Its rumoured that one of them, Big Tom & The Mainliners, would get a punk audience when playing in the US as people thought the name was a smack reference even though they paly country. Though I don't believe that.

xxxxp from Simon Napier-Bell's book 'You Don't Have To Say You Love Me':
The lead singer had protruding teeth and a high warbly voice. He was generally known around the music business as the singing goat and one TV producer went to enormous lengths to send the whole thing up. Under instructions from Robert (Stigwood, the group's manager) to produce a beautiful artistic image of the group, the director placed his cameras on the singer in close-up profile, then he shot the rest of the group in miniature, in a pool of light in the distance. They were framed by the singer's open mouth, with the goaty teeth protruding over the small background figure like an awning over the tables of a French street cafe.

are there any indie bands who've forgone the oblig staging of (completely unremarkable singer) foremost, other members aligned due to some coefficient of instrument played/stature/idiosyncracy?
― nakhchivan, Friday, 27 August 2010 01:08 (2 years ago) Permalink
I thought it had long been standard to deemphasize the charismatic singer/frontman in the photo as a kind of fuck you to celebrity. Maybe that was more true in my college days though.

I realise that with some of them, the writer is laughing at a different thing/in a different way to what the intention of the artist was, but with others it is pretty clear that the band are meant to be mocking themselves in exactly the same manner that the writer is laughing.
