cool, i will check that out--i want to trade an amount of my beer drinking for whiskey sipping so something tasty and cheap will help that process.

north sea jazz dit weekend (call all destroyer), Thursday, 16 July 2009 14:08 (fourteen years ago) link

that is pretty much why i bought dickel xp

mark cl, Thursday, 16 July 2009 14:08 (fourteen years ago) link

Somewhere around 16th and P/Q, bought whilst walking from Dupont circle to the Doubletree.

was probably Cairo at 17th & Corcoran - good little shop, especially great beer selection.

mark i will confess that it's been a while since i've bought a fifth of bourbon but i always thought of maker's as really not much better than jim beam if at all

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 16 July 2009 14:23 (fourteen years ago) link

and i prefer evan williams to either, which is (i believe) cheaper

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 16 July 2009 14:24 (fourteen years ago) link

they def aren't cheap and they may seem trendy but these hudson river valley whiskies are really really good

can anyone recommend a good, affordable sipping rye? is old overholt any good? jim beam rye? looking for something in the $15-$30 range that won't give me a hangover. will likely be sipping it neat

mark cl, Friday, 17 July 2009 13:26 (fourteen years ago) link

will def not be mixing

mark cl, Friday, 17 July 2009 13:27 (fourteen years ago) link

sazerac is good - not sure how much that is in the US but i would have thought it would be in that price range.
rittenhouse is also good but prob not for just sipping

just sayin, Friday, 17 July 2009 13:40 (fourteen years ago) link

funny, i didn't even know sazerac is a co., thought it was a cocktail until i just went to their website

mark cl, Friday, 17 July 2009 13:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Beam Rye is actually pretty tasty. I would recommend it neat or on the rocks.

how does it compare to old overholt? (which i've never tried, but i'm just really loving its bottle:)

mark cl, Friday, 17 July 2009 15:35 (fourteen years ago) link

rittenhouse 100 proof is good in that price range, old overhold & beam rye are both excellent for the money (should be $12-15/bottle)

I have never had overholt, actually.

But I would take I DIED's advice on matters of alcohol and cocktails.

this is inspiring me to hunt down some dickel. i've had it before but didn't pay much attention.

tonight i am drinking fighting cock, which i bought because it was like $18.95 and the name is funny. it's not bad. 103 proof though woah.

i always wanted to try those hudson whiskeys, but i never felt flush enough to spring for them.

have you guys had black maple hill?

tehresa, Sunday, 19 July 2009 04:32 (fourteen years ago) link

so the overholt, didn't work out so well as a sippin' drink. i think i just need to get used to the rye, though, it seems a bit harsher than bourbon. will definitely give it another chance.

this weekend i visited some friends in NY, one of whom gets all kinds of complimentary spirits through his job. got to business around 1pm on saturday, mostly mid-range stuff with a few 'entry-level' whiskies like jameson

(should mention that i'm a whiskey n00b so 80% of these were my first tastes, the rest probably just 2nd or 3rd)

1pm - highland park 12 (friend has these awesome riedel single malt glasses that he also got through his job, suited this perfectly) this was awesome
2pm - jameson original - liked it a lot. was obviously a step down from the highland park but i think this could work well as a kind of standard 'house whiskey' to have around the apartment
3 pm - johnnie walker black, also sipped a little bit of the red since i've never had it

took break for falafel, walk around neighborhood, checked out whiskey selections in local liquor stores

5pm - crown royal, not too much of a fan. too sweet? tasted kind of syrupy. will probably not bother with this again, tho i guess it could be worth a second chance. also, kind of laughed at the fancy bottle/purple pouch thing matched up with a plastic cap. you'd think they'd throw a nicer cap on it
6pm - sampled some rums that he also got for free. can't totally remember them, abuelo something?

took break for dinner, drank some wine

8pm - woodford reserve, favorite of the day for sure, followed closely by the highland park. gave myself a big pour
9:30pm - highland park in the fancy single malt glasses again, finish like we started

mark cl, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 15:27 (fourteen years ago) link

highland park was my first favorite whisky

it has the added bonus of making a very good gravity bong if you remove the bottom of the bottle

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 15:30 (fourteen years ago) link

for that real smoky flavor

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 15:31 (fourteen years ago) link

haha

mark cl, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 15:31 (fourteen years ago) link

that's adding some class

'i huff my gravity bong w/ highland park 12 bottles, nothing but the best'

mark cl, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 15:32 (fourteen years ago) link

do you really not get a hangover with good whiskey?

Daniel Baboon (brownie), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 15:42 (fourteen years ago) link

can't say for sure. i didn't feel great on sunday but i wasn't exclusively drinking good whiskey. was mixing w/ wine & rum & cheaper whiskies too

mark cl, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 16:01 (fourteen years ago) link

don't think i've ever gotten drunk solely off good whiskey to the point that i'd otherwise get a hangover tbh

mark cl, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 16:01 (fourteen years ago) link

I have gotten HAMMERED off really expensive whiskey, and yes.

You get hungover as fuck off good whiskey.

Żubrówka is the only liquor that has ever had that magical effect, and i was in my early 20s, so..

Springbank makes some unbelievably good whisky as well

Just as I suspected. xpost

mark cl, Monday, 27 July 2009 01:07 (fourteen years ago) link

mark cl, Monday, 27 July 2009 01:07 (fourteen years ago) link

going back to george dickel as i type

mark cl, Monday, 27 July 2009 01:08 (fourteen years ago) link

also found knob creek sold at around the corner for $29. picked it up, seemed like a good deal and was the last bottle they had. most other places around here are selling it for $38-$40

mark cl, Monday, 27 July 2009 01:09 (fourteen years ago) link

i've had old overholt out at bars a few times, but never seen it in a store. the only thing i can find regularly is the beam rye, which is very easy to drink.

ian, Monday, 27 July 2009 01:17 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i was at a nice cocktails place on thurs and they were doing overholt with a couple other elements to make a nice sweetened version. sold me on picking it up for 13 bucks--that was the price at the really expensive liquor store!

call all destroyer, Monday, 27 July 2009 01:26 (fourteen years ago) link

woah that is expensive for knob! i'm used to it being in the 32-35 range?

tracer, zubrowka, <3!

i just made bulleit + soda. nice revive timing.

two weeks pass...

what do people think of bulleit bourbon?

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a1/NEW_BULIT_750ML_lo_res.jpg

bought some the other day and tried it last night. thought it was really good. definitely didn't strike me as a soft bourbon, it was even a little harsh. lots of cedar imo. really good and fairly complex.

mark cl, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 13:02 (fourteen years ago) link

meant that to be an image, not italics

mark cl, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 13:02 (fourteen years ago) link

w/ some friends last night we did a blind tasting of the 4 whiskeys i have: knob creek, bulleit, g. dickel, and old overholt. it was pretty fun! old overholt was pretty clearly the least complex, knob the most. knob won out over the bulleit for the ~$30 range.

mark cl, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 13:05 (fourteen years ago) link

big fan of bulleit, when i first found it (living in tucson at the time) it was cheap too

i need to do a blind tasting one of these days.
