I respect lagoon's choice but I am done, personally

I went back, for a bit. Then I got banned, for wishing ill on a Tory MP who was gloating about immigrants dying in the sea. Then I got back on again, and I'm hating it, and I feel complicit. Basically my plan is to stay off it unless I have an article or project to promote on it. It's a miserable place. It was before Elon took it over but now it's just miserable to such a vast degree, like Sideshow Bob stepping on rakes for all eternity, but still somehow carrying on.

feel like there was an explosion of enthusiasm for twitter amongst the worst people in the world when elon took over but its pretty much gone back to normal now which makes sense like if you didnt want to be there before knowing that elon is in charge is only going to go so far

lag∞n, Thursday, 19 January 2023 17:50 (one year ago) link

should say that i always use the chronological (currently "following" used to be "latest" before that was just the only option) timeline so whatever changes happen there i never see them

lag∞n, Thursday, 19 January 2023 17:52 (one year ago) link

i suspect this elon experiment wont last and twitter will have some faceless private equity bosses before long, if it doesnt just go out of business altogether which seem pretty unlikely but not totally impossible

lag∞n, Thursday, 19 January 2023 17:54 (one year ago) link

Basically my plan is to stay off it unless I have an article or project to promote on it.

Where I'm at. I have Tweetdeck set up so I know when I'm tagged or DM'd and that's all I use it for; killed out my actual main feed.

I appreciate people out there still using it for good things as they can, like this amazing thread today.

Wouldn't you love to visit the Disneyland knockoff, Nara Dreamland, in its prime? Thanks to an early 1960s souvenir guidebook, we'll do just that! Here's a comparison with Disneyland's 1962 edition.

what exactly is Elon musk getting from me using twitter

mh, Thursday, 19 January 2023 18:35 (one year ago) link

A hardon

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Thursday, 19 January 2023 18:38 (one year ago) link

xp yeah but that could be (and likely is) just as easily disseminated on tumblr or insta or whatever

not xp - you personally? nothing. "you" in the larger sense is anybody utilizing the 44b playground which is revenue. i dunno, that seems purposely disingenuous along the lines of "what exactly is r kelly getting from me listening to him on spotify"

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 19 January 2023 18:38 (one year ago) link

one hundredth of a cent

lag∞n, Thursday, 19 January 2023 18:40 (one year ago) link

advertisers bailed, his fortune is tied up in tesla stock which is dropping daily, he didn’t create the site/app/whatever and while he’s a creepy worm, people attribute all kinds of things to him (both positive and negative) that he has nothing to do with

for personal and work reasons I use software products and services by companies who have announced layoffs exceeding those he did at twitter by a large margin

I guess if me leaving teaches the world or one man that it’s bad to be a disgusting person publicly — when many are as bad or worse but keep their mouths shut — then…

mh, Thursday, 19 January 2023 18:45 (one year ago) link

instagram, the social media service famously run by an ethical silicon valley billionaire

, Thursday, 19 January 2023 18:45 (one year ago) link

I guess the third-party app disappearance means I’d have to recreate my muted words list, but I can use the site without seeing elon musk tweets (he’s blocked) and never even see his name

mh, Thursday, 19 January 2023 18:47 (one year ago) link

lol yeah Meta allows all kinds of ad hoc groups on whatsapp that are ridiculously bad but I’ll still scroll that gram

mh, Thursday, 19 January 2023 18:48 (one year ago) link

just gimmie that garbage shovel it in

lag∞n, Thursday, 19 January 2023 18:49 (one year ago) link

tbh i only use twitter its the one i like

I like the local food spots that post the sandwich of the day on instagram at 11am so I know whether to go there for lunch

mh, Thursday, 19 January 2023 18:51 (one year ago) link

my tweets are 44 billion times more powerful than the richest man on earth (bernie arnault)

mark s, Thursday, 19 January 2023 18:51 (one year ago) link

its true that posting a sandwich is the highest possible form of social media

lag∞n, Thursday, 19 January 2023 18:52 (one year ago) link

lagoon please make a tumblr version of the restaurant bot tho

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Thursday, 19 January 2023 18:55 (one year ago) link

if u set up the account and write the code for making a post (en javascript) i will put it on my server

lag∞n, Thursday, 19 January 2023 19:02 (one year ago) link

all social media is garbage, all corporate business is corrupt, these are givens

the larger question is when does the stated purpose of the app you're using shift sufficiently toward supporting explicitly heinous shit (racism, astroterfing, misogyny, you name it) that you no longer want to associate your inner life with it

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 19 January 2023 19:03 (one year ago) link

i would never associate my inner life with social media i maintain a strict firewall

lag∞n, Thursday, 19 January 2023 19:06 (one year ago) link

I used to be an Instagram defender but it's gotten harder to curate an experience (of seeing puppies, bands and architecture) and become even more of a shitpile of recommended reposts of the world's dumbest TikToks and bizarre scam ads over the last year.

Despite Musk Twitter is a paradise in comparison.

