I assume they broke the record for most metric tons of drugs consumed in a single tennis tournament.

Harry Nilsson pulled a muscle so couldn't make it?

Duncan Disorderly (Tom D.), Sunday, 11 April 2021 23:08 (three years ago) link

it's Alice we always want to see, but quietly this thread has also made me aware of what a ubiquitous California schmoozer Mickey Dolenz was in the 70s.

He certainly was. He and Moon are on the inner sleeve of one of those boozy mid-70s Nilsson albums, Alice probably is as well.

peace, man, Sunday, 11 April 2021 23:33 (three years ago) link

XP Talking about Dolenz & Moon. Flo & Eddie were probably auxiliary members (Kaylan appears in other shots from where that one w/Murray was taken).

blue whales on ambient (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 11 April 2021 23:40 (three years ago) link

Ringo was around a lot too. Mickey Dolenz must have been secretly pouring those Brandy Alexanders into plant pots because he seems to be the only one not to emerge from that scene a complete physical and mental wreck.

Duncan Disorderly (Tom D.), Sunday, 11 April 2021 23:41 (three years ago) link

Ha, both Flo & Eddie were cropped out of the pic I posted: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/9d/b5/f1/9db5f1e11dd7f0b0cf0986f580caae3b.png

The Nilsson bio implied that Dolenz was no slouch on that front.

Flo & Eddie = Turtles/Zappa/Incredivoices singers Howard Kaylan & Mark Volman

(For the Tuomas's out there)

Flo and Eddie bringing their typical ominous solemnity to that picture, they had to be suppressed.

Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 11 April 2021 23:48 (three years ago) link

That's Volman on the right in the first two pictures.

so hard to square the evil terribleness of Flo & Eddie's zappa contributions to the fact that they're on Hungry Heart and Love My Way and all those T Rex singles

Xpost Not sure, but wondering if that’s Bill Cotton, head of BBC light entertainment at the time, third from the left.

Morecambe is the balding dude with glasses, pp. super-famous half of a TV comedy double act. Here’s the first of their eleven Ed Sullivan appearances, halfway into a 42-year career.

Not famous in America therefore not famous on ILX.

Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Thursday, 22 April 2021 22:50 (three years ago) link

The Ed Sullivan Show official youtube channel was still posting them (now in color) as recently as September. (The comments are mostly spittle-flecked rage at the American audience for merely laughing, not audibly urinating uncontrollably.)

They weren't all that good till Eddie Braben started writing for them tbh.

Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Thursday, 22 April 2021 23:09 (three years ago) link

The fellow on the right is called Porter Wagoner, and was part of a singing duo with Dolly Parton - the picture was taken the last time they sang together, at the third annual Grand Masters Fiddling Contest on June 16, 1974, which the McCartneys were present at.

Which is all very neat, but maybe a bit short of 'would never have expected to be together'

bobo honkin' slobo babe (sic), Saturday, 24 April 2021 00:04 (three years ago) link

It's a picture of Paul McCartney and Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner. Just picture it.

I mean, all of these pictures have clearly been taken at places or events where the participants were "present" at, right? Anyway, I would definitely expect Porter Wagoner to be with Dolly Parton, but I would not have expected either of them in a picture with Paul McCartney.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 24 April 2021 00:05 (three years ago) link

I wouldn't be so sure that people know what Porter Wagoner looks like tbh. And what is Linda, chopped liver?!!?
