Guys,

This place looks like a lot of fun. Do you guys listen to The Streets?

Steve

Steve Shasta (diamond), Thursday, 12 January 2006 22:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, The Streets are great but any accusations of "lisping" are way off the mark!

"Geezers Need Excitement"

Geezerz need excitement
If their lives don’t provide them this they incite violence
Common sense simple common sense
Geezerz need excitement
If their lives don’t provide them this they incite violence
Common sense simple common sense

Out the club about three, to the take-away
The shit-in-a-tray merchants, shops got special perchant for the disorderly
Geezerz looking ordinary and a few looking leary
Chips fly round the sound of the latest chart entry
An incendiary waiting to blast
No harm with the contest who can throw the furthest
Behind the counter they look nervous, but
Carry on cutting the finest cuts of chicken from the big spinning stick
Then over flies a chip, flips, and hits you on the back
You spin round on the attack
’fuck you playing at? he looks like a cheshire cat, almost falls down
Your frowns and superman eye lasers don’t even register
By now you want to leather this twat
And forever you're gonna regret that, your choice of path
So mash his head up and your girl's now fed up
But stop to think and it’s never gonna be the jackie chan scene it could have been to end up

Nobody did Steely Dan better than Steely Dan, but everyone who did Bowie did Bowie better, for pretty much every stage of his career - I'd much rather listen to the Associates, or glam Eno, or etc etc etc.

there was this dude in my college that i used to have a few musicology classes with. he'd always raise his hand in class and talk and emphasize everything with "etc, etc, etc". very annoying. apparently he's found his way to ILM :(

jaxon, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 22:34 (sixteen years ago) link

it's a terminal nerd condition called Precise Vagueness... the person can't make inaccurate or insufficient statements without feeling like they'll make themselves look stupid so everything's "kind of" or "possibly" or "in most cases" fuzzed out like a mudhoney guitar line. "etc etc etc" and "QED" and whatever extra bonus point snazzy way they can cover everything they didn't know to add.

many developers have this disease. drives the suits CRAZY. "is it secure YES OR NO?!?!?!!" "most likely." "[the sound coming out of your mouth when brains are popping]"

msp, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 03:56 (sixteen years ago) link

this is actually my biggest writing weakness, i always over-qualify

s1ocki, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 04:11 (sixteen years ago) link

haha me too, top phrases include "in certain ways," "for some people," "at some point"

max, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 04:12 (sixteen years ago) link

i get plenty of jokes at my expense over it. "msp's gonna say 'weird' again! LOL!" it's really kind of silly cause they want a very definite answer. for them that's short and to the point. for me, deep in the details, the definite answer is lost to wild speculation. i'm giving them the closest real answer i can. it's fucked up because when i say, "we're pretty secure" i mean, "we're as secure as you're gonna pay for" ... the best practices we can muster. yet i KNOW it's still wide open on points A, F, and Q... meanwhile, there's shit we don't even know about cause we're too busy to go there.

in my own way, i'm being as definite as i can. they don't see me as definite at all. it's the fast track to not getting promoted. and it's the reason why the biggest bumbling idiots always seem to become the boss. (get those guys outta the code anyway... "every time he uses svn, the trunk doesn't build! FUYCK!")

msp, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 04:32 (sixteen years ago) link

I had a friend who did this on aim. She'd write really long messages then sign them. She was cute so I let it slide. It was cute.

bnw, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 04:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Developers and coders and etc (lol) don't talk in absolutes because if they did, the suits would ream them later if they said "well this will be done in 10 days" and it wasn't.

Trayce, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 04:38 (sixteen years ago) link

hey wait. msp, you didn't sign 2!! of yr posts. did you decide to quit somewhere upthread?
