Can I make a mini-rant for a moment?

I opened my gmail to find yet another right wing email from my Dad about how the economy was JUST FINE until the evil Democrats took over in 2006. For one thing, apparently we no longer have a President according to this logic, or checks and balances, but the overall thing that makes me crazy is that CORRELATION DOES NOT EQUAL CAUSATION FFS.

I'm not saying that I think the Dems have done a bang-up job, but FOR GOD'S SAKE. It is just frustrating to know that my parents are so in the tank that Bush can do no wrong no matter what. Also that they don't think any deeper than this.

It's the same shit that makes people go "oh, vaccines cause autism" and then never look any deeper to see if that is really the problem. The consequence is that you never find out what the actual problem is. AAAAARGH.

Seriously, how am I related to people who don't get this?

Okay, sorry if I got carried away there.

My mom's totally loving Sarah Palin. It could be so much worse, Sara.

I think I found the thing to make your parents fall right out of love with the Reps this time. They're Catholic, right?

Advice. Googling people I came up with a childhood crush. We had mutual affection for each other through jr. high and then diminishing contact in HS. All around he was a neat guy. We were in gifted & talented and yearbook together.

I e-mailed him and he wrote right back. He's married and living in Colorado now. He and his wife will incidently be leaving for a wedding in Austin tomorrow. He says he'd love to have dinner with us on Saturday.

Hmm, on one hand I'm glad to make contact with him but on the other hand sitting down for dinner after one day of e-mail contact with someone you haven't spoken to in about 15 years seems a little uncomfortable for me. I think it might be more uncomfortable for G. as he is extremely anti-social.

I don't know, should I get over it and take the rare chance to meet face-to-face with a long ago friend or say "we'll be out of town, sorry"?

Fightin' lions with a switch (Susan), Wednesday, 8 October 2008 14:36 (fifteen years ago) link

well if it's weird you can make up a reason to leave early ("gotta get to work by 6am tomorrow omg!") and you never HAVE to see him again - not like he's down the street!

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Wednesday, 8 October 2008 14:38 (fifteen years ago) link

No, you should be OK: everybody's married and dinner will be fun if it's someplace casual. One of my HS friends just moved to London and we are having a blast.

Yeah, basically keep it cordial and everything should be awesome.

haha, maybe just some Mos Def.

I don't know, I'm not really feeling it. Although it does seem a bit providential that I decide to seek him out the day before he will be visiting my city.

Fightin' lions with a switch (Susan), Wednesday, 8 October 2008 15:25 (fifteen years ago) link

I think you should do it. The worst thing that can happen is that you realize that you actually hate this guy now, and then you have go borrow John's mace.

suzy, thanks for the link but it's probably hopeless and I don't even know why I care at this point. I guess I just want to be related to rational people.

And now I can't even correct this oversight because all I'm allowed to read is a med surg book with print that is causing me to suspect that bifocals may be in my near future. BIFOCALS, PEOPLE.

I will be lucky if I can read Pynchon ever, now.

omg. my sister has just informed me that she was interviewed by f0x n3ws about palin's look and that they asked her to try on palin glasses and then asked why so many fashionistas are into obama. sooo wish my internet was not dial-up slow tonight so i could look for this!

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Thursday, 9 October 2008 02:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Ha, wow! Sarah Palin's looks are about the only thing I do like about her, and that is on shaky ground when she starts with the ugly pink jackets. Michelle Obama's style, however, I love. (If only I were that tall...)

xp Okay guys, rank your Thomas Pynchon loves and hates for future reference.

surely we are all Palin fans? an unparodyable politician is a truly special thing; you should appreciate her before she is once more irrelevant, back on her porch and glaring at Russia.

we have this clown:

and he is the elected Mayor of London. so very proud of my people.

supporter? eww gross no.

btw anyone who votes for someone "because they're funny", should be automatically disenfranchised. that is why he ^^ is now in charge of real things and it upsets me greatly.

The Mayor of London looks shockingly like the doddering character that Tim Conway used to play on the Carol Burnett Show. I suppose it's the hair.

Yes on Crying BTW.

I will never start a poll thread. But please choose which celebrity photo is most amusing/terrifying/whatever in this gallery:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/gallery/2008/10/06/GA2008100600760.html?hpid=multimedia1&hpv=national

Best: number 16, of course, showing one of the GREATEST BANDS EVER etc.

Worst: number 18, and Dan will agree with me since it shows Thandie Newton in an embrace with someone who is neither of us.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 9 October 2008 17:25 (fifteen years ago) link

OMG is that salma hayak nips!?! they cant put that in the washington post!

Bright Future (sunny successor), Thursday, 9 October 2008 17:29 (fifteen years ago) link

So we can all agree that Dan agrees with Ned, are they the same person, etc. etc. Thandie Newton always strikes me as way too skinny, though, you guys. (Admittedly she doesn't venture into Lara Flynn Boyle territory...)
