I've been posting for a few months but never got around to introducing myself (how rude). In Austin, TX but originally from New York (upstate). Incapable of playing an instrument, but keen to listen.

patita (patita), Friday, 10 February 2006 17:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Where in upstate New York? We have a few veterans from there -- I was in Saratoga Springs for three years. And hi there!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 February 2006 17:28 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm Jack, 23, finishing undergrad in political science, thinking about graduate school in political philosophy, live in Toronto.

I've been a daily-lurker, sometimes-poster for maybe 6 months now. I've always loved music, but owing largely to an insanely conservative religious upbringing (Acquire the Fire rallies, CCM, reform party of canada, christian summer camps, you know the type), I've only got about 3-4 years of serious "secular" (ha ha) listening experience under my belt. So please forgive the occasional noob questions!

Two albums I've recently "discovered" thanks to ILM and absolutely adore: Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden and Villalobos' Achso EP.

jackl (jackl), Friday, 10 February 2006 18:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Acquire the Arcade Fire? Oh dear. ;-) Anyway, hiyer, and Talk Talk and Villalobos are fine places to me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 February 2006 19:00 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't think I ever did this and if I do a search for 'Ned' - well you can guess...
Soooo...I'm 41, married with 2 children, living in the Leicester area of England. My favourite book is The Mezzanine by Nicholson Baker. I holiday in the unfashionable end of south Norfolk coast and recommend Curry Fever in Leicester. I have an MA in Public Order. I first posted a question to ILX in December 2001 but then kept quiet for four years. I still don't know how to do italics or bold. Ned Trifle is an homage to Hal Hartley and my love of food.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Friday, 10 February 2006 19:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Actually that makes two Neds on here with MAs. So how come they keep saying we're uneducated? *flees wrath of Scottish posters*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 February 2006 19:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Ned Trifle is an homage to Hal Hartley and my love of food.

No offense, but i was sort of hoping you were Hal Hartley. And...I just learned how to do the italics thing, thanks to BakedBeanTeeth.

kwhitehead (stephen schmidt), Friday, 10 February 2006 19:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Can't I have an homage to myself? - no-one else is...

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:00 (eighteen years ago) link

I've never introduced myself. Ben lurking for about four years; the thread on Sleater-Kinney's The Woods finally got me off my non-posting ass. Somehow it always comes up in my posts that I'm married to a music critic -- that's how I ended up here. I'm a 29-year-old grad student in art history. This minute, listening to Serena Maneesh, and enjoying it even though I'm not usually into that much distortion. Also, I seem to be a thread killa -- typically after I post, no one comes back.

belle haleine, Friday, 10 February 2006 20:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Time to break that trend, then! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Man am I late! Anywho... I'm Robert. Although I'd love to list some examples of my favorite bands/groups, everytime I do, I kick myself for leaving out groups who I really like but just haven't listened to in a while. So I'll just say that my taste in music spans from the 1960's all the way till the early to mid 90's. Yeah, I don't mean to sound like a jerk but, typically I just hate most new groups that I hear/see. My listening adventure is going in a backward direction anyway. But to give you all an example of my musical tastes I'll tell you what I'm currently listening to. PiL's "Second Edition", Swans "Filth/Body to Body Job to Job", No Trend "Too Many Humans", lots of Husker Du, Pixies, Big Black, a little of this a little of that. And I absoluely LOVE that Scratch Acid "The Greatest Gift" cd!
Well besides the music thing.
I'll be 22 next month and am in no hurry to get there.
I've been playing the guitar since I was 13, which my mom actually taught me (and the only reason I'm not embarassed about it is cuz A) John Lennon's mother taught HIM. and B) My mom is brilliant and had the patience to sit through my favorite songs at the time, figure them out and then teach them to me.
Ummmm other than that. I'm currently studying Japanese and Art.
and......
nice to meet you!

