"Brownout in Lagos" is INCREDIBLE.
Also our dog went nuts while we were listening to "The Human Factor".

"Brownout in Lagos" is INCREDIBLE.

yeah big time. and sounds like something really new for them which is a cool thing to be able to do when you've got so many records out.

dmr, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 18:13 (fourteen years ago) link

Rated O might be favorite thing this year. Might. It's a sprawling monster, but after repeated listens things really start to form a clear shape. Um and you know...doobage and stuff.

SourPatchCorpse, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 21:47 (fourteen years ago) link

That's a well-written review, but I'm really thrown by the 6/10 rating. The review certainly reads much more positive than that rating indicates.

Clash's policy indicates that 6 is actually a pretty good rating. It didn't get higher cos from a personal viewpoint I don't think of it as a "listen to it every day" album.

Hypnagog Minds (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 23 July 2009 13:10 (fourteen years ago) link

Mine too, this week anyway. Seriously each disc is awesome in its own right. Love these guys.

would love to see them live again, they rule pretty hard live

when i first saw them i couldn't listen to anything else for 2 weeks, that would have been around the second album

willem, Thursday, 23 July 2009 14:12 (fourteen years ago) link

I dunno I think there are some cool sounds on this thing but I miss their songier songs and the whole thing is just too long and overwhelming. I don't hate it or think it's bad but I don't really want to listen to it.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 23 July 2009 14:17 (fourteen years ago) link

ah cheers willem! and a weekend so double good, you think it will be sold out?

no idea

rizzx, Thursday, 23 July 2009 14:26 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd give it a 7 (love "Brownout in Lagos," don't hear anything on the rest of the album that even comes close; you can let it play through but it's really long.) Favorite albums by them are still Steel Rod EP and Each One Teach One.

xhuxk, Thursday, 23 July 2009 14:38 (fourteen years ago) link

I think that Secret Wars(one folowing EOTO) is somewhat slept on.
I very much prefer Oneida in full on Krautpunk mode to Oneida playing songs, but I've always been most appreciative of the live experience, too.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 23 July 2009 14:45 (fourteen years ago) link

^^^^ This, on all accounts. I can see why n/a might not feel this as much as the more "song-y" stuff, but for me these guys have morphed right into the direction I like best.

Great show tonight. Disappointed no Sheets of Easter or 1030 at the Oasis, but you can't have everything.

and fantastic in Brighton. love the new record. once you give it a few spins you realise 3 discs isn't that overwhelming.

Jamie_ATP, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 23:15 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i think the 3 discs work pretty damn great. it's less like a record and more like a rehearsal space jam, in a good way

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 23:19 (fourteen years ago) link

I was all set to go tonight until I realised how much work I had to do :(

I thought I'd registered my approval of the new thing - especially the techno influenced jam on CD1 - on this thread but apparently not

Women Respond To Bassong (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 23:23 (fourteen years ago) link

i should probably mention when they play at ATP New York in a few weeks they're basically going to be performing for a whole day, improvising with members of other bands playing the event and recording it all in order to release the highlights. me = pretty hyped.

alright, "10:30 at the Oasis" is chillwave. Had to be said.

Rated O just gets better and better. The River is such an awesome song. Did anybody nom it for the 05-09 Tracks Poll?

I didn't nominate any of the songs for the Tracks poll because it was so. fucking. hard. to pick just a few. Just an astounding album all around.

saw these guys back in may and they started off with "sheets of easter." hilarious watching a crowd get really into it at first and then realize around 2 minutes in, "oh shit, are they seriously going to keep playing this?"

also according to bandmember showtime the last LP in the trilogy is finished and going to be called "Absolute II"

we put on a secret show for them in london five years or so back, and the setlist was 'sheets of easter'/'new day rising'. it was unbelievably awesome.

are you some kinda rap version of marc loi (stevie), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 22:27 (thirteen years ago) link

For my money the best "rock" band in New York right now. Have seen them a bunch of times over the last year and they have always brought it in different ways. Ironic this was bumped today as their "Presents the Ocropolis" show was just announced for the Godspeed ATP, further tempting me to sell everything I own and head over to that. I was quite disappointed that more people didn't place Rated O high on their Best-of lists last year. Best LP released that's even in the orbit of "rock" music.

MFB, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 22:53 (thirteen years ago) link

two months pass...

^Yes, to all of that, although I think Rated O is the kind of album that takes a long time to really sink in, because there's just so much of it and it takes so many different turns.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 19:35 (twelve years ago) link

I saw them a few times in London. Each time people were talking through their sets. One time, there was a guy braying about his overdraft facility for about ten minutes straight through the first two songs. I pinned him to a wall and threatened to knock his teeth out if he didn't shut up. One of the most shameful incidents of my 30s.

(He shut up but the ephemeral bubble of gig enjoyment had been decisively burst by that point.)

Actual LOL Tolhurst (Doran), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 19:40 (twelve years ago) link
