Interviewed Dio today. Nice old guy. Got him to talk about his 1950s rock 'n' roll cover band years and making the turn toward heavy rock in the '70s.

highly recommend the new Necro Deathmort album if you like fat beats AND heavy doom. that probably won't be everyone here. such an entertaining album. album title of the year too: *This Beat Is Necrotronic*

Going back and listening to some stuff from earlier this year that I skipped over without a lot of time spent and surprised at how solid the new God Forbid still is.

Yeah, it's easy for those early-in-the-year releases to become buried, but I haven't tired of the God Forbid at all.

So the new Sonata Arctica is a return to the more straight-ahead stuff of earlier this decade. Frilly as ever, of course. I quite like it.

Darn, no Immortal! And no Cave In either: it's pretty amazing to know that they recorded 'Until Your Heart Stops' when they were like 17 or 18 or something ridiculously young like that.

I'm actually glad the hardcore content was kept to Botch and Converge. All my favourite Hall of Fame pieces are of the metal variety.

But yeah, it would have been cool to see Immortal included.

Personally I'd class that particular Cave In album as way more metal than Botch or Converge, so it would really be right at home. But you can't have 'em all, I suppose.

I need to dig out my old copy with the Immortal feature - I'm not a fan of black metal, but the Immortal dudes come off really well in the interview, they've got a healthy sense of humour about themselves.

The one I wish wasn't left out is Katatonia's Brave Murder Day. That piece was terrific.

It must be pretty hard for them to squeeze in concerts and recording between Scott Ian's grueling schedule appearing as a talking head on any fucking show ever that will have him.

I downloaded the Sonata Arctica, but I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet -- a zillion cool albums popped up on iPool the past couple days, and I've only had a chance to check out the Behemoth (see above). In the queue: Ensiferum, The Ocean, Vader, One Without, Ravage, Divine Heresy, Leaves Eyes, Tenet, Son of the Morning, Fools Game, Landmine Marathon, Job for a Cowboy, Moss, Church of Misery... the Sonata Arctica is probably first on the list, though. Things have been crazy with Comic Con coming up. The Born of Osiris record is pretty sweet, though.

Job for a Cowboy started as a deathcore group, and evolved into a predominantly death metal sound with their full-length debut Genesis. (Wiki)

Oh, and the new 69 Eyes record is fun in the same way that all of their records are fun.

Talking of which, I'm enjoying the hell out of the Zarach Baal Tharagh retrospective compilation "Eternal Darkness" from At War With False Noise records of Kilmarnock - a funhouse of bedroom BM production insanity and compulsive garage-rockin' riffage.

deathcore is a mix of commercial death metal and metalcore.
Metalcore is of course the most commercially successful "extreme metal" genre so death metal fans see deathcore as watered down commercialisation by trendy scene kids.

or i guess death metal with melodic clean singing and lots of breakdowns?

That new Ensiferum album is dreadful. The wheels fall off prettty darn quickly on that one.

Ensiferum are terrible, period. I suffered through their set on Sunday night. Polka beats and kilts = not metal.

Now Chuck will say otherwise!

I like Ensiferum. Actually Phil's partially to blame for that.

But the new record tries way too hard. They're best when they keep things simple.

Are any of these bands really more notably famous than any other at this point? I guess Immortal might be the least famous and maybe Emperor the most, but it's a pretty thin margin even there.

I just sent that very same press release to a friend in D.C. last night. I want him to go and tell me how Pentagram were.

Echoing Nate's sentiments from a few weeks back, the new Bloody Panda is definitely as cool as expected. One of the more original doom bands out there, not to mention one of the most genuinely scary.
