That new Ensiferum album is dreadful. The wheels fall off prettty darn quickly on that one.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 19:32 (fourteen years ago) link

Ensiferum are terrible, period. I suffered through their set on Sunday night. Polka beats and kilts = not metal.

unperson, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 20:43 (fourteen years ago) link

Now Chuck will say otherwise!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 20:50 (fourteen years ago) link

I like Ensiferum. Actually Phil's partially to blame for that.

But the new record tries way too hard. They're best when they keep things simple.

I kind of want to do a first wave of Norwegian Black Metal poll (are there enough ILM metal fans to justify this?) Do I need any other options (Gorgoroth maybe?) of does cover everyone important?

Burzum
Darkthrone
Emperor
Enslaved
Immortal
Mayhem
Satyricon
Ulver
Some other Norwegian Black Metal band

i should imagine there is. But beware of voting for the band youve heard of syndrome.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 22:14 (fourteen years ago) link

Are any of these bands really more notably famous than any other at this point? I guess Immortal might be the least famous and maybe Emperor the most, but it's a pretty thin margin even there.

i was more thinking of LJ and I voting Ulver :)

Knoxville AC Entertainment is proud to announce Planet Caravan, a two-day music festival celebrating the origins of heavy music at The Orange Peel Social Aid and Pleasure Club in Asheville, North Carolina. Featuring a line-up of some of the best emerging and established rock and metal bands, the debut festival showcases heavy music in many of its various sub-genres and incarnations, from doom and psychedelic to progressive and experimental.
-
"Planet Caravan is an homage to the pioneers of heavy music," says event creator Charlie Jennings. "The event spotlights bands that carry on the traditional sounds of heavy rock and blues but also push it into new and exciting territories."
-
This year`s festival features Maryland hard rockers CLUTCH, who released their ninth studio album, Strange Cousins from the West, on July 7. Highly influential, recently reunited doom metal legends PENTAGRAM will appear for a rare performance. Swedish progressive metal band BURST will make its first-ever U.S. appearance at Planet Caravan. ORANGE GOBLIN, named "the best underground band in Britain," by Metal Hammer magazine, will make their first appearance in three years and their only U.S. performance in 2009. And, hot off their newest release Static Tensions and a major tour with MASTODON, Georgia band KYLESA will bring their sludgy brand of rock to the Planet Caravan stage.

VITUS and THE OBSESSED fame) appears with his new project Wino. Hot new San Diego band ASTRA will perform tracks from their recent Rise Above/Metal blade release The Weirding. In other firsts, San Francisco`s ORCHID will make their debut performance outside the Bay Area. Rounding out the bill will be Mike Vallely`s REVOLUTION MOTHER, modern blues rockers TADDY PORTER, and Knoxville`s own PICK UP THE SNAKE.
-
That the first Planet Caravan is being held at The Orange Peel is a testament to the club`s premier status in the rock community. Named one of the top five rock clubs by Rolling Stone in the magazine`s "Best of Rock 2008" issue, The Orange Peel is situated in vibrant downtown Asheville, N.C. Since it opened in 2002, The Orange Peel has hosted revered performers including QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, KING CRIMSON, WOLFMOTHER, THE FLAMING LIPS, WILCO, SONIC YOUTH, and 311, as well as special performances by THE BEASTIE BOYS, BOB DYLAN, BEN HARPER, and a nine-night residency with the SMASHING PUMPKINS.
-
Asheville, situated in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina with an estimated population of over 70,000, is recognized for its unique Bohemian culture, natural beauty, and lively downtown, often referred to as the "Paris of the South."
-
Planet Caravan presenter AC Entertainment is a Knoxville, Tenn.-based, full-service concert and festival production, management and marketing company that books and presents more than 500 events a year throughout the nation. AC Entertainment, along with partners Superfly Productions, produces the annual Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival."

xp Nah he's first. I was kind of thinking guys like him or Thorns (who I guess only had that reheasal tape during this period, so whatever) were more "Some other Norwegian Black Metal band", but I can add him/them.

I just sent that very same press release to a friend in D.C. last night. I want him to go and tell me how Pentagram were.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 23 July 2009 16:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Echoing Nate's sentiments from a few weeks back, the new Bloody Panda is definitely as cool as expected. One of the more original doom bands out there, not to mention one of the most genuinely scary.

Terrific artwork on this album as well...

"Or is he 2nd wave?"

there are many people who consider mayhem, emperor, etc 2nd wave.

you know, 1st wave being bathory, hellhammer, sarcofago, etc...

scott seward, Thursday, 23 July 2009 20:28 (fourteen years ago) link

just do the damn poll and let the nerds complain!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 23 July 2009 20:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Mayhem have been around as long as Sarcofago (both had 1st records out in 1987). But yeah, I suppose, if that stuff counts as "true" black metal or whatever. I dunno, I have no idea where people draw the line on these things.

