Is the guy on the left a pre-Thorson lookalike/companion?

I recognize ... Liberace.

Xpost Not sure, but wondering if that’s Bill Cotton, head of BBC light entertainment at the time, third from the left.

Morecambe is the balding dude with glasses, pp. super-famous half of a TV comedy double act. Here’s the first of their eleven Ed Sullivan appearances, halfway into a 42-year career.

Not famous in America therefore not famous on ILX.

Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Thursday, 22 April 2021 22:50 (three years ago) link

The Ed Sullivan Show official youtube channel was still posting them (now in color) as recently as September. (The comments are mostly spittle-flecked rage at the American audience for merely laughing, not audibly urinating uncontrollably.)

They weren't all that good till Eddie Braben started writing for them tbh.

The fellow on the right is called Porter Wagoner, and was part of a singing duo with Dolly Parton - the picture was taken the last time they sang together, at the third annual Grand Masters Fiddling Contest on June 16, 1974, which the McCartneys were present at.

Which is all very neat, but maybe a bit short of 'would never have expected to be together'

It's a picture of Paul McCartney and Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner. Just picture it.

I mean, all of these pictures have clearly been taken at places or events where the participants were "present" at, right? Anyway, I would definitely expect Porter Wagoner to be with Dolly Parton, but I would not have expected either of them in a picture with Paul McCartney.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 24 April 2021 00:05 (three years ago) link

I wouldn't be so sure that people know what Porter Wagoner looks like tbh. And what is Linda, chopped liver?!!?

based on the shade of Danny’s sunglasses this pic could only have been taken on April 14 or 15, 2011

The only other way to get accurate dates is to take a core sample. Or, more drastically, chop him down and count the rings.

Hopefully the new Cocaine & Rhinestones season gets to the bottom of what happened to George's lost Little Richard tribute album.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 21 May 2021 06:02 (two years ago) link

can't believe that a famous American pop musician who played the Grand Ole Opry and was frequently on television for four decades was once photographed with a married couple of country musicians who also played the Grand Ole Opry and were frequently on television for the same four decades, and (searches "Audrey Winters") the wife of country musician Don Winters, whose only internet-notable work was appearing in country music film From Nashville With Music, happened to be in the same place as that married couple who also appeared with her in From Nashville With Music

(Josh's photo didn't show for me, so I assumed pp was posting it properly until the annotation)

I guess you didn't get Dark Shadows over there.

Jonathan Frid in character as Barnabas Collins of the supernatural soap opera Dark Shadows.

You might be surprised at how few US TV shows were actually shown in the UK in 60s/70s/80s, or even more recently than that, including some very famous ones, so it's recommended that US TV actors, comedians, personalities are always named. Plus there was regional television in the UK, so stuff that got shown in one region often wasn't shown in another.

Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Monday, 24 May 2021 19:31 (two years ago) link

"Dark Shadows" also a show that I've heard of, that I'm aware of, but one that I've never seen. (I'm American, btw.)

My step-dad used to tell jokes like "What kind of car does Barnabas drive? (A bloodmobile)" and I wouldn't have a clue what he was talking about.

I reverse-image searched it to learn who was on the right. I thought it was Mr. Bentley from The Jeffersons at first!

pplains, Monday, 24 May 2021 19:42 (two years ago) link

Dark Shadows was shown in the UK in the 90s, and the 1970s film spin-offs (which wrote characters out of the show for months so they could shoot) were released.

This only underscores that nobody can be expected to know every pop culture figure from every country in the world, though. Ask not for whom the Tuomas tolls - today, it tolls as thee.

bobo honkin' slobo babe (sic), Monday, 24 May 2021 19:48 (two years ago) link

I have heard of Barnabas Collins but only because of the amazing Lone Ranger tune.
