Joyce Carol Oates is really tearing it up on Twitter lately, getting ratioed left and right. The latest outrage involving some speculation about non-binary pronouns’ acceptance in English

Josefa, Wednesday, 6 October 2021 23:43 (two years ago) link

that was painful to see

Dan S, Wednesday, 6 October 2021 23:50 (two years ago) link

she did title one of her great novels Them. They is not much of a stretch

Dan S, Wednesday, 6 October 2021 23:56 (two years ago) link

love how she has an open mind about isis but considers halloween decorations an absolute insult to life itself

lag∞n, Thursday, 7 October 2021 01:33 (two years ago) link

she’s a literary-minded 83 year old

mh, Thursday, 7 October 2021 01:41 (two years ago) link

i mean so am i but that doesnt stop me from correctly ranking isis and halloween on the evilness chart

lot of self confidence from the literary sect on all fronts

mh, Thursday, 7 October 2021 01:59 (two years ago) link

don't hate her, she has written some pretty great novels

Dan S, Thursday, 7 October 2021 02:00 (two years ago) link

i dont hate her most of her tweets are pretty funny, part of what makes it work is shell have some harebrained idea but then the tweets are really compellingly written because obvs shes good at writing, and its also funny because shes a famous writer basically just out there shitposting, and shes old too lol, its all pretty delightful, the transphobic ones are actually bad tho

lag∞n, Thursday, 7 October 2021 02:13 (two years ago) link

I guess her most jaw-dropping tweet to date, for me, was the one from several years ago where she suggested that clinically depressed people should simply read some Ancient Greek drama.

Tbf god knows I’ve made some terrible tweets (normally quickly deleted) and I generally appreciate people who don’t filter their thoughts too much or apologize too freely

Josefa, Thursday, 7 October 2021 02:30 (two years ago) link

lmao its so loony how could you even be mad

lag∞n, Thursday, 7 October 2021 02:35 (two years ago) link

Clay, Thursday, 7 October 2021 02:57 (two years ago) link

pretty sure that's not what she was saying but i found another tweet where she gave a rave review to ricky gervais' after life so i'm not gonna go crazy trying to defend her.

Try clearing your cookies. I've been dealing with that in incognito only for some reason (still get the popup in normal chrome but can just X out normally) and even then, if you open the tweet in a new tab you should be able to scroll normally. This is for PC only, I can't get it to work on mobile.

i have to do this multiple times a week on desktop and mobile, for some reason chrome just doesn't register the "never allow cookies" setting. annoying

i have resorted to installing a chrome plugin that performs a quick cookie removal of whatever site you're on

Football · Trending
Jamal Adams
Fans assess Jamal Adams' performance after the Seahawks safety said he was the 'best in the nation' during his video introduction in Seattle's Sunday Night Football showdown against the Steelers

the way Twitter phrases their trending topics is so weird and oftentimes hilarious

frogbs, Monday, 18 October 2021 01:51 (two years ago) link

And with this we can now close Twitter and possibly the whole human experiment

I like the early Beatles, early Elvis, early Bob Dylan and early Rolling Stones. “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” by Neutral Milk Hotel is a great album. Nirvana did some good stuff.

I know it's fun to believe anything you see on the internet, but it really isn't that difficult to step out of your house and go to a supermarket and see that you can buy whatever you want at any time.

My paternal grandparents spent a lot of time in pre- and post-war LA and like most of their friends there, hated the Reagans. They knew about Nancy’s adventures in kneeling and my grandmother had a copy of that Kitty Kelley book, which delighted her because it verified a lot of old gossip.

Sorry Kentucky. Maybe if your 2 senators hadn't spent decades blocking legislation to reduce climate change, you wouldn't be suffering from climate disasters. If it's any consolation, McConnell and Rand have f'ed over all of us, too.

2021 was a good year for tweets. Gonna post a thread of some of my favorite. I know it’s gonna seem like some of these are a joke but I promise you they were tweeted in earnest. Going chronologically:
