I would really like to hear the nouvelle Mariah, I love the single and the title.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 2 June 2005 11:05 (eighteen years ago) link

seriously, its SO brilliant. the best R&B album of the year in my opinion. shes really outdone herself. the bridge on the single its like that is sublime. you have to hear we belong together and circles.

ppp, Thursday, 2 June 2005 11:11 (eighteen years ago) link

I think the new Mariah is great but so is teedra! Hardly *Just* about the voice for me. "Backstroke" is my favorite track.

deej., Thursday, 2 June 2005 12:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Teedra is lovely, and very very small.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh shit, did you ask her if she'll marry me?

BARMS, Friday, 3 June 2005 13:18 (eighteen years ago) link

she is very pretty. she looks lovely.

ppp, Friday, 3 June 2005 13:21 (eighteen years ago) link

PPP, listen to the section from "You Better Tell Her" through to "Last Day" again. I find the charge of weak songs quite surprising, esp. as if anything I'd probably consider "Be Your Girl" to be one of the weaker tracks on that score (relatively - this was my equal fave album from last year so all such distinctions are pretty pedantic).

Lex is OTM about the title track (occupies the same place in my heart), but yeah, I adore "Outta My Head" as well, and I like the way that on that portion of the album every song sounds like a massive switch-up after the previous one.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:30 (eighteen years ago) link

I didn't I'm afraid Barima. We talked about the impossibility of finding decent jewellery in Camden (she was confused about this before I informed her that Camden is the hellhole of London), the last fight she got in, and she gave me a sneak preview of this song she's writing called 'The Whole World Is A Ghetto'. She's really sweet and very thoughtful, and she wore these amazing red-tinted shades throughout.

I kind of need better dictaphone skills, though.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:33 (eighteen years ago) link

I got 25mins in the end which was excellent!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:34 (eighteen years ago) link

i'll look fwd to reading this and, yeah, the mariah album is fabulous, too.

stelf)xxx, Friday, 3 June 2005 13:46 (eighteen years ago) link

i like it less than teedra, tho.

stelf)xxx, Friday, 3 June 2005 13:46 (eighteen years ago) link

unbelievably given her lyrics she said she "doesn't intend to be poetical", and is amazed/flattered that people keep telling her that she is...

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:47 (eighteen years ago) link

hey lex, where can i read the interview?

stelfox, there is not one bad song on mariahs album. id say its 90% perfect. this album is just magnificent. circles is just WOW. those backing vocals. OMg.

ppp, Friday, 3 June 2005 13:59 (eighteen years ago) link

you will probably have to wait a couple of months to read the interview in the next Plan B, but I will bump this thread when it appears. I haven't even started transcribing yet.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 3 June 2005 14:09 (eighteen years ago) link

look forward to reading it... will keep a look out.

New issue of Plan B out today, my Teedra piece is in it. It's very abridged though that is mostly my fault for going so much over the word limit in the first place.

"Complex Simplicity" continues to impress me. I've been fawning over "No More Tears" lately and just realized it samples Outkast's "SpottieOttieDopaliscious". I've heard this horn line quite a bit lately, does anyone know it's origin or is it an Outkast original?

"Cut Buddy"!

This shit is great, it reminds me of "Oops Oh My" (although not quite as good as that). Is it from a new album or what?

New Teedra album in the 07! A Young Lioness!

Teedra has "Take My Love Away" playing on her myspace page, it sounds ace, very sad and gentle and reflective, gorgeously produced as per.

Teedra's voice is just...I can't think of another singer whose voice cuts into me as much as hers.

Nice to find out that her favourite song is Starpoint's "Object Of My Desire"! And that she started out writing songs over the top of Prince grooves, which makes a lot of sense obv.

something i didnt know wot i only learned today: according to wiki ne-yo "...helped with the musical arrangement on the Teedra Moses debut Complex Simplicity."

cool huh

(erm ok i wz actually trying to verify whether ne-yo is about to publicly come out in some magazine next month??! this in the same week he wz caught photo'd doing, uhhh... not v gay activities with a backing dancer. gotta be a hoax rite)

oh i do remember hearing back when young lioness wz scheduled for this summer that the first single was gonna feature trey songz, and the news of it naffed me off a little, cos trey songz is a bit of a knob.

here's a page of some more new odds n sods. i've linked to this site b4, the audio section is a goldmine of teedra rejectamenta! you can find the original trina song wot had teedra on it before kelly rowland, for example, or this sort of ok rmx of 'you'll never find' with the obv sample, the provenance of which still baffles me because i only learnt of it when i saw thee 12 itself in poxy electrotwat music record shop phonica, of all places. (it were never in regular rnb shops.)

