Anyone out there have a copy of Woebot's Sa-Ra CDR they'd care to YSI?

Crocus Behemoth (modern dance), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:01 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm not sure what cdr woebot has, but back in may on this thread i posted a link to probably what he's talking about. it's the first place i heard about SaRa (and became addicted). 20 or so tracks.

www.brucewang.com/adoru/sa-ra.zip

link's still active.

jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:13 (eighteen years ago) link

It amazes me that the good Woebot would embrace something championed well over a year earlier by Straight No Chaser and Gilles Peterson.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:21 (eighteen years ago) link

And Pépé Bradock -- wait, it's a trend!

What next, Ursula Rucker?

Thanks for the link, Jaxon.

Here's Woebot on the subject of Sa Ra:

haha i just saw that pepe bradock post! i had never seen those sleeves before (curse of mp3 culture, cough cough). they're pretty hideous, though delightfully unexpected given that i kind of expected mirrored sunglasses and tanned bodies.

that kinda reminds me of the scene in alien where they're dissecting the face hugger after it's detached from ash

okay, as a present, here's dj language's art of customization mix from last year. spacek/sa-ra/jay dee/stones throw/random soul bits/a little broken towards the end/demo mix of ayers' "sunshine"/etc. i'll try to find the sleeve when i get home so i can do a tracklist since i cant find any info about this anywhere online.

oh, while this thread is open, for anyone that might care, the new Daybre (remixes etc) sux. it's really boring. there's one good beat that's RUINED by terrible vocals. luckily there's an instrumental version of that song.

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 04:44 (eighteen years ago) link

I listened to the Weather Report track, thx Jaxon. Best handclaps on a fusion record ever?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 05:46 (eighteen years ago) link

i was only kidding about really wanting to know if people listened to that track. i was mainly making fun of jess and vahid. it's a good song though, huh?

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 06:58 (eighteen years ago) link

for anyone who didn't dl the DJ Language mix above, here's GB ft. Steve Spacek "Simply So (SA-RA Vocal Remix)"
i'm still not really loving Spacek, and i have no idea who GB is, but this might be the best thing i've heard from Sa-Ra so far. i love the horns. i'd love to hear Outkast work with these guys.

seven months pass...
Vahid that radio mix was great, much belated thnx for it. After listening to the new Dilla all weekend I listened to the mix again on my ipod on the way to work and I realized I need more of this. Does anyone (you? jaxon?) have any more stuff from Deviation, or any good comps/mixes? There's a DJ who spins this kind of shit pretty regularly at clubs in chicago now and he's pretty great. I think whats so interesting about this stuff (well, in the abstract anyway) is the way its v. much an intersection of varying music fans, a blend of hip-hop, soul and dance that manages at its best to avoid the mushy pitfalls all that implies.

I remember at one point benji b says that "next week" he'll tell the listeners about some compilations and mixes that cover the same ground as he does....but i dont have a next week. :-(

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 7 September 2006 04:00 (seventeen years ago) link

i have tried to find stuff like that mix without a lot of success.

dj language is a little bit too much on the hiphop/rnb side, most broken beat stuff is a little too generic-dancey (weak vocalists?) ...

avoid the "galactic soul" comp

i have 1 disc of a 2 disc DJ Houseshoes mix if you're interested. he's a detroit dj who plays all sorts of jay dee/slum inspired stuff. the beats are all pretty great, but the mcs are a bit too backpackery for me. lemme know and i'll try to find it and upload.

so, i'm listening to the Georgia Anne Muldrow "Odesi" album. it's really fucked up. it's like Sun Ra + Sa Ra. shit is really out, like June Tyson singing over Jay Dee beats. tons of crazy vocal overdubs. none of the melodies are sticking yet, but i still really like it. jess said the latest Spacek album was whispy like air and nothing there. this is like a harsh gust of wind. her mom sang w/pharoah sanders and i think i heard she was Dudley Perkin's (aka Declaime's) girlfriend. my friend's seen her live and says she puts on an amazing show.

The crowd was very 'be-seen' and dancing was pretty restrained. but it was still an interesting crowd and one of the dudes from the molemen (i think?) was there. I saw some of the Usual Suspects from your average Chicago hip-hop events, which was interesting; i guess they're pulled in by aloe blacc? I donno.

Is the Aloe Blacc record good?

and what (ooo), Monday, 2 October 2006 15:47 (seventeen years ago) link

aloe blacc record not as good as i hoped, but not bad if you don't mind lots of "i'm a guy who grew up on hip-hop tryin to play latin now" tracks. it might be a grower.

Does anyone know if Sa-Ra's Black Fuzz is ever actually coming out? Last time I checked, amazon had relisted the release date as December 31, 2025, which means "we have no clue whatsoever." I finally tracked down the track ("Big Fame") Pitchfork panned in their track review section, and while it's definitely a step below "Double Dutch" or the "Hangin' by a String" cover, it's nowhere near as bad as they made it out to be...

Telephonething (Telephonething), Monday, 2 October 2006 16:49 (seventeen years ago) link

i thought it was "Set Ups And Justifications", I got an album sampler for it from work the other day, so I'm assuming it will be released soon (??)

"i'm a guy who grew up on hip-hop tryin to play latin now"

this is pretty much sa-ra/andre3000/dudley perkins/many others in a nutshell, just replace latin with soul/funk/etc.