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 19 January 2023 19:06 (one year ago) link

Twitter at least makes blocking (of every ad and annoying people, including the site's owner) a simple one-step process.

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 19 January 2023 19:08 (one year ago) link

insta is definitely a garbage site. i use it for pottery, comics, art and burlesque/nightlife people and try to avoid getting stuck in pseudo-tok black holes. i'm aware i shouldn't be feeding that beast either but when you spend ten hours on making something, you wanna share.

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 19 January 2023 19:09 (one year ago) link

yeah instgram making itself into the algo influencer center is lame, someone shd make an app where u look at your friends pictures

lag∞n, Thursday, 19 January 2023 19:09 (one year ago) link

was just gonna say as shitty as twitter is, it's less shitty than instagram

a (waterface), Thursday, 19 January 2023 19:10 (one year ago) link

i assume some genzer in a garage is currently finishing a stripped down open source freeware bare bones social media interaction app with relative ease of use and without ads that is going to be everyone's default in the next year or two
mastodon is clearly not it but it's pointing to the it

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 19 January 2023 19:21 (one year ago) link

however, unlike most tech products, this is a clear problem in search of a solution which for some reason is not profitable
wherefore art thou jonas salk of social media

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 19 January 2023 19:22 (one year ago) link

I get offered lots of videos of gorillas and orangutans on Instagram, which is fine by me.

but also fuck you (unperson), Thursday, 19 January 2023 19:50 (one year ago) link

I set up blogging software the other day and I still have a flickr account so if anyone wants the rss feed link or whatever soon I will have ~content~

mh, Thursday, 19 January 2023 20:15 (one year ago) link

main reason I'm on instagram is because the nice food shop up the road only ever puts its random opening times on there and not its actual website

Insta is obsessed with showing me content about Zendaya and some guy Tom?? I don't know who he is, I only know Zendaya because she is beautiful and was in the OA.

Facebook loves to show me bloopers from The Office and sometimes Friends.

kinder, Thursday, 19 January 2023 20:48 (one year ago) link

that's zendaya's boyfriend, spiderman

mh, Thursday, 19 January 2023 21:22 (one year ago) link

facebook is just a stream of

* people carving / turning things out of wood and epoxy resin
* the hydraulic press guy
* terrible food videos

and posts from the 5 friends they have decided I want to see

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Thursday, 19 January 2023 21:34 (one year ago) link

Canceled my yearly tweetbot renewal until this 3rd party client stuff is worked out. If it ever is.

It won't be. I follow the Tweetbot devs on Mastodon and they aren't ever going back.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 19 January 2023 22:57 (one year ago) link

their livelihood is already dependent on the caprice of the Apple App Store, having it dependent on the caprice of Elon Musk of all people as well is not worth it

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Thursday, 19 January 2023 22:58 (one year ago) link

they were pretty blatantly throwing it back at twitter when the outage message's dialog box directed you to info on their upcoming mastodon client

mh, Thursday, 19 January 2023 23:04 (one year ago) link

Laughable to me that people think Insta is worse than Twitter, demonstrably false afaic

Goose Bigelow, Fowl Gigolo (the table is the table), Friday, 20 January 2023 16:43 (one year ago) link

twitter is def better than instagram but its also prob worse, theres some good stuff on instagram but overall its pretty blah, lot of marketing brain aspiring marketing brain and so forth

lag∞n, Friday, 20 January 2023 16:45 (one year ago) link

one thing twitter has going for it is its so rowdy that its somewhat resistant to that sort of thing

lag∞n, Friday, 20 January 2023 16:46 (one year ago) link

instagram (and maybe tiktok now?) is funny because way back to the blog era people were really into the whole “cultivating an aesthetic” thing in lieu of having a personality and now the high follower accounts are “what is my shtick and how can I monetize it?” and there are endless people doing silly dances or making weird faces at the camera in identical white and stainless steel kitchens

mh, Friday, 20 January 2023 16:48 (one year ago) link

"clear water breeds no fish"

, Friday, 20 January 2023 16:48 (one year ago) link

theres a mostly sad but kind of lol cycle with influencers where they get big followings by a cultivating an aesthetic following their bliss approach but inevitably their audiences will get board with them and they have to start working for the views doing dances hopping on trends and so forth, i saw a video by one of the paul brothers a while ago where he was doing this really involved craft project that clearly took all day if not more and was like wow they really put him to work lol

lag∞n, Friday, 20 January 2023 16:53 (one year ago) link

I think that’s what the reinstated right wing grift types on the site don’t get. Nobody is checking them out anymore because that project is over and people are into different shit now

mh, Friday, 20 January 2023 17:03 (one year ago) link

yeah saw some thing about the video site rumble where theyve brought on all these big names greenwald charlie kirk etc but their view counts have total cratered and the stuff thats getting eyeballs is like about pre ice age advanced civilizations ancient aliens type shit they managed to attract an audience that loves very stupid conspiracy theories but theyve tired of the politics ones and have moved on to other stuff

lag∞n, Friday, 20 January 2023 17:10 (one year ago) link

didn't realize the history channel had a new social media platform, i wish them all the best