New song "Love's Gonna Be" here.

A bit disappointing, actually.

one year passes...

so i went back and forth for a bit on 'so kool', wondering if this was really what i wanted from teedra, then i realised i couldn't actually stop listening to it. she sounds more subdued than in the past but it fits the song perfectly. it's so lush and pastoral - very 'rock the boat' - and the chorus is just beautiful, "don't you call me today" totally gets me.

lex pretend, Monday, 24 November 2008 12:27 (fifteen years ago) link

let's hope this means a new album is actually imminent this time!!

lex pretend, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 11:40 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm waiting to find "So Kool" before I post. Also I'm scared of getting excited and jinxing the whole thing.

it's on the fader!

lex pretend, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 11:58 (fifteen years ago) link

there was a lovely lil track called Blow Me Out that she briefly put up on her myspace some time ago.

i still haven't heard "Complex Simplicity" in its entirety! i even bought it few years ago but i kinda lost the habit of playing audio cds and i always keep forgetting to put it on :( :( :(

Mind Taker, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 12:08 (fifteen years ago) link

Sweet! Thanks for the heads up. Saw her play a short but sweet set at the Black Cat almost 2 years ago. Hope she plays some new stuff this time. Lionhearted is easily among my favorites of the year so far.

lou, Monday, 30 March 2009 21:31 (fifteen years ago) link

I saw her at the Cat but alas won't be able to make it this time.

I guess I could talk about new Teedra joints on the Rolling R&B thread, but if Teedra visited me in my dreams tonight and I had to admit I'd been intermingling her new material with just any R&B i'd be really ashamed.

Anyway, LOVE this slowburning stalker of a kiss-off jam:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_HPsA0WzRs

I also didn't even know she'd released a new mixtape this year. When oh when will Young Lioness drop? It's gettin' so the "Young" is becoming tenuous.

Tim F, Sunday, 20 September 2009 12:00 (fourteen years ago) link

brainwasher and i both mentioned the mixtape on rolling r&b in like january you funky-addled clod!!

'to hell with it' is a good song (most likely better on paper than 'everybody rock') but part of me is hesitant to greenlight her boldest yet recorded foray into darkest jazmine sullivania - i've always loved her easy, big sisterly relationship with modernity you see. also she loves rolling r&b and is honoured every time she's mentioned there.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 21:58 (fourteen years ago) link

The problem with rolling threads is that I feel like I have to watch every embedded youtube and not participate otherwise - and then there's never time to do so.

This problem doesn't arise when you're on the Executive Board (e.g. funky house sceptics) but as a simple non-executive member it often feels easier just to skip the meetings so no-one realises you've been shirking your duties.

LOL "Sullivania". I like her soulful stuff as well but I do occasionally get the impression sometimes with that kinda mixtape cut that she kinda just sleepwalked through the songwriting process (singing always spot on obv) because she finds that kind of thing so easy now. On one level this is compelling because it's like Essence Of Teedra, but on another level it ends up standing in the shadow of her first album (having a hard-to-top debut not necessarily being a "problem" of course).

While I'd be concerned if she decided just abandon that and do all electrosheen all the time ("Everybody Rock", "So Kool" etc.) I get the sense that she thinks through her woodland forays a little bit more than her open house tours.

Um...I somehow never heard this until very recently? And it might be a more perfect rainy-day-album than Mariah's latest one. Definitely amazing.

posted from the SR thread - i thought it would be better to post it here rather than derail that one even more:

"Titchy saying that Teedra's only good song is "Be Your Girl" is one of the wrongest things you've said!! It's not even top 5 on her album!"

are you serious? lol. i suppose ill have to dig it out again just to check but i dont remember anything better on there. though the b-more club mix of BYG is even better than the original and thats the one i listen to most.

yeah im not seeing how any of those are better. theyre all very samey, not really that well defined as songs, and not really that special enough groove-wise or melodically to compensate. teedras got a lovely voice and could be a great singer but be your girl is her only great song. the rest is pretty ho-hum filler. most of that first album still sounds like b-list 90s R&B. the type of thing id have expected from tara thomas, kim swain or someone, though both of those artists' better known songs are still better than the top 5 listed above.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 11:39 (fourteen years ago) link