Good lord, frightening thought.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 11 February 2006 01:45 (eighteen years ago) link

xxxxx-post The Mezzanine is a terrific book! I've been a Baker fan for ages. He's like an American Robbe-Grillet. Sort of.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Saturday, 11 February 2006 01:54 (eighteen years ago) link

That's the second time ILX has made me want to read that.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Saturday, 11 February 2006 02:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Thank you all...... I assume it's me your'e welcoming. Seeing as I was the last one to introduce myself. Plus it's gonna take a lot more than "how d'yer do" to bed me!(I've been told on many an occassion that I am a man of class!):-)

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Saturday, 11 February 2006 02:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Have I never introduced myself here? Shite! How rude! Hi all, for those who don't me, it's Charlie from North Herts, UK. 25, working as a company trainer for an internet thingy. Been here for, ooh, well ages now - 2001? People generally either ignore me round here or they photoshop my picture into historical comedy situations.

Dog Latin (dog latin), Saturday, 11 February 2006 02:15 (eighteen years ago) link

Hi, I'm Jacob, and I'm 29. I've been reading here for the last year, and have only recently started writing more. The music I am currently obsessing over is the early work of Scritti Politti, early 80's r&b/disco, Kate Bush(as always), Badfinger, and Robbie Basho. I sometimes dj, mostly at parties, and I've started dancing more. I love a lot of the personalites on here, and have learned a lot.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Saturday, 11 February 2006 02:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Hi I'm Mark and I've been posting for about 2 years. I am 29. I have a propensity for posting when I'm totally drunk, but somehow have managed not to say anything completely stupid yet. Give me time.

I like all kinds of music, except rap and country*

* I like rap

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 11 February 2006 02:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh, and I live in Austin,TX, usa.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Saturday, 11 February 2006 02:23 (eighteen years ago) link

hi i'm john. i've been posting occasionally for nearly three years. i have a mix from doglatin off slsk. i tend to post mostly when drunk (like now). i am 34 (!), a corny indie fuq, taller than you unless your first name ends with -o and your last with -ington, and getting married next week to a girl who likes the yankees and most of the music i like except for laika. i respect yet hate steely dan, abhor the word 'utilize', and considered inviting the members of superchunk to my wedding. on most ilm threads i agree with nabisco--except, of course, when he's wrong.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 11 February 2006 02:55 (eighteen years ago) link

hi mookie, didn't realise you had one of my mixes. congrats on the marriage!

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Saturday, 11 February 2006 03:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, I'm a totally corny indie fux0r, except when I'm not. I'm probably as tall as mookieproof. I'm married to someone who likes Death Cab For Cutie. I'm currently listening to the Cockney Rejects. They are the best band in the world.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 11 February 2006 03:06 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm as corny as the indies get and totally rockist about it too.

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Saturday, 11 February 2006 03:15 (eighteen years ago) link

I've been a lurker / rare poster for about a year. I'm Jeff, 31, web-development type person, from the UP of Michigan. But will be moving soon to wherever the wife gets a college professor job upon which time I probably will look into being a grad student or calling my own bluff on my culinary aspirations.

Lately I've been heavily revisiting my musical formative years by digging a lot of 80's punk rock and hip-hop, but I like most everything cause I'm pretty sure theres lots of music I love that I haven't heard yet.

joygoat (joygoat), Saturday, 11 February 2006 06:38 (eighteen years ago) link

HELLO, I am Quinn.

A/S/L = 23/F/Philadelphia (recently moved from Austin, TX)

I became addicted to this site (mostly the Noise Dudes board) for about three weeks, and now I mostly like to read the ILM for interesting recommendations and YSI tracks. My favorite music is krautrock/psychedelic/noise/anything bitchin'.

killy (baby lenin pin), Monday, 20 March 2006 22:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Halloa and how do. Yay anything bitchin'!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 March 2006 22:36 (eighteen years ago) link

sorry I never came back to see your response Ned--I'm from Saratoga Springs! How on earth did you end up there for 3 years? It sure as hell explains why you reviewed Animated Porcupine on AMG though!

patita (patita), Monday, 20 March 2006 22:56 (eighteen years ago) link

i come for continuation of the thisly and thusly story...

