there can't be many more canon-y bands that r so underrepresented out there in dvd world.

but this idea of not being able to buy the dvds that come with box sets (see also talking heads boxx/dvd) *outside* of the box sets is starting to annoy me, and i fear it will only get worse.

I remember thinking when "Nirvana" came out that "You Know You're Right" should have been released and a tangible stand-alone single...but I guess if they'd done that, no-one would have bought "Nirvana."

i definitely understand that sentiment (all that "St. Kurt" bullshit is irritating even to me). but this box set's been in the making for a while (and was delayed by legal battles) so those of us who are fans have a little bit to be excited about.

The 5-8 songs I'm referring to are along the lines of "Dough Ray and Me," the ones that only C.Love and a select few have heard. For the record, there are plenty of Outcesticide tracks that have never been issued as an official album track or b-side, and the quality of recording for most of these is not especially great. The ones who are likely to buy this box would have heard of the majority of these songs by now, but this collection will gives the opportunity to finally hear songs like "Opinion" or "Old Age" with the same quality as their most popular songs.

I didn't realize that Anthony Kiedis and Andy Kaufman were the other two guys in Nirvana.

I'm only aware of the bedroom demo. It was probably written too soon before their feb 94 shows for any other demos let alone a full band version.

I'd quite like a disc of songs not on any of the four studio albums, not particularly interested in alternate takes or demos or what have you. Does such a thing exist?

Not really, all of the b-side and non-album tracks are piled in with the alternate takes and demos on the With the Lights Out box, they've never really had a single disc non-album comp. Some of the Outcesticide bootlegs might get you closer, but a lot of those are live tracks, not necessarily b-side stuff.

My fault for not having having stringent definitions; in my head Incesticide is a studio album because it's a collection of songs that were recorded in a studio.

Years after having dismissed grunge I happened upon a very cheap copy of Nirvana's "Nevermind" in a used CD shop and it's far from as spectacular as I used to think it was. In fact, I could barely finish side 2.

Hah I was really punk rock at that time so I probably thought it was too corporate.

It kinda still is production wise but it stands out more now, it has a more unique sound without all those. Around that time it seemed like that production style was all over the kind of bad rock radio you would hear in a Footlocker or sports store. The songs are still killer though, the lyrics in "Underneath the Bridge" are a huge highlight for me now. Yeah excuse the younger me I was probably trying hard to seem cool.

watched the documentary last night. there's a part in the middle that's just 15 minutes of kurt/courtney home video clips. it's like watching gummo or something... kind of entertaining.

i'd give it a 7/10 BNM

For me they seemed boring between 1996-1998, but outside of that duration they sounded pretty neat.
