I applaud you for being able to date that pic based on Danny's haircut

The only other way to get accurate dates is to take a core sample. Or, more drastically, chop him down and count the rings.

can't believe that a famous American pop musician who played the Grand Ole Opry and was frequently on television for four decades was once photographed with a married couple of country musicians who also played the Grand Ole Opry and were frequently on television for the same four decades, and (searches "Audrey Winters") the wife of country musician Don Winters, whose only internet-notable work was appearing in country music film From Nashville With Music, happened to be in the same place as that married couple who also appeared with her in From Nashville With Music

I guess you didn't get Dark Shadows over there.

Jonathan Frid in character as Barnabas Collins of the supernatural soap opera Dark Shadows.

You might be surprised at how few US TV shows were actually shown in the UK in 60s/70s/80s, or even more recently than that, including some very famous ones, so it's recommended that US TV actors, comedians, personalities are always named. Plus there was regional television in the UK, so stuff that got shown in one region often wasn't shown in another.

Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Monday, 24 May 2021 19:31 (two years ago) link

"Dark Shadows" also a show that I've heard of, that I'm aware of, but one that I've never seen. (I'm American, btw.)

My step-dad used to tell jokes like "What kind of car does Barnabas drive? (A bloodmobile)" and I wouldn't have a clue what he was talking about.

I reverse-image searched it to learn who was on the right. I thought it was Mr. Bentley from The Jeffersons at first!

pplains, Monday, 24 May 2021 19:42 (two years ago) link

Dark Shadows was shown in the UK in the 90s, and the 1970s film spin-offs (which wrote characters out of the show for months so they could shoot) were released.

This only underscores that nobody can be expected to know every pop culture figure from every country in the world, though. Ask not for whom the Tuomas tolls - today, it tolls as thee.

I have heard of Barnabas Collins but only because of the amazing Lone Ranger tune.

OK, I fall into the "name them!" camp but figured these two were so obvious that I didn't need to. Forgot about the British contingent, but I really thought even if one hadn't seen the DS series, images of Frid as Barnabas are so prevalent they have become part of the culture (likewise w/Bozo). I was early teens during the height of DS popularity and the characters were regularly featured in "teen" magazines, alongside the Partridge Family, etc.

XP I had thought it belly-flopped harder, but the wiki detail about it competing in theatres against the first Avengers feature is a good reminder of the legs that film had as Marvel was still expanding their audience.

[q]The film grossed $79.7 million in the United States and Canada, and $165.8 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $245.5 million.

For a Burton film, Dark Shadows achieved below-average domestic box office takings, with many commentators attributing that to the domination of The Avengers. It made $29.7 million in its first weekend, then $12.8 million in its second.[/img]

it’s not even their only claim to fame on English Wikipedia. ILMors take note - this is from the entry on Gabber (the hardcore techno genre):

“[Gabber’s] popularity also led to parody tracks such as Gabber Piet's "Hakke & Zage" which drew on the theme tune of the Peppi & Kokki children's television show.”

Really, if you think about it, the whole thread is kind of faulty, because all famous people hang out with other famous people, so there is no reason to ever expect one famous person not to be photographed with another famous people, let alone someone in the same field or professional circle. All the same, I love this photo:
