heard on MTV last week that it's 'hollaback girl'.
an insane move considering 'cool' exists.
why, incidentally don't they let lu cont do a remix of the whole album?

piscesboy, Thursday, 24 March 2005 14:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Hollerback Girl is easily the third or fourth best song on the record. Cool is ok but it sounds like No Doubt, which I think she's trying to play down, considereing Rich Girl was also a single and it's no good.

dan. (dan.), Thursday, 24 March 2005 18:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Girls fucking LOVE hollaback girl. My friend's girlfriend made me play it at a house party. She did an i-told-you-so. She was right. mmmhmm, thats my shit.

'Rich Girl' is great, it nags and nags and that's good. Too much hatin' on it. Next best track (after the Lu Cont mix of 'What you waiting for') is so obviously 'Real Thing', New Order should quit dragging out new increasingly-boring albums and work with pop acts instead.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 24 March 2005 22:59 (nineteen years ago) link

I HEART the part of Rich Girl that goes "alllll the riches baby..." and then its that stupid melody lift.

deej., Thursday, 24 March 2005 23:05 (nineteen years ago) link

The only rubbish thing about it is the ugly sea-shanty video. Big disappointment after the lovely & slick mess of 'what you waiting for'. I thought 'Real thing' was a guaranteed single choice, am I on my own here?

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 24 March 2005 23:24 (nineteen years ago) link

yep. it's just you.

piscesboy, Thursday, 24 March 2005 23:34 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't understand what I'm supposed to dislike about "Rich Girl". Even Eve's totally token intro rap thrills me, but maybe that's just because she looks so awesome striding down the boat in the video clip.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 24 March 2005 23:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Me and a gazillion 14yr old girls and young-professionals-in-luv and all the rest of the chart-buying public, I'll wager. Sorry to go on about it but 'Real Thing' should be the UK's last #1 before they dissolve the top40 as we know it. The video to it will be all white & gold and probably set in heaven and Gwen will cry mercury tears. (x-post)

Yeah, Eve's token rap is grreat.

Is this NME Gwen interview worth reading? Who's the writer? (fingers crossed it's Peter Robinson)

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 25 March 2005 00:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Tim for me its just an annoying melody to lift, I don't hate any other part of it really, but the lyrics "if i was a rich girl, nanananana ... I'd have all the money in the world" what? It comes across to me as lazy and if it was an interesting/ not horribly overused melody i wouldn't mind, but if i want fiddler on the roof i'll listen to 'sound murderer' thank you very much. :)

She did the marching band one on Letterman the other night. Not bad at all. When Dave talked to her back by his desk she came off as one of the many high school crushes I had way too sophisticated ever to be in earnest about anything, with the exception of Gavin, her husband, who she loves, she married, she said, "because he's so HOT!" She made Dave a little sweaty too. He told her three times she has great legs, this scattered between questions about who's a better artist, her or Gavin, and things of that nature. After she left, before the show ended, he said, "Just to be clear, so there's no doubt about this, she has great legs," or something less cheesy. Hot diggity damn.

The Nudisco mix of "Crash" is pretty great, I haven't heard the original.

Revive!

Simply to call out pitchfork on their snide and typical corny indie attitude:

Gwen Stefani Discusses Future Projects

Jessica Suarez reports:
Gwen Stefani may still be enjoying the enormous and puzzling success of her solo album, Love Angel Music Baby, but she's not ready to take a break yet...

But enough about the music, lets talk about LAMB, Stefani's clothing label. Stefani's fetishization of Japanese culture seems to have reached its logical, borderline-racist end, as Hewlett-Packard announced last week that they would sell 3,000 limited edition cameras as part of LAMB's "Harajuku Lovers" fashion line. The 4.1-megapixel camera features hearts, Japanese Kanji characters and a bunch of other stuff crucial to taking good pictures. "Everyone has a camera as an accessory. I thought it might be cute to have a camera that will go with your outfit. It will match the underwear I'm making," Stefani said of the camera, or of Gavin Rossdale.

Just disgusting.

Pitchfork is so "superior".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 20:42 (eighteen years ago) link

"Puzzling success"? Why? People like the songs a lot. People go nuts for "Hollaback Girl" on dancefloors. What the f*ck is so puzzling?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 20:43 (eighteen years ago) link

it's weird thing to say, but hardly a "disgusting" sentiment imo.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 20:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, she definitely appeared out of nowhere with her harem of Asians. If she did that with black girls, this thread would have 4,000 posts by now.

Anyhow, Pitchfork should really talk about her ska roots more. It's rare to see them pass up such a gaping wound.

'borderline racist use of the ska idiom brrrrrap'

> "rich girl" interpolates the fiddler on the roof song in pretty much exactly the same way as lady saw's (at least a year old?) "if i was a rich girl"

Lady Saw did a version of "Rich Girl"? I always assumed Gwen's version was taken from the '99/2000 rai version of the song by Tara

H (Heruy), Thursday, 26 May 2005 07:39 (eighteen years ago) link

There've been HEAPS of renditions of "Rich Girl" lately. My favourite is the B-Boys' "Shake Da Body/Rich Girl" which Tom bigged up on NYLPM a while back.

wait, which track does jacques do a remix of?

i dont like the diplo remix of hollaback girl much, though i like the non-remixed version plenty.

i dont think ive heard any of the other tracks

i live under a rock, i know

As long as that rock is not Paul Simon.

"Gwen Stefani may still be enjoying the enormous and puzzling success of her solo album"

has it been uch a success??? only HollabackGirl has been a big hit, no?

"wait, which track does jacques do a remix of?"

HG, I think.

nathalie's baby (stevie nixed), Thursday, 26 May 2005 08:16 (eighteen years ago) link

No, he remixed what I prefer to refer to as "the first, uber-annoying one."
"has it been uch a success??? only HollabackGirl has been a big hit, no?"

No. "Rich Girl" hit number one too, and the album has been comfortably esconced in the top ten for months.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 26 May 2005 11:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh god i sooooo want one of those cameras. des-per-ate-ly.
aces.

"wait, which track does jacques do a remix of?"

"What You Waiting For"

No. "Rich Girl" hit number one too, and the album has been comfortably esconced in the top ten for months.

"Rich Girl" peaked at #7, actually.

in the overall creepy context of the harajuku girls thing, the camera manufacture is pretty minor.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:57 (eighteen years ago) link

oh right, gwen stefani is the one with the creepy context here...

Gwen Stefani or Jessica Suarez?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 May 2005 21:50 (eighteen years ago) link

I like Hollaback Girl, but Gwen's voice isn't really the best for it...I keep imagining how awesome it would be as a Kelis song instead.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 26 May 2005 21:52 (eighteen years ago) link

haha seriously?!

deej., Thursday, 26 May 2005 23:40 (eighteen years ago) link

It's fine with me if Suarez finds Gwen's succes puzzling (I find many other people's succes puzzling) but what's so borderline racist about selling cameras?

JoB (JoB), Friday, 27 May 2005 00:04 (eighteen years ago) link

there's a joke about the stereotype of Asian tourists with cameras lurking around here somewhere.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 13:09 (seventeen years ago) link

xxxxtremely silly idea to rush back for the arse end of 2006, what can she hope to achieve? everyone's quite happy to wait. it just looks like she's desperate to head off fergie, who in fact should release 'glamorous' (which was once gwen's 'luxurious' rmx)(superhackneyed factoid, holla) the minute the gwen drops just to rub it in.

also a live version of 'wind it up' was already on the internets when l.a.m.b. was out and proud. i fear this new album will end up being offcuts and rushjobs :(
