Some good'uns: Akira, Ninja Scroll, Fist Of The North Star, Ghost In The Shell (if you're a patient person).

Ghost in the Shell manga = 100 * Ghost in the Shell movie, which was a pretty good movie anyway. Cowboy Bebop is my current obsession though.

metropolis review. ahem, well you seee. err. ok i did see it, but i kept snoozing off. I WAS/AM TIRED = it was a good w/e :-)

neva-thu-less, my friend says from how i recounted it, that tho i missed some early key scenes, that i did get the whole story. this is because the whole story is somewhat lacking in originality. On the cool looking animation -- yes it is top stuff. there's a lot of computer animation for the large machinery, lending it that "riven" feel in places, and there are some lovely backdrops. eye candy all over the place basically. and you get all the usual spectacle, massive amounts of destruction -- things fall apart... mere anime is loosed upon the world (heh).

A final impression: the whole thing looks more european than japanese. i was reminded of tintin a lot, not just in the idiosyncratic appearances of the characters (an enormous nose on this guy, bizarre flaring legs on that guy, a whacky moustache), but also in the cartoonish manner of their drawing constrasting with the lusher background.

I have to get back to work now.

Oh My Goddess! is clearly the best (and perhaps most twee) anime ever. Well, maybe not, but I like it and it has some great songs.

Paul Strange, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (11 years ago) Permalink

This lunchtime I popped to HMV and DROOLED over the amount of anime videos they had! So much Oh My Goddess! And Bubblegum Crisis! Has anyone actually *seen* Sailor Moon, cos I don't know what it's like at all or where to start. I so want to see Totoro and Kikis Delivery although I didn't see them on video. I need a DVD playa so much. And AHEM, if anyone wants to pop to my WISHLIST they will find a nice multi-region BARGIN for 149quid hemhem.

And I dunno, Belldandy being into motorbikes and bike fixing isn't exactly the same as knitting Keichi mittens. Fine tune the engine with love...

on a less hardkore kick, i'd love to have Ulysses 31 on tape. far too exp tho. why o why o why is this show not repeated on my expensive cable feed.

that is to say *ahem* you can get all kinds of info about Ulysses 31 *and* download the rather groovy theme tune at the TV cream website!

katie, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (11 years ago) Permalink

Ulysses was on the sci-fi channel for a bit iirc, before they started showing battle of the planets. Have you tried some of the kiddie channels Alan? They seem to show a lot of Japanese stuff.

chris, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (11 years ago) Permalink

I believe this may be the same Ulysesses theme tune I was played when very very very tired and perhaps a little emotional. I thought it would have been the best thing evah, if I hadn't wanted to DIE from tiredness. I think I must hear it again when I function slightly bettah.

'Lain: Serial Experiment' = total work of genius. Sort of Michael Mann doing a version of Neuromancer featuring a sad little Japanese girl including one episode where they recap everything in 10 minutes before the final two episodes kick off, scored with endless ace psychedelic guitar wankery. The rest of the soundtrack is great too, all cool ambient noises, etc.

I like Daddy Warbucks best.

Sarah: I've seen all of Sailor Moon. The first season is pretty slow, but necessary for character introductions. You could get by only watching the plotty episodes, but it would annoying to find out just which episodes those are. But if you can make it through the slow first season and the crappy first half of the second season, everything past that is awesome.

Vinnie, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (11 years ago) Permalink

As for what it's like, um, cute girls who fight evil monsters. Silly, but also very serious and plotty at times.

can anyone recommend some anime tv series and movies? the library at my school recently opened up their audio visual collection for browsing and it turns out they have an enormous collection, like a full wall probably 500 dvds? of anime, from what i could tell including chinese, japanese, and what looked like korean(?) anyways i don't know anything aside from a few bigger titles, all violent stuff a cousin of mine is into, took out a Berserk box set, but i really want to explore this collection

Series:

Kino's Journey
Haibaine Renmei
Paranoia Agent
Azumanga Daioh
Mushi-shi (haven't watched much yet but looks interesting)
The first season of Haruhi Suzumiya was good fun.

I guess I have a preference for "thought-provoking" anime.

Films:

Perfect Blue
Millennium Actress
Tokyo Godfathers
Paprika

Spirited Away
My Neighbour Totoro
Porco Rosso
Nauisicaa
Only Yesterday
Grave of the Fireflies

Metropolis
Ghost in the Shell
Urusei Yatsura 2 - Beautiful Dreamer
Memories

Night on the Galactic Railroad (that may be hard to get hold of)

Also, I'm insanely jealous you have access to such a library!
