then 99% of his posts are about twitter and he’s obviously super up to date and links to like 15 fresh tweets each post. can’t get away

thinking about the “twitter doesn’t drive traffic” thing. at first it felt counterintuitive to me since so much of twitter is links but then upon further introspection i realized i rarely click on links, the feed is just too mesmerizing gotta keep scrolling

flopson, Friday, 14 April 2023 03:34 (one year ago) link

sorry for the confusion, I was just trying to remember if blogger and blogspot (and by extension, blogspot.com) were all the same thing and it looks like they are, under the Google umbrella

mh, Friday, 14 April 2023 04:12 (one year ago) link

x[ Well, also, Twitter has a relatively small user base. I don't know that Facebook is any better at getting people to click on links to NPR stories, but there are many more Facebook users than there are Twitter users. So for most mainstream media outlets, which also get a lot of referrals from search, Twitter is never going to make up a significant *share* of their overall traffic.

Lets just wipe it all out and go back to Geocities.

was content moderation an issue on other plaintext platforms like wordpress or blogspot or medium? there are/were definitely many super sketchy far right blogs on all those sites. i guess it’s a bit different w substack bc of the money

― flopson, Thursday, April 13, 2023 8:50 PM (yesterday)bookmarkflaglink

Yes the money and hosting in fact makes them more ethically and possibly legally accountable for content moderation than tools that don’t do the hosting or don’t pay for content.

― G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Thursday, April 13, 2023 9:50 PM (yesterday)

i don't know if that's necessarily true under section 230

, Friday, 14 April 2023 11:43 (one year ago) link

I’m just making stuff up on the law but I think as an ethical matter I am correct that the makers of Wordpress are only accountable for what users of hosted Wordpress post, not what people who host their own Wordpress post

can’t search it up easily on my phone but could you just intercept the phone client’s auth call to get the jwt refresh token and keep one active?

why yes I did have to implement several oauth flows against janky providers in multiple programming languages why do you ask

mh, Friday, 14 April 2023 21:24 (one year ago) link

lord that sounds just awful why do we even need auth cant we just use the honor system

perversely we probably do owe elon a gotta hand it to em for taking twitter from a place you’ll miss out on if you step away from it for a few hours to a boring ass website you can log off from for weeks without feeling you missed a thing https://t.co/y8T6fNIRXp

I got an email that @year_progress has been suspended from Twitter API, and I have to re-sign-up. At least I know where I'm at. (There was no communication till now.)

My bot is eligible for the free tier, I think, but the sign up form doesn't work. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't find it surprising that CEOs think stuff like this, but you'd think some basic self-preservation instinct would inhibit them from saying it in public
