It was kind of a meta joke — like “look at this, this is what the algorithm rewards”. But in effect it dehumanized women musicians so this context isn’t exculpatory at all and I understand why they hated him

I never read HRO because I wasn't interested in it so I have absolutely no stakes in defending its tone or its coverage of Grimes, which I am 100% certain was shitty

That doesn't make it any wiser to confess to committing cybercrimes in your Vanity Fair interviews, though

maybe the statue of limitations has run out

Chappies banging dustbin lids together (President Keyes), Thursday, 24 March 2022 19:37 (two years ago) link

All of the coverage about this has been very explicit in saying there's no statute of limitations on cybercrime offenses in Canada

castanuts (DJP), Thursday, 24 March 2022 19:38 (two years ago) link

oh ok, I'm sure Elon will break her out of jail then

not saying ddosing is good or grimes hangs out with good people but I do find it pretty hard to feel bad about the hro dude losing a couple years' worth of ways to call someone disgusting and fat (seriously wtf is his fixation on weight, the worst stuff on there wasn't even about the artists but his weirdass "i am just a disgusting ugly fat girl who no one loves and my boyfriend and family keep abusing me but i think i deserve it" persona)

It seems unlikely that this case will be prosecuted.

Wasn’t HRO posting sexist garbage as a parody on the real gossip blogs and zines posting sexist garbage seriously?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 24 March 2022 22:06 (two years ago) link

Yes, but since it was about specific members of a much smaller scene, it was effectively the same.

when satire is indistinguishable from the real thing it's not really that funny

boxedjoy, Friday, 25 March 2022 00:06 (two years ago) link

Wait are we saying Grimes is cool for doing this because fuck Carles? She’s not the hero in this story. Fuck both for all I care.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 26 March 2022 01:13 (two years ago) link

don't think anyone is defending her here just agreeing that carles was terrible

ufo, Saturday, 26 March 2022 01:19 (two years ago) link

I don’t think anyone is defending carles either

Anyways, in other news Grimes did a small appearance and preview of her upcoming shit song Utopia at a crypto event:

"The mostly male crowd drew from a wide variety of roles, including blockchain coders, venture capitalists, crypto traders, hedge fund executives, lawyers, marketers, designers, musicians, gamers and even some government officials."

https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2022/03/24/avalanche-crypto-event-woos-35k-to-barcelona-with-late-parties-late-starts-long-lines/

Sounds about right.

The fucking irony and audacity of announcing this at a tent dubbed “eco-chamber” at a crypto event smh

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 26 March 2022 01:38 (two years ago) link

Sorry “eco-dome”

that quote is from like 3 or 4 years ago & is moreso crazy incoherent views from having spent too much time on lesswrong (see: the belief in inevitability of ai dictatorship) than fascist

ufo, Saturday, 16 April 2022 03:52 (two years ago) link

def some resonance between lesswrong and fashy stuff tho

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Saturday, 16 April 2022 05:22 (two years ago) link

I know I’m a broken record here but expecting Grimes opinions on anything other than her own music or anime or w/e to be coherent has been an exercise in futility

When that entire “I think AI could make music” thing happened a half dozen musicians who work in that space tried to explain what she was saying didn’t quite make sense, offered to talk about it, etc. and then she drifted on to the next thing instead

M.I.A.: I'm at a dentist in Mexico.

Grimes: Why?

M.I.A.: I'm trying out this new thing that people do in America.

Grimes: Is it the vampire teeth?

M.I.A.: No, is that a thing here?

Grimes: Yeah, my friends who live in Brazil got vampire teeth.

M.I.A.: I really fancied coming here and then thought, “While I'm here I'm going to be a good old American and get all my medical stuff sorted out.” I felt a bit bored and fancied the challenge. So now I can talk about these issues: I went to the dentist and it cost me like $50, and then if I go to one in Beverly Hills, it's a lot more expensive.

Grimes: Yeah, it's crazy.

M.I.A.: It was interesting to see the quality, and it helps me keep on top of what is going on economically and with the standard of living, so I can speak from experience.

Amazing

i'm glad MIA talked about some of the concerns with crypto, particularly how if too many people get wallets there could be storage difficulties

I hate that I thought these two were cool persons a decade ago.

It's always disappointing when a favorite artist that represented where the music should/will go begins to slip, but I feel like more and more of them lately are just falling off a cliff in all the worst ways.
