Ensemble Al-Umayri: The Sawt of Kuwait

Clapping used really distinctively throughout the Gulf states. Slightly similar to flamenco or to some things I've heard from Mauritania or from various Saharan groups, but I think this use of clapping is more interesting. Quick, complex, rhythms clapped out, sort of as a chorus after verses. I would like even more of it in each song though.

I mean it. The clapping here is unequivocally great.

Does anyone remember that episode of The Patty Duke Show where she is present at a recording session and is accidentally recorded clapping or something, and at first it seems like she ruined the take but it turns out it made it better?

The Beatles excelled at this
I listened to "Roll Over Beethoven" yesterday and the handclaps kind of bugged me.

'Bargain' by the Who (1971) has a nice use of handclaps - two closely spaced pairs, recurring every 8 bars (I think) during the verses only.

On a more contemporary note, I've noticed that a lot of r&b and hip hop records at the moment seem to have totally dispensed with a snare drum and have a big, fat, crisp 808-style handclap instead (ie in place of the snare, not mixed in with it). I like the sound of that.

Porno for Pyros, "Tahitian Moon," especially because they clap on the off-beats IIRC

Jefferson Starship, "Runaway," because they sound so casual, unforced, as if it were an impromptu studio decision.

I think there's an album on Aquarius that is just segued recordings of applause from concerts. the whole album is clapping. maybe some whooping and whistling too. I think it would make me nauseous.

Paul de Santa Cruz, download that Kazem el-Saher file I linked too! (Ah, you probably won't like it.) And yes, actually this mp3 is from a rare, if not out-of-print, album. I have it on cassette but haven't had luck finding it on CD.

No. Sanford & Son theme beats all.

ALthough there's nothing notable about the claps qua claps, there's a great claps-guitar-and-vocal breakdown in the middle of Rilo Kiley's "Love and War (11/11/46)."

I did, even before I was instructed to do so. I like the rhythm elements, not into the whole track quite as much.

I have to admit I find it somewhat draggy toward the middle. I do like the floaty ney sound and the keyboard. It's actually a lot less cheese-pop than most Iraqi pop music I've heard (maybe because it's a pop version of what seems to be an old Arab standard).