1. How is it hat Unsane--especially the newest CD--isn't considered metal?

2. What's the general feeling here re: Nightbringer?

i, grey, Friday, 24 July 2009 20:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Unsane rule. One of the few bands that reformed and came back with 2 albums as good as,if not even better than,1st time round.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 24 July 2009 20:45 (fourteen years ago) link

All my feelings are specific, rather than general, but I like Nightbringer's Death and the Black Work a lot. It's operating in its genre, for sure, but I think it's a pretty decent standard-bearer for what it sounds like to do Black Metal wholeheartedly and well.

glenn mcdonald, Friday, 24 July 2009 21:22 (fourteen years ago) link

I agree re: Unsane's extreme rule-agr and if they're not metal than I'm made of nylon shoes.

Just got a nice parcel of LPs from Adrian's estate. They're selling his collection on ebay. Felt real weird bidding at first. Then I realized that I'm a devout fan AND a Dj and these records really couldn't be going to a better home.

Nate Carson, Saturday, 25 July 2009 01:41 (fourteen years ago) link

That's awesome. I wish I had the cash to bid on every one of Adrian's Banzai LPs, I've been perusing the ebay site over the last month or so. I'm not much of a collector, but one thing I've always dreamed of owning was the complete Banzai catalogue.

A. Begrand, Saturday, 25 July 2009 01:45 (fourteen years ago) link

What's the Banzai story? Turns out I did get a few from him. Trouble - The Skull and Destruction - Infernal Overkill.

Also got my holy grails - Morgoth's Odium and Cursed. (and a copy of Fields of Nephilim's Dawnrazor for the hell of it).

Nate Carson, Saturday, 25 July 2009 02:03 (fourteen years ago) link

I love the Banzai story. Basically a Montreal record store owner by the name of Meese finagled a distribution deal with Canada's PolyGram Records to put out pretty much every single important underground metal album from the US and Europe across Canada...they licensed Metal Blade, Megaforce, Neat, Noise, Combat, and because PolyGram was a major label, kids in every single corner of the country, no matter how mainstream the record store, were privy to the most cutting-edge metal on the planet between 1983 and 1988. Banzai's influence was massive on us Canadian kids in the 80s. And like an idiot, I sold a lot of my Banzai stuff save for a precious few, so I've always wanted to make up for that stupidity.

A. Begrand, Saturday, 25 July 2009 05:02 (fourteen years ago) link

That's amazing. I can't believe I hadn't run into that before. Canada is so weird.

Nate Carson, Saturday, 25 July 2009 23:48 (fourteen years ago) link

Turns out Echoes of Eternity are pretty decent when they actually bother to write songs that don't all sound the same. Still not fantastic, but As Shadows Burn kind of rocks at times, and the female vocalist is much better integrated. Maybe they aren't really boring live anymore, although I wouldn't place bets on that one.

Their debut was really disappointing, but it looks like I'll have to give the new one a listen.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 01:12 (fourteen years ago) link

My review of their debut was so negative that it got rejected from the publication that assigned it to me, so you can imagine how I felt about that one. This is a vast, vast improvement.

Whoa, exciting news! I didn't know anyone else on here had heard it yet. Cannot wait.

I don't know what the release date is. I got it from Epitaph via Play MPE software. Thirteen songs, four of 'em in the 90-second range and the last one is one of their seven-minute moody epics.

Poll on my MSN blog: When should a band/artist pack it in? (You can pick up to three answers, which makes it better than an ILM poll.)

Haha. That Black Dahlia Murder artwork is so bad its hilarious.

Pretty impressed by the Eagle Twin record on first listen. Guitar tone is thick as hell. One or two of the songs sound like Mark Lanegan if Screaming Trees had been a doom band

unperson, who got gender reassignment surgery (and why was it a bad thing)?

The drummer from Rhino Bucket and the singer of, I believe, Cretin.

Not all of them were based on real-life examples. I know there was a real band where that happened, but the names escape me; I just tossed that one (and several others) in for humorous effect. Obviously, there are counterexamples to many of the reasons I cited; Napalm Death has no original members, and Lemmy is 100, but I don't want either ND or Motörhead to break up.

unperson, Friday, 31 July 2009 18:38 (fourteen years ago) link

It was Cretin, Phil.

interesting, i hadn't heard of that.

fwiw i voted for 'reality show recruitment', 'members file suit against each other', and acoustic/orchestral greatest hits, which seem to be leading.

Remember King Kobra from the 80s? Their singer had gender reassignment surgery.
