Downdetector says it’s coming back up tragically

logged me out of web randomly for no reason, cannot log back in or even get login modal to render.

ah yeah its doing it again for me too

I can’t log in at all on the web site now, just getting an error message.

Mastodon follows Reddit’s primary model of decentralized, volunteer moderation if I’m not mistaken. It’s the libertarian pipe dream but it has a proven history of failure on Reddit, it’s not scalable.

I’ll gladly accept the anti-discriminatory self-righteousness if that’s the worst of it as long as there’s some actual community engaged in decent quality discussion of music, science, politics etc.

My concern as with Reddit is that decentralized moderation is a formula for takeover by bad-faith actors if it becomes attractive enough to them.

similar but not quite the same as reddit which is still much more centralised by comparison (in that there is a central admin team at all) - moderation is up to the owners of each mastodon instance & so if there's another instance that's say, full of nazis, then other instances will defederate from them but then you run into all sorts of issues with who's federated with who and having to play whack-a-mole with bad instances and typical forum mod petty tyrant stuff

twitters been switching me over to "home" timeline a bunch from my preferred "latest tweets" which is something that hadnt happened in a long time, tho i may have brought it upon myself by switching over to "home" once on purpose to "see how the algorithm was doing"

yeah it did that to me after force-logging me out on web.

I've gotten some weird glitches and notices today — had to turn to my notifications back on even though I didn't turn them off, had a blue bar pop up at one point saying "Something's gone wrong." Probably related to whatever "backend" thing Elon says he cleared out.

The timeline setting is home by default, per login per client. So if you got force logged out yesterday it will be back to home.

why isn't this something that is persisted along with other user settings in the user's profile record in the db?

What I've seen today which is new to me is retweets showing with the retweeter's profile picture and name instead of the OP

i think the official story is because it's something people set differently based on which client they're on.

the real story is probably that users on the home timeline use the site more, which drives revenue, and "force timeline to home once per login" turns out to be the right revenue compromise between getting people to switch to home timeline without pissing off vehement latest timeline users so much they quit.

Tate is fucking horrible and has also inspired a wave of red pill influencer types in the last year.

yeah he had been under investigation for this stuff for a while & he'd said previously that one of the reasons he moved to romania was because he thought romanian police were less likely to pursue rape charges.