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 20 March 2006 22:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Hahahah, very cool. :-) Yeah, I lived there from 1982 through 1985 -- my dad was commander of the Naval base at Ballston Spa. I know about Animated Porcupine cuz Emily was a good friend of my sister's at that time and they kept in touch over the years. :-) There's at least one other Saratoga Springs veteran on the boards, Caitlin (from America as opposed to the UK).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 March 2006 22:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Hey,
I'm Will, 20 years old, lurker and rare poster under many different names for the past year or so. I am from NJ but go to the University of Michigan (seem to be a few other Wolverines here). Figured I might as well introduce myself so I have at least SOME credibility given ILM's insularity. I tend to like noisy or psychadelic music most. Some of my faves are Butthole Surfers, My Bloody Valentine, Wire, Can, Brainiac, and Big Black. And props to ILM for essentially introducing me to Royal Trux, Karp, Gravitar, The Wipers, Disco Inferno, and a bunch of other top flight bands that I now consider among my favorites.

W Gary (Schade), Monday, 20 March 2006 23:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Credibility? We spit on it. (A lie, perhaps.) All Disco Inferno fans highly welcome, of course. :-) And so you're the Gravitar freak, are you? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 March 2006 23:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Hi, I'm Sean, 22 and from Boston. I've known about ILM for a while but just started posting recently--opinions aside, there's an impressive amount of knowledge here. I don't really know what to say about what I like, except it's wide-ranging and there's really no pattern to it (at least that I can find). I'm currently trying to listen to reggae. So, yeah, it's nice to be here.

Sean Braudis (Sean Braudis), Monday, 20 March 2006 23:33 (eighteen years ago) link

ned, are "disco inferno" fans also welcome??

haitch (haitch), Monday, 20 March 2006 23:33 (eighteen years ago) link

And heya to Sean.

No, Haitch, I'm afraid they must be killed. Oh wait.

Hi Will! I'm U-M class of '98. I hate most of your favorite bands. Welcome!

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 20 March 2006 23:36 (eighteen years ago) link

x-post
If you're talking about the guy who wanted all the "crazy psychadelia," that wasn't me. I stumbled upon that thread a few months ago while searching for ILM's opinion of the Butthole Surfers. But yeah, that thread basically convinced me to shell out the $7 for "Now the Road of Knives," and the Gravitar love just blossomed from there.

Hey Joseph! Class of '08 here! And I'm used to the hate, my friends are all "there is no good music after 1980" classic rock fans!

W Gary (Schade), Monday, 20 March 2006 23:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Hi Will! I'm U-M class of '98. I hate most of your favorite bands. Welcome!

It's quite possible that I attended your graduation. Anthony Kiedis might have been there too.

Hi Will! I am a maladjusted, bitter guttersnipe. However, your favorite bands are A-OK with me.

Hi everyone. My name is Oscar and I live in the Bay Area. I was introduced to the boards by a fellow music and am glad he did. My music tastes are schizophrenic: jazz, punk, psych, disco, shoegaze, noise, classical, latin.I am hoping to engage in some heated discussions in the future, all in good fun of course.

Matt. 38. Lurking for years. Ned sent me a Disco Inferno 5eps CD a couple or so years ago.. (thanks again Ned!)

As for labels, Post-Rock and Krautrock are what I'm all about.

A wonderful place for reference and good discourse, this.

Sum Fitch, Sunday, 11 March 2007 01:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Hello, oscar, and what type(s) of Latin music do you like (granted, you listed that last)? (Hello Sum too. Not a big Krautrock fan, but I did have on Ralf und Florian earlier, if that counts.)
