I went back, for a bit. Then I got banned, for wishing ill on a Tory MP who was gloating about immigrants dying in the sea. Then I got back on again, and I'm hating it, and I feel complicit. Basically my plan is to stay off it unless I have an article or project to promote on it. It's a miserable place. It was before Elon took it over but now it's just miserable to such a vast degree, like Sideshow Bob stepping on rakes for all eternity, but still somehow carrying on.

feel like there was an explosion of enthusiasm for twitter amongst the worst people in the world when elon took over but its pretty much gone back to normal now which makes sense like if you didnt want to be there before knowing that elon is in charge is only going to go so far

should say that i always use the chronological (currently "following" used to be "latest" before that was just the only option) timeline so whatever changes happen there i never see them

i suspect this elon experiment wont last and twitter will have some faceless private equity bosses before long, if it doesnt just go out of business altogether which seem pretty unlikely but not totally impossible

Where I'm at. I have Tweetdeck set up so I know when I'm tagged or DM'd and that's all I use it for; killed out my actual main feed.

I appreciate people out there still using it for good things as they can, like this amazing thread today.

for personal and work reasons I use software products and services by companies who have announced layoffs exceeding those he did at twitter by a large margin

all social media is garbage, all corporate business is corrupt, these are givens

the larger question is when does the stated purpose of the app you're using shift sufficiently toward supporting explicitly heinous shit (racism, astroterfing, misogyny, you name it) that you no longer want to associate your inner life with it

I used to be an Instagram defender but it's gotten harder to curate an experience (of seeing puppies, bands and architecture) and become even more of a shitpile of recommended reposts of the world's dumbest TikToks and bizarre scam ads over the last year.

Despite Musk Twitter is a paradise in comparison.

Twitter at least makes blocking (of every ad and annoying people, including the site's owner) a simple one-step process.

insta is definitely a garbage site. i use it for pottery, comics, art and burlesque/nightlife people and try to avoid getting stuck in pseudo-tok black holes. i'm aware i shouldn't be feeding that beast either but when you spend ten hours on making something, you wanna share.

twitter is def better than instagram but its also prob worse, theres some good stuff on instagram but overall its pretty blah, lot of marketing brain aspiring marketing brain and so forth

one thing twitter has going for it is its so rowdy that its somewhat resistant to that sort of thing

instagram (and maybe tiktok now?) is funny because way back to the blog era people were really into the whole “cultivating an aesthetic” thing in lieu of having a personality and now the high follower accounts are “what is my shtick and how can I monetize it?” and there are endless people doing silly dances or making weird faces at the camera in identical white and stainless steel kitchens

theres a mostly sad but kind of lol cycle with influencers where they get big followings by a cultivating an aesthetic following their bliss approach but inevitably their audiences will get board with them and they have to start working for the views doing dances hopping on trends and so forth, i saw a video by one of the paul brothers a while ago where he was doing this really involved craft project that clearly took all day if not more and was like wow they really put him to work lol

I think that’s what the reinstated right wing grift types on the site don’t get. Nobody is checking them out anymore because that project is over and people are into different shit now

yeah saw some thing about the video site rumble where theyve brought on all these big names greenwald charlie kirk etc but their view counts have total cratered and the stuff thats getting eyeballs is like about pre ice age advanced civilizations ancient aliens type shit they managed to attract an audience that loves very stupid conspiracy theories but theyve tired of the politics ones and have moved on to other stuff
