Pigeons Playing Ping-Pong

I mean, jesus, even if they weren't fourth rate jamband also-rans that would still be one of the worst band names I've ever heard.

There's that whole category of band names you weren't put off by, but you feel you have to qualify recommendations of them with "but they're good, honestly" when the person you're talking to pulls a face. My Bloody Valentine and American Music Club for example.

the kim variant (Matt #2), Thursday, 1 July 2021 19:11 (two years ago) link

Bands you like but only listen to when no one else is around because of the anxiety caused by worrying someone will ask what you're listening to and you'll have to say their name out loud

cwkiii, Friday, 2 July 2021 00:27 (two years ago) link

(Which also has the separate subcategory of names you don't know how to pronounce, but that's off topic)

cwkiii, Friday, 2 July 2021 00:27 (two years ago) link

I still don’t know how to pronounce “Charli XCX” (and I’ve listened to all her albums).

Foxygen

― ✖,

Yeah, red card. You can't come back from 'foxygen'

Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 July 2021 00:54 (two years ago) link

A band called Deflatormouse C/D?

Alba, Friday, 2 July 2021 00:58 (two years ago) link

Haha, that's fair.

Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 July 2021 01:02 (two years ago) link

I came up with deflatormouse when i was 10, but there are other deflatormice out there. Including (i think) an emo band.

Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 July 2021 01:04 (two years ago) link

Foxygen, too, would have been ok as a screen name.

Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 July 2021 01:14 (two years ago) link

It's pretty interesting seeing what's a complete no-no for other people. I can see how agreeing a band name might be a nightmare. For me Foxygen is a bit goofy but it's short enough not to bother me. It's when a band name is three words and more of snippet of bad poetry than a band name that I'm like uh-uh.

Alba, Friday, 2 July 2021 01:26 (two years ago) link

foxygen is a triple whammy of sounding stupid, inexplicable and somehow boring

, Friday, 2 July 2021 01:33 (two years ago) link

They were just kids

Pitchfork: Which one of you came up with the name Foxygen?

Sam France: It was something my friend said about a guy that she found attractive. She said he was sexy or hot, or that he was her foxygen, or something like that. We were probably about 13. I don't know why, but it stuck.

Alba, Friday, 2 July 2021 01:36 (two years ago) link

I think a lot of terrible names probably come from bands when they are very young. See also poor old Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, whose career I think was probably sabotaged by that name.

Alba, Friday, 2 July 2021 01:38 (two years ago) link

After struggling to come up with a band name, they decided "we might as well stick with the most ridiculous crap name we could think of."

Fair enough.

Alba, Friday, 2 July 2021 01:40 (two years ago) link

"foxy" in general needs to be approached with caution.
Gzm never stood a chance anyway.

Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 July 2021 02:01 (two years ago) link

Good or not, the name suited them for a time

Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 July 2021 02:02 (two years ago) link

Yeah for a time but by 1998 or so they were writing a lot of non-weird, classically beautiful songs that I’m sure could have had a wider audience without that baggage.

Alba, Friday, 2 July 2021 02:07 (two years ago) link

I was about to say, we're talking about a band that sang "i'm a pekingese/i'm a cottage cheese" over a faux metal riff with fake monty pythonesque opera singing.

Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 July 2021 02:09 (two years ago) link

Hobestly tho, I think their later stuff could have had a wider audeience if they'd written it in the 1970's

I like gzm don't get me wrong. And love 'barafundle' in particular

I have a friend who insists that Foxy Shazam is the worst band name of all time. I always maintain that it's not even the worst band name with 'foxy' in it tho. That name, despite my better instincts, actually makes me curious to hear the band.

I'd like to theorize that modifying 'foxy' with even more dubious words sonehow lessens the blow, but that would be terribly dishonest. The truth is i actually really like the word 'shazam'.

Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 July 2021 03:02 (two years ago) link

I think I like the word foxy quite a lot.

Fairly certain there's at least a few songs with a "Charli Ecks-See-Ecks" tag on them.

Her first name is actually pronounced Ceeharley

I'm afraid Greentea Peng fits here for me. Undoubtedly I am missing out, but it sounds like a YouTube channel about health food shops or an artisan teabag brand.

Greentea Peng is a funny one bc her name def fits the vibe

Must’ve missed it! That’s obv my first guess, but it sounds like someone’s uncool dad guessing (wrong) how to pronounce an artist name.

rn I am listening to Freakadelic by Jooklo Stellar Tribe; I really love this record a lot but man if anything was worth mentioning in this thread...

cwkiii, Friday, 2 July 2021 16:48 (two years ago) link

I did pointedly ignore the Jooklo groups for several years before stumbling across a description of this record that finally made me curious enough to check them out, so it is actually on topic haha

wheatus, com truise, twin peaks

kurt schwitterz, Tuesday, 6 July 2021 15:56 (two years ago) link

Wheatus's debut album was weird, they were obsessed with the iROC, which they mentioned in "Teenage Dirtbag", but are also pictured in one in the liner notes.

and i know this cos one of my best friends bought the album and i have clowned him ever since

not up to Aerosmith standards (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 6 July 2021 16:18 (two years ago) link

The band derives its name from the nickname "wedus" given to the Brown brothers by their father when they were children

OK but what the fuck is wedus.

Alba, Tuesday, 6 July 2021 16:46 (two years ago) link

Another song from the album, "Punk Ass Bitch", was bought by the creators of Jackie Chan Adventures and reworked as "Chan's the Man", the end credits theme for the program's first season.

new one: The Goon Sax

r u rolling pop 2021 (morrisp), Friday, 9 July 2021 14:48 (two years ago) link

Dry Cleaning is a chore not a band name.

AJD, Friday, 9 July 2021 15:56 (two years ago) link

Goon Sax is apparently slang for teenagers taking the silver bag out of box wine so they can walk around and drink out of their jackets, which you gotta respect that

Well, I think the slang is goon sack, so turning it into a sax pun is what you’ve got to respect or not

Alba, Friday, 9 July 2021 16:03 (two years ago) link

It’s in the proud tradition of sax on the beach imo

Alba, Friday, 9 July 2021 16:04 (two years ago) link

haha yeah i like it

also i think it just looks more appealing visually written out "goon sax" vs "goon sacks"

I was just happy to learn about goon sacks, wish i would have thought of that when i was a kid

To those unfamiliar with Manchester and Glasgow but on top of swinging London mythology, it’s a bit like naming your band Carnaby Street.
