a few of my friends have recommended guoache and i finally gave in and purchased a cheap-ass student kit!

https://i.imgur.com/80Rhwuu.jpg

i loved it. when i first started using oil i bought a bunch of the very worst student quality and figured that if i ever made it to the end of the paint and still wanted to go on, then i would "deserve" to buy better paint. i don't know why i always feel the urge to prove that i have to spend some money. but i feel the same with gouache. i have enough to last a few months, and hopefully by the end of that supply i will still be excited about and ready to get some better quality

GO-U-ACHE

GO-YOU-ACHE

i will remember how to spell this

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 12 October 2022 23:39 (one year ago) link

I say you deserve that quailty gouache right now, great colors!

corrs unplugged, Thursday, 13 October 2022 09:24 (one year ago) link

i used cheap gouache for a long time, but upgraded to expensive stuff and it is more enjoyable. it's satisfying using pigment so rich and bright it makes you wanna eat it

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 13 October 2022 14:22 (one year ago) link

thanks corrs! i think it's the brightest thing i've made in a long time, lol!

karl can i ask which brand you're using now? i am enjoying the lower-grade gouache but now i want paint that i want to eat as well! :)

Karl Malone, Thursday, 13 October 2022 14:37 (one year ago) link

i use lukas studio gouache, i like it a lot. it's a little bit cheaper than turner, which i have heard is better, but i haven't tried it yet. really tho i like having a variety of nicer stuff and cheaper stuff on hand to experiment with. i'd feel guilty using the expensive stuff on random pieces of cardboard trash and mixing it with spit and coffee grounds or whatever, which i HAVE done cause i AM wild and crazy

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 13 October 2022 15:03 (one year ago) link

nice! i have some lukas acrylic paints and they've served me well.

my secret ingredient is dog hair. every painting includes well-mixed dog hair

assert (matttkkkk), Sunday, 16 October 2022 23:20 (one year ago) link

thank you, and yes that last one was interesting because it was monochrome (or at least, sort of - "red with white and black" was the mission), and a final, new 20 minute pose after 2 hours of working on another one. the one i spent so much more time on, with all the colors available, is so much worse. it started off bad and got worse. the refresh at the end end, the new 20 minutes with a new pose and a limitation of only red + white/black, that was like plinko

Karl Malone, Monday, 17 October 2022 00:37 (one year ago) link

it's also kind of eerie how red + black can come out like blue, but it does, at least after drying

Karl Malone, Monday, 17 October 2022 00:37 (one year ago) link

like pThalo green and red can come out purple

my landlord installed new porch lights. they're so bright that they shine all the way into the middle room of the railroad-style apartment, into my bedroom. in the middle of the night i can raise my hand up in the air and the porch light will cast a direct and crisp shadow onto the headboard. shadow puppets. the lights have no switch and are always on.

i used that monochromatic titanium white/ivory black mix to throw a bucket of figurative paint on my bad self-portrait from a few weeks ago. i like it more already and am already feeling much more comfortable with it as my weird half-real face is now buried beneath many layers and will never emerge fully again, but only partly through scraping fuck yeah

uh shoot, i deleted the top image (a real life image of my front porch) because i forgot that my real life address is on there. in case it still somehow gets through, please do not sell my real life address to the spam crew

and i really love the painting!!!

thanks lavator!

yeah, the light thing is funny and impossible. i'm not even going to try to do anything about it. the deal is, one of the tenants (one of those doors) is elderly and all she cares about in life - besides stopping abortion and banning contraception and saving people from the covid vaccine, which she believes makes men impotent - is calling the landlord and complaining about stuff. she moved in on the same day i did, last year. since then i've heard dozens of things that she believes are horrible and insufferable in our apartment. there has never been a time, since the very first day, when she was not on an epic tirade against the property management and waiting for them to call her back, waiting for a maintenance guy, always waiting on something that she was expecting to happen. i mean, of course i respect the endless epic battle against the landlord. i think i'm on my 14th or 15th rental in 20 years. landlords are horrible. but in this case...our house is...fine? maybe my standards are low.

ANYWAY, for months and months she complained about our front porch light. it was too weak, and it starting to flicker. it was kind of annoying, i get it. the problem, though, is that she had bugged them hundreds of other times about other things that were trivial. so around the time the porch light was flickering, she went on another epic quest to get it fixed, and annoyed them so badly that the property management sent out an email to every single tenant asking them to no longer call them with requests, but to put it in email instead, and that "our agents are doing what they can to get your concerns addressed...while constant phone calls actually impedes the process and slows down our response times to and for you." which was kind of bullshit but i 100% get it with this tenant. she asked for my number repeatedly and i never gave it to her because i don't have the willpower to listen to her complain about how everything in life sucks so badly, every single day.

ANYWAY, they finally replaced the light, i'm sure she wanted it as bright as possible, and i'm sure they were like "have at it, here are the airport lights"

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 14:59 (one year ago) link

i asked if she renewed her lease. she did. "why?", i said, given all the problems. she just shrugged and laughed. hey i get it

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 15:00 (one year ago) link

i see. obnoxious tenant vs passive aggressive landlord. sorry you're caught in the middle. but maybe those lights protect you from covid so it all fits together

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 15:38 (one year ago) link

i use the lights to tan my balls to counteract the sperm-destroying character of the covid vaccine

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 15:39 (one year ago) link

it's a delicate balancing act to be sure

Characteristics of a Railroad-Style Apartment
۞۞
Commonly found in tenement-style, walk-up, multi-family buildings
Long and narrow rectangular floor-through layouts
Rooms flow into one another generally with hallway(s)
Railroad layouts may include one central hallway, room-dividing archways, or in some cases a hallway off to one side with multiple entry points

oh thanks! it's actually the one in the middle-bottom, which is a quick version of a toulouse-latrec. the rest are from a workshop i've been taking the last couple months. i've really found some kindred spirits, a pair of teachers, younger than me by quite a bit (i think -- i haven't asked their age) that i really respect a bunch. i've never had the opportunity to have a live model to look at while i paint, and i didn't realize what a big difference it makes.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 17 January 2023 06:29 (one year ago) link

all of these (except the one at the bottom i copied) are quick - 1 hour poses, 4 15-minute sessions. it's been amazing to work on them, up there with the best experiences of my life, truthfully. it's so hard (for me) to fill it all in, to block it all in, in an hour. there's simply no time. i feel the wrinkles in my brain forming, in real time. it's crazy, i love it <3

great stuff karl. solid work, good proportions. painting/drawing from life is the best, i miss it. i love how the longer you look at something, slowly you start to see more and more - colours, textures, forms. and yes it can be super intense, when i was doing 15 minute portrait paintings, "i feel the wrinkles in my brain forming, in real time" captures it perfectly!

i've been doing nothing but figure drawing/paintings the last few months, but did something more abstract tonight on my own, with no reference.
i'm not sure if anything meaningful comes through but i can feel a change in how i see things, compared to a relatively recent time, and in a year or two or five of really despondent times it feels like a bright spot that if nothing else, when i try, i see things differently now

love that plant, something about the lines make it very action packed

corrs unplugged, Monday, 30 January 2023 09:51 (one year ago) link

thanks corrs! i did that one at my friend's house - she has a wonderful sun room and lots of beautiful plants. my place, in contrast, is very dark and has zero living organisms other than me, my dog, and whatever tiny invisible creatures are crawling around the surfaces.

in the year 2023 i resolve to paint more plants
