there was an amusing interview with his very tetchy spokesperson on BBC WS the other day where he claimed Duterte was a victim of "cyberbullying"!

The endless victim complex, just like Trump. I would say this narcissistic reflexive defensiveness in these individual leaders is predictable enough that it must make them fairly easy to manipulate for those with the proper skillset. But now that kneejerk narcissism has become definitive for their entire political parties it gets a little hard to separate the individual from the mob.

(I thought the thread revive would be about him claiming he’s retiring from politics, didn’t he already try that once. Apparently he’s still quite popular and if he does retire there’s a good chance his daughter will step up. Horrid people — their clan, not the entire nation! All the folks from the Philippines I’ve met have been pretty awesome.)

some might need a VPN for the bbc interview here where his succession is also discussed and he says Duterte considers his daughter the best candidate but he's "conflicted" about her being exposed "to the ugly face of politics" lol

I went to the Philippines in 2006 with a friend's girlfriend, did not realise I would be spending a week in her house in a shanty town, but it meant that it was a very memorable experience. There was a market openly selling crack just down the road, but also her sister was on the run from the police because she was unable to pay a hospital bill.

Apart from her, I know various Filipinos from living in Ely, somehow we got in with them. All lovely people, and all seem to support this evil monster Duterte.

This is taking them at face value tho! They might truly be like that, Trump I'd certainly assume so, but they are also playing into the fascist rulebook, their base needs to be convinced that everyone is against them at all times and that they are the only protection against the traitors within. It registers as narcisism to us but it gets the job done.
