'Dirrty' and 'Slave 4 U' seem to send people into absolute dancing fits, as do anything by MJ and Justin, but we knew that already. Also, Mr Scruff's 'Get A Move On' (a Manc anthem/cliche) and 'Chicken In A Box' (a much better track for my money), Beats International's 'Dub Be Good To Me' and just about any Neptunes, Chemicals or Daft Punk track. Most recently, people went wild for Len-'Feelin' Alright' (Dust Brothers remix) and 'I Feel Love' when I last played out and a mate got good results with LCD Soundsytem's 'Give It Up'.

Cornelius' 'Ball-In Kick Off' nearly killed it for me once even though it was mixed into 'Bentley's Gonna Sort You Out' and his remix of Coldcut perplexes everyone but me. Otherwise, I have no other personal killer tales.

'Shine' by Lil Wayne is also guaranteed floor filler especially if you have loads of ice and when you throw out your arm the bitches think it's snowing!!

DJ Kool "Let Me Clear My Throat"

Security should forcibly eject people if they don't dance to this.

FILLER: "Electric Slide". Duh!

KILLER: Microhouse. It's a conspiracy by nerds to get revenge on ppl that enjoy dancing. Seriously.

Lord Gorlok, Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:10 (twenty years ago) link

barima - bang on about scruff. it has become a cliche oddly.
it's like 'oh great get a move on' every time i think about
even putting it on. but fckng ace all the same. one of
those records that will feel in about 5 years like they must
have sold 500,000 copies at the time but didn't even chart.

Marc Smith & Safe'n'Sound - Identify The Beat

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 16:35 (twenty years ago) link

Filler for mixed crowds i.e. weddings = any old school hip hop that samples classic rock (biz markee's "nobody beats the biz", de la's "eye know", ton-loc's "wild thing"). Any "electronic dance music" without any words in it is a total killer in this situation.

BrianB, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 17:45 (twenty years ago) link

filler = My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult - "A Daisy Chain for Satan"

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Thursday, 14 August 2003 07:34 (twenty years ago) link

Filler: "Takin' Care Of Business" by BTO, "The Sex That I Need" by Avenue D

J'aime les sucettes (call mr. lee), Thursday, 14 August 2003 23:54 (twenty years ago) link

I think there's a law that says you're allowed to shoot anybody who doesn't rush to the dancefloor when Dead Or Alive's "You Spin Me 'Round" starts up

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 7 November 2003 06:33 (twenty years ago) link

regarding rock n' roll dancing, it's the best. just pretend you're a spastic and freak the shit out to tunes such as 'My Generation' and 'You Really Got Me' or what really gets the adrenalin pumping is the Pistols' 'God Save the Queen'. Any high octane juiced up jam where you can bounce or headbutt like a maniac is a killer filler, dig.

BUMP. Great thread but it needs to be expanded upon.

anyone got anything to say about "move on up"?

Yep - unlike Dancing in the Street, You Can't Hurry Love, Reach out I'll Be There, Twist and Shout, and others, it's not a dancefloor filler but a dancefloor killer for the old folks at a wedding.

ledge, Thursday, 16 August 2007 08:44 (sixteen years ago) link

sad but true, that.

Tom D., Thursday, 16 August 2007 11:50 (sixteen years ago) link

The best songs have enormous variations in tempo, beat and dynamics. Which makes, for instance, "Supper's Ready" useless for dancing.

If you ever DJ to a mexican crowd any song by Sonora Santanera is a filler.

Moka, Friday, 17 May 2013 06:00 (eleven years ago) link

Like, honestly, I've been going to all sorts of different events in Mexico for the past 10 years and everytime they start playing Sonora Santanera around midnight (Selena, too, sometimes) is the cue for people to stand up and fill the dancefloor.

OTM. From a wedding I was at last week: 'Brimful of Asha' (I didn't request it, but me and my wife were the only ones dancing).
Instant floor filler at that same wedding: Culture Beat - 'Mr. Vain'

Killers - Most of what people at dance parties request

So true!

From my own experience, and in the wrong context some of these would probably be killers.

Fillers:
Hall & Oates - Out of Touch
Mr Flagio - Take a Chance
Debbie Jacobs - Don't You Want my Love
Patrick Cowley - Menergy
Colonal Abrams - Trapped
Davina - Don't You Want It
Cajmere Feat. Dajae - Brighter Days (Underground Goodies Mix)

Killers:
Peekay - Up In The Air feat Phily. I once got the best reaction of the night playing this track, and was convinced I'd discovered the most underrated garage banger of all time. Next time I played it I completely misjudged the mood of the after party I was playing at, completely cleared the room and decided it was the worst track of all time.

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 18 May 2013 01:33 (eleven years ago) link

Last nights fillers:
Fat Freddy's Drop - Shiverman
Missy Elliot - Work It
Chemical Brothers - Swoon (Lindstrom/Prins Thomas mix)
Kinks - All Day and All of the Night
Daft Punk - Get Lucky
Chi-lites -Stoned out of my Mind
Millie Small - My Boy Lollipop
Delroy Wilson - I Want Justice

killer:
Lindstrom - I Feel Space

As much as it pains me to say these 'hip hop' segment filled the dancefloor on my recent trip to a club in pto vallarta, as you can see people in mexico don't really know or care much about the genre:

macklemore - thrift shop
house of pain - jump around
naughty by nature - hip hop hooray
mia - paper planes
usher - yeah

Moka, Friday, 12 July 2013 22:22 (ten years ago) link

I would dance unashamedly to the latter four.

crüt, Friday, 12 July 2013 22:23 (ten years ago) link

Also whatever pitbull song is making the rounds.

:´(

Moka, Friday, 12 July 2013 22:23 (ten years ago) link

I actually danced to all of those, so I'm guilty of charge. Hip Hop Hooray was a nice surprise, I very rarely hear it on clubs.

Moka, Friday, 12 July 2013 22:24 (ten years ago) link

"Hip Hop Hurray" is just as much of a 'token rap song that gets white dudes excited' as "Jump Around"

lady steendriver (The Reverend), Friday, 12 July 2013 23:25 (ten years ago) link

i got some djing duties at a party the other night and while 'we are family' and 'good times' were obvious winners 'tell you (today)' completely cleared the dancefloor, i thought i was on a surefire winner and then i just felt sad.

Last night I heard Michael Jackson - PYT mixed before Estelle - American Boy and into some remix of Gap Band - You Dropped a Bomb on Me. It was pretty good!

Moka, Sunday, 26 January 2014 21:38 (ten years ago) link

I always keep Robyn on my iPod, cause when I go to a private party and my iPod becomes the source of music, sooner or later a girl will walk up to it and either put Robyn on or ask 'why is there no Robyn on here?'

'Call Me Al' used to get people dancing a couple of years ago, not sure about now though for some reason. Old nineties pop/rap/r'n'b - 'Return Of The Mac', 'Creep', 'NEver Gonna Get It', 'California Love', 'Keep Their Heads Ringing' etc always gets people my age on the dancefloor.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 26 May 2016 00:13 (seven years ago) link

If you live in Latin America there seems like there has been one or two Pitbull fillers every year for the past 10 years or so. Dude is a fucking party franchise in here it's getting ridonculous. This summer it's 'Como yo le doy' and 'Fun'. Last summer we had 'El Taxi' which was an annoying remake of 'Murder She Wrote', before that it was 'Timber' 'Dont stop the party' 'sube las manos pa arriba'...

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 26 May 2016 00:25 (seven years ago) link

I'll bet Pitbull's NBA Playoffs theme from 2014 would be a killer though
